GENERAL PROVISION

Particular attention is to be given to minimise unnecessary horizontal surfaces and to ensure

continuity of strength, with any major discontinuities being well integrated to prevent undue
stresses in heavy seas. Fully adequate local strengthening and/ or substantial seats are to be fitted
in way of the, crane, winches, windlass, stern ramp, mast, etc. Welding and burning are to be
buffed smooth if unsightly, liable to cause rusting or liable to snag nets or people. Main and
exposed bulkheads and decks are to be fully watertight. Stiffening members where exposed areas
are preferably to be of bulb plate to facilitate painting and to minimise corrosion. Large drain holes
are to be arranged in the structure to ensure that any likely debris will not block them. Edges of all
structural steelwork are to avoid notches or other places where cracks are likely to start.

TESTING AND RADIOGRAPHY

X-ray or ultrasonic tests are to be made on the structure as required by the Classification Society.
Tests are to show good welding quality compliant with their requirements.

USE OF THICKER MATERIAL

Plating in way of the aft Engine Room bulkhead around the shaft gland, is to be increased in
thickness.
Care is to be taken to avoid unnecessarily increasing the weight of the vessel since draughts and/
or stability can be badly affected by using thicker plating and/or sections. If the Builder wishes to
change or increase any agreed scantlings to facilitate the use of stock or available material etc.,
they are to obtain the Designer’s written approval first but to a limited degree this is aceptable.

WELDING

Good standards of modern welding practices and procedures are to be used with accurate
alignment, fairness, and edge preparation and gap widths. All fillet welds are to be well turned
round the ends of the stiffeners concerned. Unless using penetration welding, the insides of welds
on structural plating are to be gouged out before applying sealing run. All weld slag is to be
removed. Any or rough weld is to be ground to avoid edges where rust can start.
Plate edge preparation for welding is to be carried out in accordance with Classification Society
requirements. All welding is to be carried out by well-experienced qualified welders using
approved rods and methods. If recommended by the makers in the ambient conditions, weld rods
are to be pre-heated before use.
Particular attention is to be given to welding sequences and methods of connection to minimise
distortion of the plating. Weld distortion is to be well rectified to approval. Double continuous
welding is to be applied throughout the machinery and deck machinery seats and supports, in other
stressed areas such as inside the propeller nozzle, above the propeller nozzle, where exposed to the

atmosphere, in water tanks and in the not insulated parts of the Fish Factory area. Staggered
intermittent welding is to be used elsewhere where permitted by the Classification Society.
Unnecessary weld runs are to be avoided. Any defects in welds are to be removed by chipping
from one or both sides as required and re-welding. Any excessive gaps in structure are to be
remedied by cutting a larger opening first and inserting a plate or other suitable means. (Welding
will be discussed in any particular case)

SEAT PLATES

The engine seats are to provide good longitudinal strength with the minimum number of
discontinuities, and the main engine/gearbox seats are to extend well forward and aft to reduce
stresses.

Bilge keels are to be fitted port and starboard, comprising a 300mm bulb plate (or a flat bar with a
solid round rod on the edge) welded to a flat bar on the shell, extending over at least one third of
the ship’s overall length. Ends of bilge keels are to be well rounded to prevent fouling wires. Butts
are to be well designed to minimise stresses

SHELL

Doubles are not to be fitted on the shell plating (except internally at valves and bottom plugs) but
inserts of increased thickness are to be provided in way of the anchor, shell openings, under trawl
gantries, across the transom, at propeller bossing, above the propeller nozzle, etc. Insert plates are
to be chamfered on the outside if the difference in thickness is 6mm or more and are to be flush on
the inside.
Stainless steel drain plugs are to be fitted in the shell at the lowest point or aft end of each tank
with steel protective rings. The spigot around each drain plug is to be large enough to permit re-
boring and each plug is to be well protected, without causing any projection that might snag nets.
They are to be clearly engraved to identify the space they drain.

STEM/BULBOUS BOW

The lower part of the stem is to be efficiently connected to the keel, shell plating and bottom
structure. The upper part of the stem is to be well radiused according with designer indications.
Plating at the relevant part of the bulbous bow is to be of suitable thickness to withstand chafing
by the anchor cable where it is not protected by rubbing bars.

LOWER DECK

The lower deck is to be transversely framed. All the opening or hole will have rounded cornes.
Adequate local stiffening and heavy insert plates are to be fitted under deck machinery and where
other local heavy loads or stresses are expected.
An area of the Lower Deck over the Engine Room is to be kept clear as far as practicable of pipes,
lights, electric cables etc., so that the area can be burned out easily to provide a suitable removal
route for removing a large machinery item from the Engine Room.

The transom gantries are to be of substantial design and construction with three very heavy
gallows brackets, each fitted with heavy duty swivel type trawl blocks of not less than 490mm
diameter, with roller bearings Ferri, Carral or other suitable type, positioned to suit leads from the trawl
winches.

The central block is to be raised to suit stowage for the clump weight. Care is to be taken to ensure
good alignment of all blocks and rollers. Deck obstructions are to be minimised as far as is reasonably
possible and any deckhouses or decks sufficiently close to the trawl wire leads to risk chafing from the
wires are to have strong rollers on substantial bearings, or other suitable protection.

The amidships gantry is to be of box type, well supported and with increased plating thickness and
stiffening at the deck. Two blocks are to be fitted, suitable for the Gilson winches. A platform is fitted
around the net drum for access, with ladders from the Working Deck. The trawl doors are to stow on
the laterals underneath the blocks. A simple, hinged outhaul davit is to be fitted aft, with manual guys,
stowage crutch. All blocks and other rigging fittings, which are attached to the vessel, are to be
supplied by the Builder but fittings, which are attached to the nets or trawl supplied by the Owner.
All blocks have to be provided with roller bearings.

