1. Introduction
MSA Security SmartTech Deployment Program
Purpose
This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) describes the process to retrofit the MSA SmartTech unit onto an
existing dual x-ray system. This guide is for all locations where SmartTech units are being used with an iLane
monitor management system. The iLane system is a Smith’s Detection product that allows the control station
to be mounted to an all-in-one operator position.
Note: If there is not an iLane stand installed onto the dual view x-ray machine, proceed to the most recent
version of the CC-MSA-SOP-SmartTech-Installation-Table document to install the SmartTech unit onto the
existing operator table.
This document assumes that two flat panel monitors have been installed onto an iLane monitor stand and are
hooked up to the existing x-ray machine prior to your arrival.
Scope
This SOP is a mandatory document and shall be implemented by all employees and contractors when
engaging in the installation of SmartTech Units with an iLane Stand for this project.
Training
The Program Manager is responsible for ensuring that team members who follow this procedure understand
the SOP’s objectives and other inter-related activities.

Note: All equipment of the iLane stand seen in the After photo not seen in the Before photo will be installed
onto the unit by the local technician.
Step
MSA Action
Security SmartTech Deployment Program
Inform the CC Remote Engineer you have arrived onsite and provide your onsite time.
Contact the POC to get access onsite.
The site’s local contact should show you to the iLane unit(s) you will be working on.
He/she should also show you the package/pallet that contains the unit(s) you will be
installing. This pallet will need to be moved next to the iLane unit you will work on if it is
not already.
1.1
NOTE: The shipment should be all-together, but there is a chance the site employees
may have taken the boxes off the pallet and stored them together without the pallet. The
package will vary in size and contain a different number of boxes depending on how many
units are included.
1.2 Carefully open all boxes and take note of the inventory to ensure all necessary parts are
present (refer to the equipment list at the beginning of this document ). Inform CC Remote
Engineer of any missing parts.
**Important** The serial numbers of the PC, Fortinet Router, and X-Ray Machine should
all match for each unit. The CC Remote Engineer will provide this information so that you
can set aside each pair. No other parts need to match to any specific unit.
Locate the existing iLane stand with dual monitors connected to the X-Ray Machine.

local contact to ensure the X-ray Machine is turned off. When off, the dual
monitors will be blank.
The local contact or x-ray technician should be familiar with this machine. If not, then
he/she simply needs to turn the key to the “0” or “off” position and wait for all the LED
indicators on the keyboard to completely turn off, then remove the key from the panel.
1.4
This is the first step in the SmartTech’s physical installation. The physical installation
(steps 2.0-6.3) should take about 1.5 hours total. Please escalate to the CC Remote
Engineer if any assistance is needed during this process.
Locate the metal iLane Mounting Plate (the SmartTech monitor will be mounted to this
plate, then installed on the iLane stand).
2.1
2.2
NOTE: This pole is usually adjustable and may not be raised to full height. Find the top of
the movable piece towards the front of the assembly. See images of raised and lower ed
position below.
Locate the Ergotron Mounting Kit (the SmartTech monitor will be mounted to the iLane
Mounting Plate using this kit).
2.3
2.3.1
There is a separate black square bracket insert with the Mounting Kit packaging (this
square bracket eventually gets screwed onto the back of the monitor). Additionally, there
are four shiny silver screws wrapped in cardboard with the Mounting Kit.
Use these four screws to fasten the square bracket onto the end of the Ergotron Mount.
Do this before you attach the square bracket onto the back of the monitor.
Square Bracket
2.3.2
2.3.3
Attach the square bracket end of the Ergotron Mount to the back of the monitor. Use the 4
screws removed in step 2.3.3 to secure the square bracket.
The recommended way to attach the bracket to the monitor is to lay the monitor flat on
some of the packaging (to protect the screen) and attach the Ergotron Mount.
2.3.4
2.4 Lift the entire mounting mechanism you put together including the Monitor, Ergotron
Mount, and Mounting Plate. Slide the Mounting Plate bottom end into the tracks/slots of
the iLane stand located on the front sliding pole you previously revealed in step 2.2.
