Zadanie 4.

Przeczytaj tekst, który został podzielony na trzy części (A–C) oraz pytania go dotyczące (4.1.–4.4.). Do każdego
pytania dopasuj właściwą część tekstu. Wpisz rozwiązania do tabeli. Uwaga: jedna część tekstu pasuje do dwóch
pytań.

In which paragraph does the author

i2ll
4.1. express surprise at human relationships with domestic animals?
4.2. prove that our love of animals has increased over the years?
4.3. suggest ethical concerns about pets may have some validity?
4.4. discuss how some animals now have a legal status similar to humans?
2m1 SHOULD WE KEEP PETS?
A. People, on the whole, are undoubtedly pet-lovers. In 2017, in the UK, the pet industry was worth over £6.5billion,
while in the US pet industry expenditure was forecast to reach approximately $99 billion in 2020. If that’s not

a
enough proof of how fond we are of our furry friends, a  recent survey rather shockingly revealed that 15% of
people loved their pets more than their partner and 24% loved their pet more than their best friend. Despite these
a1c
extraordinary facts, there has been concern from ethicists lately who claim that keeping a pet may in fact be an act

il2l
of cruelty to animals.
B. Fortunately, we have seen lots of progress over the years from animal protection organisations to ensure the welfare
of animals. Conditions in zoos and on farms have improved significantly, circus animals are largely a thing of the
2m1
past and testing on animals is mostly limited to experiments for medicinal purposes only. Domestic animals, too,
10

have found their rights protected with many countries guaranteeing them almost the same rights as we have when
M

it comes to protection against home violence.

C. Ethicists, however, are concerned that even owners who claim their pets are happy are in fact mistaken.
For example, most dogs and cats are locked indoors and have no freedom in deciding when to go out
or what or when to eat. The popular goldfish has a  life expectancy of 25 years, but in glass bowls at home
they tend to live less than a  few months. And so-called ‘pocket-pets’ like hamsters and gerbils are
a1c
the constant playthings of young children that dress them up and post pictures of them on social media. One does
have to wonder, therefore, that although there are well-publicised benefits of pet ownership, perhaps it wouldn’t
be such a bad thing to think about it from the other point of view once a while.

GOOD LUCK, GOOD WORK

i2ll
What would you do if you no longer needed to work for a regular income? Some people would travel for a year and
take in the Seven Wonders of the World. Some would treat loved ones to something they’ve always wanted. Still others
would decide to put their working days behind them forever and spend the rest of their time living a life of luxury.
5.1. ____. This is what Christopher Collis did when he became the lucky winner of a  lottery competition which
guaranteed him a salary for the rest of his life.
2m1
Collis had already led a somewhat interesting life before coming into his prize money. 5.2. ____. It all began back in
2005 when, at the age of 21, Collis volunteered to work in a homeless shelter which offered temporary accommodation
for people living on the streets. He spent the next few years helping out there, but eventually felt he needed to do

a
something to assist the homeless on a more long-term basis. 5.3. ____. Three years later, however, he was forced to
close this down for financial reasons. Despite this setback, Collis remained determined to help others, so he trained
a1c
to become a  social worker. He spent the next eight years working with juveniles who had got into trouble with
the police and people with mental health issues. Perhaps it was no real surprise, then, that with the money he had won

il2l
he decided to set up his own charity organisation.
Collis admits that he had thought about setting up a charity if he won the lottery – but of course, he had not expected
to win. 5.4. ____. The concept was to keep things simple. There would be no official employees, but volunteers could
2m1
participate in a number of actions to provide help and assistance for people without homes. So, despite the popular
10

saying that ‘money is the root of all evil’, there are some in the world who remind us that money can also work to bring
M

good into the world.

A.
He therefore set up a hostel which allowed residents to stay for extended periods of time on condition that they
contributed to running it in some way.

B. Or perhaps doing something a little more rewarding and charitable sounds like the best thing to do.
a1c
C. He had also had considerable experience of helping those less fortunate than himself.

D.
Current projects include feeding the homeless, proving cleaning and clothing services and teaching basic computer
skills to increase chances of finding work.
M0

E.
When he did, therefore, it took him only two weeks to decide to quit his job and commit himself
full-time to helping the homeless.

A CITY OF SHORT DISTANCES

i2ll
A compact city, or a city of short distances, is an urban design concept based on the idea of having a large number of
people living in close proximity, both to each other and the facilities they need. This involves the building of communities
where blocks of flats or houses share amenities such as gardens, shops, and sports facilities. The term ‘compact city’ has
been around since the early 1970s and was a reaction to the urban sprawl resulting from population growth. Greater
numbers of people found themselves living far away from modern day conveniences and became almost entirely
2m1
dependent on their cars. Such a pattern of urbanisation was regarded unsustainable. Thus, the concept of a city of
short distances emerged.
The benefits of the compact city were numerous. Firstly, having a high population density in one area meant that there
were more opportunities for social interaction and the forming of neighbourly ties. This, in turn, would naturally lead

a
to a greater sense of community as well as a feeling of safety on the streets. Furthermore, the compact city would
also encourage increased use of bicycles or people choosing to get somewhere on foot. Although an efficient public
a1c
transport system is very much part of the plan for those that need to travel longer distances, the compact city would

il2l
naturally result in lower fuel consumption and a reduction in pollution.
Examples of urban planning along these lines can be found in the Netherlands. Like many countries in the 1960s,
they too saw the establishment of commuter towns – large urban areas populated with people travelling to work on
a daily basis. In the 1980s, the government decided that any new developments should be self-sufficient. If you’ve ever
2m1
10

wondered why you see so many people on bikes in modern Dutch towns, it’s precisely because everything in these
intelligently designed places is within cycling distance. As a result, the population is healthier, and the air is cleaner.
M

Unfortunately, like every great idea there are those who find fault. Indeed, research has suggested that although
compact cities do reduce the use of privately owned vehicles, the reduction is relatively insignificant. What’s more,
in the States in the late 1990s, Portland, Oregon, which was developed along the lines of a  similar smart growth
programme, disappointingly saw the amount of traffic increase at a far greater rate than in cities which were simply
expanding outwards, as in the traditional approach to city development.
a1c
Currently, then, there is no one clear way to a more effective city planning. The choices seem to be either to provide
housing with a greater population density but less traffic or to accept urban sprawl with the consequent loss of open
spaces. However, there may also be some kind of compromise in which both development plans are unsatisfactorily
M0

pursued in tandem.

MY NEW HOME
When I first found out that my parents and I would be moving from a house in the country, close to rural Truro, to
a newly-built housing estate in urban Liverpool, I must admit I was a little worried as I had no previous experience of
living in a huge block of flats. Still, I was a teenager, so what could I do? With no influence on my parents’ decision,
I tried to stay positive despite the utterly miserable prospect of having to squeeze all my stuff into a tiny bedroom.
It only took a short time for me to get used to my new school and make new friends. But of all the changes, there
was one which was the least expected. It turned out that all around the estate, there were some stunning communal
gardens, modern play areas with playgrounds and some quite sophisticated outdoor gyms. Shops were all within a few
minute’s walk and almost everybody used bikes to travel further afield.
Despite it being the end of summer, the air was clean, and there was a constant buzz of activity around. Within no time
at all, I had become familiar with the people that lived in the neighbourhood, and I never went far without meeting
someone I knew and stopping for a short chat. I felt welcome in my new environment and realised for the first time
that it’s the people that make a place feel like home, not the size of the room where you curl up safely to sleep at night.
