4.1 INTRODUCTION
1. In Form Three, we have learned about to solve simultaneous equations between two linear equations
with two unknowns.
2. In Form Four, we will learn about to solve simultaneous equations between linear equation and non-
linear equation which is quadratic equation with two unknowns.
Example 1 :
Given x − y = 6 and x 2 − 7 x + 10 = y . Solve the equation.
Solution:
x− y =6
y = x−6 1
x 2 − 7 x + 10 = y 2
Substitute 1 into 2 ,
x 2 − 7 x + 10 = x − 6
x 2 − 8 x + 16 = 0
( x − 4)( x − 4) = 0
x=4
Substitute x = 4 into 1 ,
y = 4−6
y = −2
Example 2:
The straight line y = 6 − 2 x intersects the curve y 2 + xy − 8 = 0 at points A and B. Find the
coordinates of points A and B.
Solution:
y = 6 − 2x 1
y 2 + xy − 8 = 0 2

(6 − 2 x ) + x (6 − 2 x ) − 8 = 0
4 x 2 − 24 x + 36 + 6 x − 2 x 2 − 8 = 0
2 x 2 − 18 x + 28 = 0 simplify
x 2 − 9 x + 14 = 0
( x − 7)( x − 2) = 0
x = 7 or x = 2
Substitute x = 7 , x = 2 into 1 ,
(i) x = 7
y = 6 − 2(7) (7,-8)

(ii) x = 2
y = 6 − 2(2) (2, 2)

The coordinates of point A and point B are (2, 2) and (7,-8)
Example 3:
Given A (-2h, 5k) is the solution to the simultaneous equations x 2 + y 2 = 5 and x + 2 y = 3 , find the
values of h and k.
Solution:
Method 1
From the coordinate (-2h, 5k),-2h is the value for x and 5k is the value for y. Hence change the terms x
and y with -2h and 5k respectively.
(−2h) 2 + (5k ) 2 = 5
4h 2 + 25k 2 = 5 1
(−2h) + 2(5k ) = 3
10k − 2h = 3
10k − 3
h= 2