Once inserted all the way, tighten the screws and nuts holding the mounting plate into the
tracks. You may need to use a thin screwdriver or other tool to hold the nuts in place while
you tighten the screws. The mount should be tight enough that it lays flat against the pole-
it should not wiggle or move.
Note: If the screws are too long to be fastened using this method, flip the screws around
and install them in reverse to the steps shown above. The plate should be secure against
the stand and not loose.
Reattach the cap you removed previously to the top of the iLane pole. Also, reattach and
tighten the four screws you removed (done in step 2.2).

Note the order of displays: Top Middle = NEW SmartTech Monitor, Bottom Left = X-Ray
Machine Monitor 1 (or A), Bottom Right = X-Ray Machine Monitor 2 (or B)
2.6
2.7
Note: If the power cord does not reach the wall outlet, please contact the site’s local
contact to see if he/she can provide an extension cord to accommodate the distance. Also
inform the CC Remote Engineer assisting with the install.
Plug the SmartTech monitor power cord into the back of the monitor. Plug the other end
of this cord into the Power Strip. Neatly coil the slack between these two points and
secure it behind the two monitors so that it is hidden from the front of the unit.
2.8
Note: You will turn on the monitor at a later point in the install. However, the monitor may
power on when you plug it in. The Tiny PC inserted into the monitor may also turn on. If
they do, they will display an error as there is no network connectivity. If this happens, you
may need to reboot the PC once network connectivity is established later in the install.
Remove the Fortinet Router from the box. Items in the box should include:
1. Cellular LTE Fortinet Router (white box), QTY 1
2. Antennas, QTY 2 (may also have optional upgraded antennas)
3. Power Supply, QTY 1
4. Ethernet Network Cable, QTY 1
5. SIM Card (already inserted in Fortinet), QTY 1
3.1
**Important** If this site has multiple units, there is a specific Fortinet that needs to be
paired with a specific PC and a specific X-Ray Machine in order for the unit to function.
This information can be provided by the CC Remote Engineer. Both the PC and Fortinet
serial numbers can be found on a sticker located on the device. The X-Ray Machine
usually has a sticker with this information as well. If you cannot find it, ask the local
contact to provide the machine’s serial number.
Attach the two antennas to the sides of the Router. Be careful not to overtighten the
antenna to prevent risk of damaging them.
3.2
Note: There may be optional upgraded antennas shipped with the router. If the upgraded
antennas
MSA Security are Deployment
SmartTech included, please use these and install them in the same manner as the
Program
standard antenna.
Example of a possible upgraded antenna model:
Plug the power supply connector into the port labelled “DC 12VDC” on the router with the
locking clip facing up. Plug the other end into the Power Strip.
3.3
Plug one end of the Ethernet Cable into port 1 on the Fortinet Router. It is important to
only use port 1 as the other ports are disabled. The other end of this cable will get
plugged into the Tiny PC behind the SmartTech Monitor later in this process.
3.4
3.5
Note: Make sure the antennas are pointing straight up towards the ceiling. The network
connectivity will be negatively impacted if they are not.
Neatly coil the excess slack of the Fortinet power cable and the Ethernet Cable and
secure it behind the bottom two monitors so that it is hidden from the front of the unit. Zip -
tie the coil in two places to ensure it is kept neatly together.
Reference the following page for a full topology of the cabling and equipment for the
SmartTech unit. This topology includes steps you performed previously in addition to
steps you will perform later.
**Important*** All cables being installed need to be neatly secured to the iLane stand. No
cables should be hanging loosely off the unit as it creates a trip hazard and equipment
4.1 can potentially be knocked off while the unit is in use. There will be significant amounts of
extra cable length that will need to be organized and secured. See pictures after the cable
topology for the way in which these cables should be organized. Zip-ties are preferred for
organizing and securing these cables. Adhesive Velcro and Normal Velcro can also be
used as needed. No tape can be used to manage the cables or anywhere else on the
unit.
Note: All excess cables are neatly Note: Hardly any cables are visible from
wrapped into one coil and zip-tied, the f ront of the unit, and no cables are
making it very neat and organized. loosely hanging down.
