Elements of Research Critique

The Purpose of the study The goal of the research is to evaluate pre-service English language teachers'
intercultural sensitivity. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the cultural
sensitivity of potential English language teachers.
The research questions There were two research questions provided by the authors, 1) How do
prospective English language teachers behave to between their own and other
cultural contexts?
2) How aware of cultural differences are potential English teachers?
The theoretical The theoretical framework of this research is used clearly and appropriately and it
framework is appropriate with the title itself. The researcher gave information about
intercultural sensitivity. Then, the authors used a theory from Bennett and
developed the Developmental Model of Intercultural sensitivity (DMIS) in
1986/1993.
The research This is quantitative research. The Contributors are first-year students in the ELT
methodology department at Gazi University who are preparing to teach English as a second
language in Turkey.
The research employed the intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS) to gather its data.
The scale's alpha reliability coefficients are 0.88. The Interaction Skills Scale
(ISS) is a 24-item, 5-likert scale that measures interaction confidence, interaction
enjoyment, respect for cultural differences, and interaction attention.

The significance of The findings show that prospective English language teachers are accepting of
Finding and discussions other cultures and receptive to learning about them. But even though the
participants are ELT department freshmen, their level of intercultural sensitivity is
pretty high. The findings could be taken as a lack of bias and a readiness to
tolerate the existence of various cultures. In language schools, English language
instructors resemble cultural transmitters. The findings of recent research offer
participants pretty positive insights in this regard. Another significant finding is
that people believe their society to be superior to all other civilizations. This
finding suggests that pre-service English language instructors in Turkey have few
chances to participate in experiential learning about other cultures.
The value of the study The paper clearly demonstrates that to Intercultural sensitivity is the desire to
understand, appreciate, and appreciate the similarities and contrasts among
cultures. It is an emotive dimension of intercultural communication ability. The
current study shows that the pre-service English language instructors who took
part in the experiment are interculturally aware individuals and have the skills
needed to teach and use English in cross-cultural situations.
Writing style and All of the structure in this research is well done. The researchers have used the
organization writing style systematically and actually, its support based on the template of this
journal is really structured starting from the abstract until references.
References The authors used a Mendeley Application to manage the citation with APA 7
Style.
Almost, the references used five years recently. It is really support for this
content. The researchers succeeded to make the reader become easy to understand
this study.

Elements of Research Critique

The Purpose of the study The aim of this paper is to determine whether intercultural sensitivity and
language proficiency are related among EFL students in Turkey.
The research questions There were three research questions of this study 1) Is there a connection between
Turkish EFL students' intercultural sensitivity and English language proficiency?
2) Is there a statistically significant difference in the intercultural sensitivity scale
scores for EFL learners according to their competence levels?
3) Is there a statistically significant gender difference in the EFL learners' scores
on the intercultural sensitivity scale?
The theoretical The theoretical framework of this research is used clearly and appropriately and
framework it’s appropriate with the title itself. The research used the theory from Chena and
Starosta (2000)
The research The author used a quantitative approach to design the data. The participants were
methodology 325 (120 females and 205 males) EFL students attending an intensive English
program in the School of Foreign Languages of a state university. The random
cluster sampling method is used in this study. Same as like before, the author used
a scale entitled “Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS)”. The scale, created by
Chen and Starosta, contained 24 statements about the person's intercultural
sensitivity that were to be answered on a five-point Likert-type scale (2000)
The significance of The results revealed a weak statistically significant positive connection between
Finding and discussions intercultural sensitivity and English language proficiency among Turkish students
studying English as a foreign language. The participants' intercultural sensitivity
scores varied significantly according to their degrees of English language ability,
though. The findings indicated that the intercultural sensitivity ratings increase
with proficiency level. Additionally, results showed that there was no statistically
significant difference in the intercultural sensitivity ratings between the
participants who were male and female.
The value of the study The paper clearly demonstrates that It is crucial for language teachers and
curriculum developers to incorporate activities or teaching strategies that take into
account intercultural sensitivity in order to indirectly improve English language
learners' competence levels. Given the results of this study, various methods or
programs can be created to raise the intercultural sensitivity of the students and to
speed up the language learning procedure.
Writing style and All of the structure in this research is well done. The researchers have used the
organization writing style systematically and actually, its support based on the template of this
journal is really structured starting from the abstract until references.
References The references consist of around 30 sources. The newest and oldest year is
balanced in this study. The style of this research is APA style. It supports it.

