METHODS OF TEST FOR
STABILIZED SOILS
PART I METHOD OF SAMPLING AND PREPARATION
OF STABILIZED SOILS FOR TESTING
o FOREWORD
o1 ThIS Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards
Institutlon on 20 October 1967 after the draft finahzed by the SOli
Engineering Sectional Committee had been approved by the CIvIl
Engineering DIVISion Council
o2 Soil stabihzanon 10 the broadest sense ISthe alteration of any
inherent propertyofa solito Improve Its engmeermg performance The
classlflcation ofthe methodsofstabihzatlonIS basedon the treatment
given to the soil (for example dewatering compaction etc) process
involved (forexample thermal electrical etc)andonaddinvesemployed
(forexample asphalt cement etc) The choice of a particular method
dependsonthe charactensticsofthe problem onhand Forstudyingthe
effectiveness of a stabilizationtechmque under mvestigation certain
standard methods oftest are requiredand these are bemgpublished 10
parts This part [IS 4332 (Part I) 1967] lays down the method of
samplingand preparationofstabihzedSOils fortesting
o3 In the formulation of this standard due weightage has beengiven
to international coordination among the standards and practices
prevailing 10 different countries 10 addition to relatmg It to the
practices10 this field 10 this country Thrs has been met by basingthe
standard on B S 1924 1957 Methods of test for stabihzed SOIls
pubhshedbythe BritishStandards Institution
o4 ThiSedition1 1 incorporates Amendment No 1 (August 1983) Side
bar indicatesmodiflcation ofthe text as the resultofmcorporatton ofthe
amendment
o5 In reportmgthe results of a test or analysis made 10 accordance
With tlus standard If the final value observed or calculated ISto be
roundedoff It shall be done 10 accordance With IS 2 1960*
1 SCOPE
1 1 ThIS standard (Part I) laysdownthe generalpnnciplesofsampling
for obtalrung disturbed samples and the method for preparation of
stabilizedSOlIs fortestmg

2 SAMPLING
2 1 Thepurposeforwhicha sampleISrequiredmaybeconsidered either
as beingto represent as large a bodyof material as possiblein order to
study Its average properties or as beingone of a series representinga
relativelysmall bodyof material in order to study the vanabihty ofIts
properties Theformersampleswillbereferredtoas representative and
typical of these are those samples taken m advanceof construction to
assess the suttabihty ofa givensourceofSOlI The latter sampleswillbe
referred to as selected and typicalare thosesamples taken forcontrol
tests carried out during constructionwherethe samples representonly
a small proportion ofthe wholework
2 2 Representativesamplesshould be obtained by takmg a number of
sub samples from dehrruted areas from WhICh matenal IS being
sampled and these sub samples should be thoroughly mixed The
number of sub samples should be a rrumrnum of five or more
dependingon the area The quantity of the resultmg sample shall be
reducedto that requiredfor tests If the quantity of the test sample IS
one eighth or moreofthe total sample it shall be obtainedby nfflmgor
quartering If the quantity ofthe test sample is less than one eighth of
the total sample It shall be obtained by rruxmg SIX small samples of
appropriate quantity taken fromthe total sample
2 3 Where several sub samples are taken they should normally each
be taken so as to ehnunate as far as possible any segregation that
occurred in the placmg of the matenal being sampled For example
the coarse matenal of a stock pile or lorry load will normally be
concentratedat the base and edges and apex will be deficient 10 It
Care should also be taken that the size of the samphng tool is not so
small that the coarsermatenal rollsoff
2 4 In some instances the whole of a selected sample may be taken
from one place WIthout sub sampling For samglmg a representative
sample froma quantity of material ofabout 4 m in SIze about 10sub
samplesmay be required It ISconvenient of the size Ifthe sub sample
can be chosensuch that no reductionin the sizeofthis mixedsampleIS
required Selectedsamples will often be taken from soil mixedWith a
stabilizer and 10 many such instances speed of treatment wrll be of
greater Importance than thoroughnessof mixingof the sub samples
The changes in uniformity brought about by nuxing may be
undesirable because the selected sample may become better mixed
than the matenal fromwhichIt was taken
2 5 The SIze of sample required will depend on the particle size
distnbutlon and the purposeto whichIt to be put
NOTE- The sampletaken shouldbe sufficient to provide the weightsor prepared
soilspedfledforeachtest Inthe respective standards
IS 4332(Part I) 1967
2 6 Wheresamplesare bemgtaken for the determmationof moisture
content or for testing without changeof moisturecontent the use of
shallowtrays forstoringor carryingshouldbe avoidedas these expose
the sampleunnecessarily to evaporation or rainfall Thesampleshould
be taken in air tight containers Likewise particularly at a site
laboratorywhere much of the work may be carned out m the open
suchsamplesshouldbe kept covered overIfnot sealedup exceptwhen
matenal is actuallybeingabstracted
3 PREPARATION OF SAMPLESFOR TESTING

additiveshall be mcorporated m the sod m a manner appropnate to
the processunder consideratton ( seeNoteunder 3 4 4 2 )
3 5 Initial Preparation of Previously Mixed Stabdized Soil
Mixture for Strength Tests
3 5 1 For fine gramed cohesive sods the sampleas received may have
compacted aggregations that havebeenproduced as a result ofmixing
For mixesprepared m a laboratorymixer It ISrecommended that all
the matenal shall be passed through a 20 mm IS Sieve by workmg
material greater than 10 mm through the mesh The material shall
then be thoroughly re mixed by hand before preparmg the test
specimens This procedure will result in a more umformly compacted
specimen For mixestaken fromconstruction site workthe specimens
shall be madefromall the mixedmaterialand the size ofthe specimen
used shall be determmedby the size of the aggregations of stabilized
sod produced by the rmxmg plant
3 5 2 For matenals that are stabilizedwith cement it IS essentialthat
all operations mcludmg compaction are completed within about 30
minutes after the rrnxlng IScompleted to avoidconsiderable loss m
strength whichmayoccuras a result ofthe hydrationofthe cement