4.2
4.3 Plug the USB power cord into the splitters if not already connected.
4.3.1
4.4
Locate the two VGA cables (silver colored) you removed previously from the x-ray
machine monitors in step 4.1 (these cables are the main x-ray video output feeds).
4.4.1 Attach a VGA Gender Changer to the end of each cable. Then attach the x-ray VGA cable
with the Gender Changer you just applied to the male VGA cable connected to the VGA
splitter.
Locate the four Male to Male VGA cables from the package. You will be using these
cables in the next several steps.
4.5
Note: These cables are usually very long in length. Most of the length is not used. Refer
to the cabling example in step 4.1 for how you should organize and secure the extra
length of these cables that is not used.
Take one of the Male to Male VGA cables. Attach one VGA end to the VGA port on the
4.6 right side of VGA splitter like shown below. Attach the other VGA end to the VGA port on
one of the bottom x-ray monitors where you previously removed the x-ray machine VGA
cable from in step 4.1. Repeat this step for the other splitter using a different VGA cable
and the other x-ray machine monitor.
Note: Going forward, the monitor on the bottom left (when standing in front of the unit) will
be referred to as X-Ray Monitor 1. the monitor on the bottom right (when standing in front
of the unit) will be referred to as X-Ray Monitor 2.
Locate the VGA Switchbox. This switchbox will allow the unit’s operator to switch between
which of the x-ray machine monitor’s image is displayed on the SmartTech monitor.
Take another one of the Male to Male VGA cables. Attach one VGA end to the VGA por t
on the right side of VGA splitter like shown below. Attach the other VGA end to the VGA
4.7 port on the back of the VGA switchbox (port 1/A or port 2/B).
Repeat this step for the other splitter using a different VGA cable and the other switchbox
port. Monitor 1 (left) should be going to Port 1 (or A). Monitor 2 (right) should be going to
Port 2 (or B).

Note: Now is a good point to organize the cables you just installed. Remember that all
excess slack of the cables need to be neatly secure behind the bottom two monitors. Any
cables running to a port or outlet need to be tightly fastened and not hanging down
loosely.
5.1
Locate the VGA-to-HDMI adapter cable (this also has a USB cable attached).
5.2
5.3
Insert the USB end of the Cam Link Capture Card into the USB slot in the front of the Tiny
PC. The PC is located in the slot on the back of the SmartTech monitor.
5.4
Note: The Tiny PC should come already inserted into the slot on the back of the monitor.
If the Tiny PC is shipped in a separate box, please take it out and carefully slide it into the
slot. Make sure to push the PC from the front to make sure the connection is tight. In the
photo referenced above, the PC is not fully inserted into the slot and is not drawing power.

end of the VGA-to-HDMI adapter cable and plug it into the USB slot furthest
down on the back of the Tiny PC. The auxiliary end of the cable is not needed and can be
left unplugged.
Note: This is important as this cable requires power via the USB port to operate.
5.7
If for some reason, the USB end will not reach this port with where the VGA switchbox is
located, check and see if a USB Female to USB Male extension cable is included in the
package and use this to extend the cable’s length.
If there is no USB extension cable, move the VGA switchbox to the location shown below
for the cable to reach. The Switchbox should be on the front of the iLane stand with the
buttons facing either up or down. It is important that the Switchbox still be accessible and
usable to the unit’s operator from this location. To secure it to the stand, zip-tie all the way
around or use Adhesive Velcro.
In the steps that follow, we will be connecting the following cables to the Mini PC located
in the slot on the back of the SmartTech Monitor.
1. Network Cable – (Ethernet Connection from the Fortinet Router)
2. Keyboard – (USB connection)
3. Headset – (USB connection)
4. VGA-to-HDMI Cable – (USB Connection) – Already connected from step 5.7
Note: Power for the PC comes from integrated connection to the monitor. Once again,
ensure the Tiny PC is fully inserted into this slot and receiving power.
6.1 3
6.2
Note: A standard keyboard and mouse will be included in the monitor’s packaging. This
equipment will not be used and can be set aside. Only the USB Keyboard with Mou sepad
will be installed.
Locate the USB Headset and place it on the back of the mount for the x-ray monitors.
