CHAPTER IV

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

In this chapter, the results of the investigation are presented in two main

sections related to the problem of the investigation. The first part contains the

findings. This section deals with the tabulation representation of the data found.

The second part is a description of the results. It is about explaining the data. The

data was identified and analyzed with a description of the data. Based on the

theory of S.Alisjahban (1974) ), to find out the social values found in the movie

Me Before You In addition, to analyze how those values are reflected by the

characters in the movie Me Before You theory from Halliday & Hasan (1985)

4.1 Findings

The researcher obtains the in-depth data to observe social values in a movie

entitled Me before You. Further on, it contains two kinds of social values, namely

solidarity and power, which can be seen from the table 4.1. Also, it provides detail

information through tables and percentages that accommodate the data in a simple

way. In this stage, the researcher used the formula as follows:

P% = F X 100%
N

Note:

P : Percentage

F : Frequency of Occurrences of Each Types of Social Values

N : Total Number of Social Values

Table 4.1

Types of Social Values in a Movie entitled Me before You

No Types of Social Values Frequency Percentage (%)

1 Solidarity 25 75%

2 Power 15 25%

Total 40 100%

Based on the information on Table 4.1, the researcher classifies the social value in

terms of two characteristics, including solidarity and power. Specifically, there are 25

scenes of solidarity and 15 scenes of power found in the film entitled Me before You.

Moreover, most of the characters in this film are values of social solidarity where

the characters give more value to strengthen their ideas and convince the listeners

that the values obtained serve a good purpose. They often give a positive value to

the interlocutors with a specific purpose. Then, the social relevance values of the

characters change the topic in a positive direction. Therefore, the listeners find the

meaning of social power from the speaker's utterances.

4.2 Discussion

In this section, the data are analyzed descriptively based on the theory. The

discussion is divided into two: first, to find out the social values found in the

movie Me Before You S. Alisjahban (1974). Second the theory proposed by

Halliday & Hasan (1985) to analyze how those values are reflected by the

characters in the movie Me Before You. Only the representatives of data for each
section were discussed. The analysis was described as below. The data can be

divided into two types namely: solidarity and power.

4.2.1 Solidarity

Alisjahban (1974) noted that solidarity focuses on promoting personality,

society, and culture in human’s life. It attempts to explore individual’s satisfaction

and happiness with different point of view. Also, solidarity value proposes various

forms of emotions, such as friendship, love, and sympathy.

In regards to the context of solidarity value, people normally respect each

other by offering intention in numerous circumstances. Thus, the scene indicates a

social behavior of sympathy, which can be clearly seen from the Excerpt 1 below.

Excerpt 1

L : What am I here for?

DN : To cheer him up, I guess
(Me before You, 14.08)

Further on, L indicates sympathy to her friend by asking a specific question

to DN. It seems to suggest from the expression “What am I here for?” that points

to how she gives a concern to her colleague. In recent observation, sympathetic to

other people will promote how to understand their personal problems properly by

uttering positive insights or supports. From the conversation between L and DN in

the Excerpt 1, it can be concluded that DN gives a suggestion to L by saying “To

cheer him up. I guess.

In addition, Halliday & Hassan (1985) noted that sympathy relates to tenor,

mode, and field. The tenor phenomenon can be investigated from good interaction

between L and another character, while the mode concerns to the implementation
of spoken language during the communication. In this case, L came to the doctor

with the confused expression when the doctor called her.

Moreover, the scene of sympathy can be analyzed from the Excerpt 2 below.

L : Will can I do anything ?

W : My pillow’s aren’t right
L : What do I do ?
W : Put your hand under my head, On my neck and just lift gently
(Me before You, 31.59)

Based on the conversation above, it confirms that sympathy to other people

can be done by taking an action when someone needs a help. In this case, speaker

L offers a help and provides a good attention to the interlocutor W.

Another kind of solidarity value involved in a movie entitled Me before You

is about love. It is presented from Excerpt 3 below:

Excerpt 3
BC : I just want to say. We’re very proud of you. And I don’t know what we
would have done without you this past year.
L : AW, Dad.
(Me before You, 1.01.37)

Based on the conversation above, it is noticeable that the scene in the movie

entitled show Me before You an affection expression from speaker to interlocutor.