Elements of Research Critique

The Purpose of the study This paper's goals are to first explain the concepts and theories that intercultural
communicative competence involves, and then to show what intercultural
competence would actually entail for teachers and students in language
classrooms in an Algerian context and how to make it easily accessible in real-
world ways.
The research questions There were no research questions are provided in this research
The theoretical The idea of "intercultural communicative competency" (Byram, 1997) has
framework elevated culture to the forefront of language education by incorporating it into
language studies. According to Byram, intercultural communication skills include
the "capacity to establish a shared understanding among persons of different
social identities and [the] ability to interact with others as complex human beings
with numerous identities and their own personality" (Byram, 2002). According to
Byram, a learner who is interculturally competent demonstrates a variety of
affective, behavioral, and cognitive abilities that include the following five
components (Byram)
The research The research methodology is this study is not clear enough. The research did not
methodology mention all the procedures of this study, they just stated the procedure to conduct
the ICC during the learning process. But I think this research used qualitative
research.
The significance of The finding reported that intercultural competence should be integrated into the
Finding and discussions EFL classroom.
The value of the study It is important to emphasize that foreign language teachers should also teach
foreign cultures. Fundamentally speaking, teaching a foreign language is
incomplete without a thorough understanding of the associated culture. Language
teachers have shown a great deal of interest in the subject of teaching and learning
culture, and there has been a great deal written about the subject's importance in
learning other languages. A culture and its language have a distinct, indissoluble
relationship that is founded on the work of educators from different fields.
Writing style and All of the structure in this research is well done. The researchers have used the
organization writing style systematically and actually, its support based on the template of this
journal is really structured starting from the abstract until the references.
References The authors used a Mendeley Application to manage the citation with APA 7

Elements of Research Critique

The Purpose of the study The aim of this paper is to identify intercultural sensitivity elements perceived by
the English department in an Indonesian University.
The research questions The researchers offered the following two research objectives What connection
exists between the language skills of Thai first-year students and their conscience
WTC? What connection exists between language proficiency and perceived
confidence among Thai first-year students? What connection exists between the
language proficiency and self-perceived language use of Thai 1st students?
The theoretical Three categories—intercultural awareness, intercultural adroitness, and
framework intercultural sensitivity—were used to describe the intercultural component in
Chen and Starosta's (2000) conceptual framework.
The research Qualitative and quantitative research.
methodology
The significance of The results demonstrate the significance of three intercultural sensitivity
Finding and discussions dimensions: cultural engagement, respect for cultural diversity, and enjoyment of
interaction. This study advances global discussions on intercultural issues and our
understanding of intercultural features. Additionally, this study offers a
methodological contribution to the set of guidelines used to measure intercultural
sensitivity.
The value of the study This is a really important theory for me to increase my knowledge about my
thesis proposal.

Elements of Research Critique

The Purpose of the study The aim of this paper is to investigate the level of intercultural sensitivity to
student’s faculty of tarbiyah in higher education.
The research questions There were two research questions provided by the authors, those are: 1. How
sensitive to other cultures are the PTs at UIN and IAIN? 2. What context-related
solution contains their intercultural sensitivity?
The theoretical This framework proposed by Chen and Starosta (2000) described the intercultural
framework dimension into three categories: intercultural awareness, intercultural adroitness,
and intercultural sensitivity.
The research This mixed-method interdisciplinary study sought to both influence the
methodology development of the contextual elements underlying the intercultural sensitivity of
PTs at IAIN Curup and UIN Raden Fatah Palembang and to statistically assess it.
There were 1,000 students of UIN and 800 students of IAIN who became the
respondents of the survey. They were selected using a convenient sampling
technique.
The significance of The results showed that both colleges' PTs had a high level of intercultural
Finding and discussions sensitivity. Six contextual factors, including preferences in other cultures,
regularly participating in activities of many other cultures, living in a
multicultural environment, interactions with people of different cultures, thoughts
of family and friendship, and cross-cultural comprehension course learning
experiences, served as the foundation for their intercultural sensitivity. The PTs'
strong intercultural sensitivity suggests that they are prepared to instruct
Indonesian multicultural pupils in conformity with the country's K–13 national
multiculturalism curriculum.
The value of the study The high intercultural sensitivity possessed by the PTs of UIN and IAIN (the
samples to represent Indonesian PTs) indicates that they may have been
demographically prepared to be the teachers of the future as envisaged by the
country's current K–13 national curriculum. Additionally, they were prepared to
educate Indonesian multicultural students.