Connect the USB end into port 3 on the Tiny PC as shown in the image on step 6.1.
6.3
Confirm the Fortinet Router is on and wait for boot up sequence to complete. The Router
7.1 should have turned on when you first plugged it in. Wait 10-15 minutes after this Router
has been plugged in before proceeding to step 7.2.
Report which lights come on the front of the Router to the CC Remote Engineer. In order
for the unit to function properly, both the SVC and 4G light indicator must be lit up solid.
7.2
Note: It is fairly common for the SVC and 4G lights to not come on even after 15 minutes
of being plugged in. In this case, various troubleshooting steps will need to be done in
order to fix the issue. Escalate to the CC Remote Engineer and they will walk you through
those steps. Only proceed to step 7.3 when both light indicators are on.
7.3
When on, the light indicators on both devices will be solid green. If they are
yellow/orange, they are not turned on.
Note: If for some reason the PC does not turn on, make sure the Tiny PC connection into
the monitor is tight. You may need to slide it out and then in again to re-connect it into the
monitor. There is a power button on the front of the Tiny PC.
The Monitor/PC and Fortinet router should now be booted up with network connectivity.
Note: If for some reason the router is on with signal and the PC does not have network
connectivity, please reboot the PC. If the issue continues, escalate to the CC Remote
Engineer for help.
If the network connectivity is successful you will see the test web page displayed.
Once displayed, close out the web page by pressing the “X” at the top right of the page
and the SmartTech software should start up.
8.1
If the SmartTech application does not appear and a Windows 10 Desktop screen shows
instead, simply launch the SmartTech application by double-clicking the ST4.Screener
program located at the top left.
8.2
Note: If you encounter an issue where the SmartTech application is not responding or
becomes frozen while performing this step, reboot the PC by turning it off and back on,
then try again. If the issue continues, escalate to the CC Remote Engineer and they will
provide steps on how to reinstall the application.
Once logged into the SmartTech software, you should a screen similar to what is below.
8.4
Locate a site contact or x-ray technician and ask them to turn on the X-Ray Machine. The
Technician or contact should know how to turn on the machine. If they do not, they need
to do this by inserting and turning the key on the left side of the panel to the “1” position or
“ON” position.
9.1
The site contact or x-ray technician should then push the green button to start up the X-
9.2 Ray Machine.
Note: The green button position may vary on the panel depending on the model.
Wait a moment for the X-Ray Machine software to start up. The monitors should look
similar to what is shown in the image below when the software is running.
9.3
Ask the site contact or x-ray technician to enter their x-ray login credentials to sign-in and
9.4 enable the X-Ray Machine to function.
Once the x-ray machine is powered up, you should see one of the two images below.
A: NOT logged into the SmartTech Application:
10.1
Note: If you are logged into the SmartTech application but one of the button two monitors
does not appear, try two things. First, ensure A or B is toggled on the Switchbox. To be
toggled, the button should be indented and remain that way. A or B needs to be toggled in
order for input to show. Second, reboot the PC, log back in, and try again.
10.2 If not logged into SmartTech Application, please log back in with credentials provided in
step 8.2.
Now make sure the VGA Switchbox is toggled to input A (or 1).
10.3
You should now see a mirror image on the SmartTech monitor of the x-ray monitor on the
bottom left (monitor 1).
MSA Security
Now SmartTech Deployment
toggle the Programto the other input B (or 2).
VGA Switchbox
You should now see a mirror image on the SmartTech monitor of the x-ray monitor on the
10.4 bottom right (monitor 2).
Note: Toggling to quickly back and forth from A to B will result in the input getting stuck. If
this happens, the only way to fix it is to reboot the PC, log back in, and try again. To
prevent this, toggle back and forth slowly with time in between each toggle.
At this point, ask the site contact or x-ray technician to place some object (could be a
leftover box from the equipment you unboxed earlier or any other item) in the X-Ray
Machine and scan the test item to make sure the video feed is duplicating on the
SmartTech monitor.
As the scan is occurring, toggle the VGA Switchbox between input A (or 1) and input B (or
2) to ensure both video feeds are being captured on the SmartTech Monitor.
