1. Introduction
IOT or internet of things is an upcoming technology that allows us to control hardware devices
through the internet. Here we propose to use IOT in order to control home appliances, thus automating
modern homes through the internet. This system uses three loads to demonstrate as house lighting and a
fan. Even if your home doesn’t have proper wiring, though, you may be able to set up a smart system
that runs on batteries. Our user friendly interface allows a user to easily control these home appliances
through the internet.

2. Literature Review
In most wireless systems, a designer has two overriding constraints: it must operate over a
certain distance(range) and transfer a certain amount of information within a time frame. Over the years,
many Smart homes are emerging with distinct technologies. Many systems were proposed based on
Arduino and Bluetooth technology, But the commutation ranges were limited up to 50 meters only.
Considering existing technologies, zigbee is one of the most used wireless systems, which is an open
standardized system. Basically, zigbee is for designing network architecture like point to point, star and
mesh networks in a building block within minimum cost per node. To design a home automation system
zigbee isu sed mostly for Ad Hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing.

3. Problem Statement
There are many problems which people face in day to day activities. Like some people forgets to
turn off the light, fan or air conditioner whenever they leave the room. Or find it difficult to manually
turn off the motor. Many of them do not have much time to handle home things at certain time. There

4
can be energy and time management problem. Commonly, home appliances remain switched ‘ON’, due
to the laziness or due to human negligence. Many times the home users leave the room without turning
off the lights, fans, Air conditioners. Smart home automation systems can automatically ‘switch OFF’
home appliances without human intervention
Considering existing systems they all were wire based and the also depend on electricity as we are
facing electricity short fall so the system will not work properly in that kind of situation and this is the
main drawback of the system.

4. Problem Solution
This project solves the problems written above. Smart home system allows you to control all your
devices. Like you may handle your home appliances from anywhere at any time. Like you can turn
off/on lights or motor according to the level of water in a tank, with just a single click.
Our system will not depend on electricity it will work on batteries and the system will work non stop.
Primary motivations to adopt smart home technology services include efficient energy management,
better home-based healthcare services, potential financial savings and benefits, and enhanced quality of
life.

5. Advantages/Benefits of proposed system

 Smart homes allow you to have greater control of your energy use, all while automating things
like adjusting temperature, turning on and off lights, opening and closing window treatments,
and adjusting irrigation based on the weather.
 Smart homes provide insights into energy use that can help you become more energy efficient
and mindful of ecological factors.
 Smart homes can pinpoint areas where you’re using more energy than you need to, allowing you
to cut back in those areas and save money.
 Conveniently Protect Your Home and Belongings
 Improve quality of life for users

6. Scope
Scope for the home automation systems involves making homes even smarter. Homes can be
interfaced with sensors. More energy can be conserved by ensuring occupation of the house before
turning on devices and checking brightness and turning off lights if not necessary. The system can be
integrated closely with home security solutions to allow greater control and safety for home owners. It
can be extend this system to automate a large scale environment, such as offices and factories..

5
Standardization enables smart homes that can control appliances, lighting, environment, energy
management and security as well as the expandability to connect with other networks.

Modules of the project:

The Smart Home system is designed for home automation consisting of smaller modules based on
Battries, REST API (Representational State Transfer Application Program Interface) , Web gateway
and Android app as the user interface. The hardware consisted of the router, Ultrasonic sensor ,system
controller, fan controller, and lamp controller separately.

Explanation of a Module:
Module is a section of a program that performs a particular task. Programs consist of modules, each
of which contains one or more routines. The term routine is synonymous with procedure, function,
and subroutine.

Examples:
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) software - is comprised of several large modules (for
example, finance, supply chain and payroll, etc.), which may be implemented with little or no
customization.
A classic example of a module-based application is Microsoft Word, which contains
modules incorporated from Microsoft Paint that help users create drawings or figures.

 Sensors to collect internal and external home data and measure home conditions. These sensors
are connected to the home itself and to the attached-to-home devices. These sensors are not
internet of things sensors, which are attached to home appliances. The sensors’ data is collected
and continually transferred via the local network, to the smart home server.

7. Software Methodology
We are using agile methodology it enables teams to deliver value faster, with greater quality and
predictability, and greater aptitude to respond to change.
Living in the modern society, where the Internet of Things (IoT) network is constantly evolving and
Things belonging to the network are expanding new functions in a fast pace, there is inevitably a need of
having a new vision over the software project management that should keep up the pace with these
changes. The Agile approach in very useful, helping teams in overpassing or even excluding
unpredictable behavior in the project management process by using a management model based on
iterative work and heuristic feedback

13. Conclusion
The implemented system is developed using ESP32 node MCU and Wi-Fi as a mode of
transmission. The system design specifications are chosen such that it is a low cost, user-friendly, and
remote-controlled. This can be beneficial to everyone and especially for the elderly and differently-abled
people. The result shows that this system works well and achieves its objective. The system can be
modified by adding support to iPhone and Windows phone users so that more users can access the

application. The proposed system is also extended and will validate its performance for smart city
applications.
