• Light is one type of energy.
• Sources of light :
PROPERTIES OF LIGHT :
1. Light travels in a straight line

Can the boy see the light of the candle?

Can you see the light of the candle
if the holes of the cards are in a
straight line?

NOW…can you see the light of

the candle if one of the card is
moved?
Phenomena that show light travels in a straight line :

• The speed of light is

3X108 km/s
PROPERTIES OF LIGHT :
1. Light travels in a straight line
OR
2. Light cannot pass through an opaque object
A B C Which
object is :
1. Transparent?
2. Translucent?
3. Opaque?
QUIZ 1: Which screen is transparent, opaque and
translucent?

TRANSPARENT – OPAQUE – light

light CAN pass CANNOT pass
through it through it

TRANSLUCENT – light is
slightly pass through it
Application of this property of light ( Light cannot pass
through an opaque object) is :
SUNDIAL

E1: What factors affect the shape of shadow changes?
Based on this experiment,
identify :
1. Manipulated variable (MV)
2. Responding variable (RV)

1. MV : Position of the
torch /orientation of
the teapot
2. RV : Shape of shadow
Orientation of the object /
Which position of the torch match to the orientation of the tea pot?

E2: What factors affect the size of shadow
changes?
How to make the shadow
bigger?

Object
A. Use bigger torch light
Torch B. Use bigger object
C.Put the object nearer to torch
D. Put the object further than the torch
E. Put object nearer to the screen
F. Put the object further than the
screen
Small-sized shadow Big-sized shadow

Distance between Distance

light source and between Distance between Distance between
object object and light source and object and screen
screen object
• Distance between light source –object :
Further Nearer

• Distance between object – screen :

Nearer Further
QUIZ :
1. Name property of light applied in these pictures :

(a) (b)

2. Name the material that allow some light to pass through.

3. What material will block light to pass through?

4. Which material will not produce any shadow when light shines at it?
5. State two factors / ways to change the shape of shadow?

6. State two factors / ways to change the size of shadow?

PROPERTIES OF LIGHT :
3. Reflection of light
• The light bounces from a surface
• We can see an object because light shines to
the surface of the object and the light is reflected off
from the object to our eyes.
* Arrow = Normal line ( imaginary line
shows the that is 90° to the mirror)
direction of the The light
light travels bounces from
a surface

The light i° r°
shines to
a surface

This is because the angle of incidence

(i°) and angle of reflection (r°) is Why we see the same image
same (i° = r°) from the mirror?

PROPERTIES OF LIGHT :
4. Refraction of light
• Refraction of light = light travels from one medium to another
medium Light bends

• Medium = material that allows light to pass through

- it can be in liquid (water), gas (air) or solid (glass)

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF LIGHT REFRACTION?
EXPERIMENT TIME…………………
Record the observation for each of the experiment below :

1. Put a pencil / chopstick/ spoon into a glass of

water.
Use a transparent glass / cup.
2. Put a magnifying glass on a written text
(newspaper/book).
Now, lift the magnifying glass at a height of 3 cm
from the written text.

3. Bring two similar non-absorbent object ( same size).

Put one of the objects into a glass / a jar of water.

What is the difference between the object in the glass

of water and the object that is outside of the glass?
4. Put a coin in a tall glass / jar of water.
APLICATION OF LIGHT REFRACTION :

1.Water in the swimming pool / river looks shallow.

2. The letters / words look bigger through water /

magnifying glass.

3. The pencil in a glass of water looks bent.

4.Your legs look shorter in a swimming pool.