19. F I S H I N G E Q U I P M E N T A N D MANOEUVRES

Shipowner fishing technicians should approve location plans for various fixtures. In any case, due
to the difficulty involved in anticipating manoeuvres in plans, the final location for the fixtures and
hydraulic system to be made on site.

Vessel to be fitted with all fixtures required for stern trawl fishing manoeuvres
For this type of manoeuvre, the following winches are to be installed:

Three lowpressure “ULSTEIN BRATTVAAG” splitwinches, and 2 x two lowpressure

“ULSTEIN BRATTVAAG” netdrums, and 2 lowpressure “ULSTEIN BRATTVAAG”
Gilson winches to be installed with pipes, seats, guidance blocks, rollers etc.

Main and GILSON winches and net drums are owner supply, the builder only include in the price
three million Peseta’s at direct revision to deliver and install the hydraulic pipes. All the valves and
accessories, except pipes, will be delivered by the owner. The owner shall deliver all the fishing
equipment, control panel, hydraulic equipment and accessories etc. fore these winches.

11. PAINTING ETC.

PREPARATION

All steel is to be shot-blasted to at least Swedish SA2.5 standard and immediately primed before
fabrication.

MAIN SCHEME

Paints used for the structure of the vessel are to be supplied by a recognised marine paint
manufacturer. Main paints are to be of International Paints specification, basically using a two-pack
epoxy system. All paints are to be fully compatible with paints readily available in the Netherlands
comprehensive details are to be agreed in advance.

The number of coats applied, application methods etc. is to be to the maker’s recommendations,
care being taken to ensure that the paints are of adequate thickness. Fresh water tanks are to be well
cement washed or painted with special epoxy paint.

GENERAL PROVISIONS

Where welding damages painting, abrasion, or other means, it is to be restored to its former
standard by grit-blasting or other suitable means before application of subsequent coats. Welded butts
and seams are to be given an extra coat of primer. Each consecutive coat of paint (whether of the same
or different kinds) is to be of a different colour to let the painters see which areas have been covered.

Areas in way of keel or bilge blocks and shores are to be well-painted and heavy greaseproof paper
or suitable plastic is to be fitted between them and the shell. Decks are to be painted in sections, which
are then to be fenced off, the timing being chosen to minimise subsequent traffic on the decks. Deck
paints are to be of non-slip type except where they will be under gratings or other coverings.

The paint application is to be undertaken in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s

recommendations and painting must not take place in unsuitable weather conditions. The schedule for
paint application is to be agreed. The use of bituminous type coatings (or others, which give noxious
fumes on combustion or heating) is to be minimised in accessible areas and they must not be used in
the Engine Room.

11. P A I N T I N G E T C.

Painting of the machinery etc. is to be of a good standard, with the final coat(s) by the Builder
unless the suppliers deliver the equipment fully painted to suit the location (and in the desired colour
scheme above the weather deck).

Oil tanks are to be well cleaned, dried and left unpainted. Wood used in Store areas, behind
insulation, in the Fish Factory area, on deck etc. is to be well impregnated with suitable preservative.
Exposed wood in accommodation and the Wheelhouse is to be well polished or given 4 coats of gloss
varnish, well sanded before and between coats. Care is to be taken not to fill tanks until the paints have
properly cured. Door and hatch packing, echosounder transducers, anodes etc. are not to be painted.
Any special treatment recommended by the makers in way of anodes is to be adopted.

Aluminium and galvanised steel pipes or structures are to be thoroughly degreased and etch
primed, followed by the system as specified for surrounding areas. Stainless steel structure and piping
is to be treated in accordance with the paint manufacturer’s recommendations before subsequent coats
are applied.

Once all the steelwork is completed (when the vessel is nearly completed for delivery). The hull
above the waterline, and the upper deck open area’s, inside the bulwarks etc. and every thing disposed
to seawater, will be completely sandblasted and protected by 2 component zinc paint system (to be
discussed).

MARKINGS

Draught marks are to be welded on port and starboard on the stem, above the rudderstock and
outboard of the ramp on the transom. The name and fishing numbers are to be welded on in raked
letters forward, port and starboard, with the name and port of registry aft. All markings are to be
chalked on for approval by the Owner in advance.
For Brittish vessels fishing numbers fore and aft (both sides).

Usual nameplates and notices are to be fitted at pipe valves, electrical fittings, fire appliances, etc.,
using engraved plastic laminated in contrasting colours. Oil and water tank filling pipes are to have
prominent identification in welded or engraved letters. Fishing numbers etc.are to be arranged as
required. Lifebuoys and other life-saving appliance etc. are to be painted with the vessel's name and
fishing number. A simple funnel marking is to be cut in or welded on each side of the aft gantry. A
simple crest with the Owner’s initials or equivalent design is to be fitted on the stemhead. White boot
topping and other main paint lines are to be marked with runs of weld about 750mm apart.

COLOURS

All colours are to be selected from the maker’s standard range by the Owner. Each piping system
is to be painted throughout in a different colour. All items of fire-fighting equipment, fire covers at
vents, etc. are to be red. The Engine Room including the space below floor plates is to be painted white

CATHODIC PROTECTION

Cathodic protection on electrical basis to be installed.

PAINT THICKNESS CHECK

Dry film thickness readings are to be taken by the Builder on all major areas prior to the
application of the subsequent coat. If any deficiency occurs, extra coats are to be applied to reach the
required thickness prior to the application of the next normal coat.

PAINT SPECIFICATION (to check with international paint)

Paints are to be of International Paints specification. The following abbreviations are