It can be observed from BC statement, which proposes his love to L. Specifically,

the speaker promotes his love by uttering his pride to a special person in his life. It

can be investigated from the utterance “We’re very proud of you and I don’t know

what we would have done without you this past year” Thus, people can apply love

language by saying positive vibes to the other people. In the same vein, Hornby
(2010) underlined that love represents a deep feeling to someone since both of

them have a strong relationship in the actual interaction. To give an illustration,

parents give suggestion to their children and they will listen those advices for self-

improvement. Notably, love expression also can be found in another scene in film

entitled Me before You. It is represented from the Excerpts 4, 5, and 6 below:

Excerpt 4
L : Awww…. I love it Mom. Thank you.. Thank you ..
J : Your welcome honey..
(Me before You, 1.02.17)

Excerpt 5
W : There’s something for you in my bag as well
J : You got Lou a present ? That’s very kind of you. Wasn’t that
kind,Bernard ?
BC : That’s very kind
(Me before You, 1.02.45)

Excerpt 6
W : It’s a secret.
L : ……I can’t tell you how much I love them. Really ! Thank you.
(Me before You, 1.03.10)

Based on the Excerpt 4, it can be concluded that expressing gratefulness to

certain person is also part of affection discourse in the interaction. In the movie of

Me before You, the speaker L states expression thank you to the interlocutor J as a

sign that she really appreciates to what another person do in her life. It is notable

that saying affection is needed to strengthen the relationship among others.

Moreover, the Excerpt 5 shows another form of love affection from movie

Me before You. The speaker conveys his love by giving something to interlocutor,
which can be a meaningful thing to the receiver. On the other hand, the Excerpt 6

confirmed the way to respond when the individuals state a love expression. The

recent study by Nasir et al (2019) indicated that love expressions are discovered in

many scenes of various films. In particular, the speaker replies by saying love you

as a sign when he/she feels for someone.

Finally, solidarity concerns to explore the friendship expression between a

speaker and interlocutor. It aims to enhance mutual friendship with diverse culture

and social backgrounds. A clear example can be seen from the Excerpt 7 below

Excerpt 7
A : Thank you so much for coming Will
W : It’s a lovely day. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
(Me before You, 1.12.58)

The Excerpt 7 indicates a true friendship between A and W, who involves in

a special relationship. Importantly, friendship expression can be showed by saying

a meaningful statement to the interlocutor. Novitasari (2015) noted that those idea

persuade us to be nice to everyone even we only meet them once. Furthermore,

friendship value can be observed from another part of the film of Me before You.

The detail scene is showed from the Excerpt 8 below

Excerpt 8
KC : Show him how good this time can be. Take him places.
Make him laugh.
(Me before You, 1.12.58)

Based on the Excerpt 8, it is underlined that friendship can be upgraded by

showing attention to the interlocutor. Discourses take him places and make him
laugh are the two examples how to strengthen the solidarity in terms of friendship

value.

4.2.2 Power

Social Interaction

Social interaction is the process of reciprocal influence exercised by

individuals over one another during social encounters. Usually it refers to face-to-

face encounters in which people are physically present with one another for a

specified duration. However, in contemporary society we can also think of social

encounters that are technologically mediated like texting, skyping, or messaging.

In regard to the data gathered from a film entitled Me before You, it can be noticed

that social interaction influences social values in human’s life. The social

interaction is known from the Excerpt 8

Excerpt 8
CT : Do you have any experience of caregiving ?
Lousia : Um, I’ve never done it, but I’m sure I could learn.
(Me before You, 07.28)

From the interaction above, it can be noted that social communication tends

to reduce loneness and stress in the individual’s behavior. In fact, it limits them to

think negative action and spread insights to other people. Kuczynski (2021) stated

that engaging in more frequent, high-quality interactions may protect against daily

depressed mood and loneliness. Another example of social interaction in the

movie entitled Me before You is presented on the Excerpt 9 below

Excerpt 9
T : Would you like the Job?
L : YES !
T : Can you start immediately?
Lousia : YES
(Me before You, 09.44)

From the Excerpt 9, it can be comprehensively understood that a number of

social interactions can be produced in the actual communication. One of the most

common forms of social interaction showed in a movie is measuring individual’s

action whether agree or not. It is indicated from the statement Would you like the

Job? and Can you start immediately?
