Understanding Your Aid Package and Notification Letter

Cost of Attendance: Your estimated cost of attendance includes direct costs (expenses paid directly to the
university), and indirect costs (average expenses incurred as a result of attendance, but that are not paid to Emory).

Food and Housing Expenses: First-year students are automatically enrolled in the unlimited meal plan. The total
estimated food expense covers the charge for this plan. Students living in residence halls are billed for a specific hall.
The figure listed above represents the average charge for a double room. Actual billed charges may be different
based on the meal plan or housing option chosen.

Gift Aid: Funds offered to the student that do not have to be repaid, unless the student fails to meet certain terms,
such as a service requirement, specified as a condition of the grant. Gift aid includes funds with titles such as grants
and scholarships. Gift aid can be based upon many factors, including (but not limited to) financial need and/or talent.

Scholarship: A type of gift aid. Scholarships are typically based on merit or a combination of merit and need. To be
eligible for renewal of certain scholarships, the student may be required to maintain a specific Grade Point Average
(GPA) or enrollment status. Please reference the student financial aid website to see the guidelines for specific
scholarships.

Self Help Aid: Financial aid in the form of loans or student employment. Loans can be used to pay the remaining net
costs after gift aid is deducted. Student employment earnings (including federal work-study) are generally not
deducted from billed costs but can be used to help you cover indirect costs and are paid in the form of wages to the
student for hours worked.

Federal Direct Student Loan: Federal Direct Loans are low-interest loans available to degree-seeking students
enrolled at least half time (6 credit hours per term). The lender is the US Department of Education, authorized under
the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan program. An origination fee will be deducted from each disbursement by the
US Department of Education. Federal Direct Loans may be subsidized or unsubsidized, depending upon your
eligibility for need-based aid.
Subsidized loans require demonstration of financial need as determined by the information on the FAFSA. You do not
pay interest on the loan if you continue to be enrolled at least half time. Once you graduate or withdraw, payments
and interest begin to accrue after a six-month grace period. Students must complete Entrance Counseling, a Master
Promissory Note and an Annual Student Loan Acknowledgement to receive disbursements.

Estimated Balance: Actual costs will be reflected on your account with the Student Accounts and Billing Office and
will become available prior to the start of your first term of enrollment. Once available, please contact the Student
Accounts and Billing Office at 404.727.6095 (Atlanta Campus) or 770.784.8325 (Oxford Campus) with any questions
regarding your balance. More information on payment options, deadlines, and refunds may be found on their website.

Types of Aid: More information regarding the types of aid included in your financial aid package may be found on
our website.

Additional Financing Options: Students or their families may, subject to approval, utilize the Federal Direct Parent
PLUS loan or private educational loans to meet the difference between a program's estimated cost of attendance and
the total amount of aid offered. The Federal Direct Parent PLUS loan requires that the parent does not have an
adverse credit history. The terms of private loans vary and require a credit check on the borrower.

Future Communications: Please keep in mind our primary means of communicating with you will be email. Email
and mailing addresses can be reviewed and updated in OPUS under the Profile tile.
