Types of washing machines include top loading and front loading. Top loading machines have clothes loaded from the top with a round vessel. They can be semi-automatic, requiring separate timers for wash and dry cycles, or fully automatic with one tub for wash, rinse, and dry. Front loading machines load clothes from the front and are more energy and water efficient.
Clothes dryers work by circulating heated air through clothes to absorb moisture. Vented dryers expel warm air outside while condenser dryers store moisture in a tank, taking longer to dry clothes but working in windowless rooms. Condenser dryers with heat pumps convert warm air to cool, dry air in a closed circuit for energy savings.

Learning Objectives: After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Identify how to use washing machines and dryers
Types and Uses of Washing Machines and Dryers THE WASHING MACHINE
• Washing machine is the machine used to
wash the various types of clothes without applying any physical efforts. With washing machine you don’t have to rub the clothes with hand or squeeze them to remove the water from them. The washing machine is also called as clothes washer or simply the washer. Types of Washing Machine
1. Top loading washing machine:
• In this washing machine the clothes are loaded from the top of the washing machine. There is a cover at the top that helps loading and unloading of clothes in the round vessel that perform the function of the washer as well as the rinse and drier in the fully automatic washing machine. Classification of Top Loading Machine
• Semi-automatic washing machine: This has
separate tubes or vessels for the washer and the drier. There are two separate timers that enable setting washing and drying times. To wash the clothes you have to put the clothes in the wash vessel, put sufficient quantity of the water and detergent and then set the timer. After the specified time, the washing machine will stop. You can remove the clothes and dry them in the sun or you can dry them partially in the drier vessel by setting suitable time. Classification of Top Loading Machine
• Fully automatic machine: In fully automatic washing
machine there is only one tub that serves as the washer, rinse as well as the drier. Depending on the number of clothes or the weight of the clothes, the machine takes in the sufficient amount of water and detergent automatically and sets the timer for wash and drying automatically. All you have to do is just provide the water connection, put the detergent from time-to-time in its storage space and put the clothes, the fully automatic washing machine does the rest of things automatically HOW TO OPERATE TOP LOAD WASHING MACHINE 2. Front loading washing machine:
• In this machine the clothes are loaded from the
front side. • The studies have shown that the front loading washing machines consume less electric energy, water and detergent and also give better washing results compared to the top loading washing machine.
HOW TO OPERATE FRONT LOAD WASHING MACHINE Clothes Dryer
• Dryers draw air from the room and into
the machine. The air is then heated and circulated through the clothes to absorb moisture. The hotter the air, the dryer your clothes will be. • Vented Dryer Types: The warm, damp air – extracted from your clothes during the drying process – needs to be expelled through an open window or space, or through a vent or ducted hose (ensure your designated space can accommodate these). Vented dryers are affordable and effective but tend to be noisy and energy-consuming. Condenser Dryer The warm, damp air goes through condensation, whereby the extracted moisture is stored in a tank, while the air is reheated to dry the clothes. As there is no need to release air out of the dryer, the condenser dryer can work in a windowless room. However, clothes take a longer time to dry and the water tank needs to be emptied. Condenser Dryer with Heat Pump • The warm, damp air is converted into cool, dry air. This air is then reheated before it enters the drum again. This dryer is also suitable for windowless rooms. The closed circuit, which allows the recycling of air, also allows energy savings of about 50 per cent. DIFFERENT TYPES OF DRYER
