Nino M. Perialde Grade XI - STEM1
Activity:
1. CS₂ - nonpolar
2. BCl₃ - nonpolar
3. OF₂ - polar
4. HCN - polar
5. CCl₄ - nonpolar
Analysis:
1.
a. Their electronegativity difference is 0.03 which makes C-S bonds nonpolar.
b. Their electronegativity difference is 1.12 which makes B-Cl bonds polar.
c. Their electronegativity difference is 0.54 which makes O-F bonds polar.
d. The electronegativity difference of H-C bond is 0.35 which makes it nonpolar and C-N
bond has an electronegativity difference of 0.49 which makes it polar.
e. Their electronegativity difference is 0.5 which makes C-Cl bonds polar.
2.
a. CS₂ is nonpolar because of its symmetrical shape which is lineal.
b. BCl₃ is nonpolar because of its symmetrical shape which is trigonal planar.
c. OF₂ is polar because of its asymmetrical shape which is bent.
d. HCN is nonpolar because of its symmetrical shape which is lineal.
e. CCl₄ is nonpolar because of its symmetrical shape which is tetrahedral.
3.
a. Nonpolar: C-S bonds are nonpolar and bonds are symmetrically distributed.
b. Nonpolar: Though B-Cl bonds are polar but it has symmetrical shape which makes it
nonpolar.
c. Polar: O-F bonds are polar and it has an asymmetrical shape.
d. Polar: It has both nonpolar and polar bond. Molecules with one polar bond is always
polar.
e. Nonpolar: Though C-Cl bonds are polar but it has a symmetrical shape.

I understand on how to determine the polarity of simple compounds.
I don't understand on the steps in determining the polarity of a molecule.
I need more information about on how the molecules are classified as polar or nonpolar
depending on the polarity of the individual bonds and the overall shape or geometry of
the molecule. polarity is the result of one atom being more electronegative than the
other. in a covalent bond, the resulting molecule is polarized and has positive and
negative poles. this happens when there is electron sharing. however, instead of sharing
the electrons equally, the more electronegative atom attracts the electrons toward itself.
if the bond were shared equally, then you have a nonpolar bond. this type of bond is
found in diatomic molecules or compounds that are composed of only one element. if
the bond is unevenly distributed, then it is a polar bond. since the polarity is influenced
by electronegativity, then the difference in electronegativity between the combined
atoms can predict what type of bond will be formed.
