Ques 2.Why are wetlands important?

Wetlands play a critical role in maintaining many natural cycles and supporting a wide
range of biodiversity. They purify and replenish our water, and provide the fish and rice that
feed billions. They serve as a natural sponge against flooding and drought, protect our
coastlines and help fight climate change.

Ques 3.life in wetlands- write about any one type of plant commonly found near wetlands.

The plant which is common in wetlands is water lilies

Water Lilies
. Water lilies are found all over the world, in a variety of shapes and colors, but
are found in freshwater ponds, marshes, and swamps. They thrive in tropical
and temperate climates.

Water lilies have stems that are buried under the mud at the bottom of their
home wetland. These stems connect to stalks, which support the floating
flowers and leaves (commonly referred to as lily pads). Because they can float
to the top of the water, they are able to get sunlight so that they can grow. The
leaves provide shade to the water, which keeps the temperature cool during
the summer. The flowers cannot survive in the cold, so they die in the winter,
but the submerged roots and stems are able to survive, allowing the lily to be
a perennial plant.

Ques 4.list any 5 wetlands in and around delhi

Bhalswa Lake

ques 5.why are wetlands degrading and why should we worried?

Wetlands are threatened by reclamation and degradation through drainage and

landfill, pollution (discharge of domestic and industrial effluents, disposal of solid
wastes), hydrological alteration (water withdrawal and changes in inflow and
outflow), over-exploitation of natural resources resulting in loss of biodiversity and
disruption in ecosystem services provided by wetlands.
We should be worried because Several people depend on wetlands for their
livelihood as well as for food and water. Some wetlands also play a role in
combatting the impacts of climate change like floods and extreme weather events.
Wetlands are also amongst the earth’s top carbon stores and their conservation can
help in reducing carbon emissions.

Ques 6. What is being done to conserve wetlands

Efforts to conserve wetlands in India began in 1987 and the main focus of governmental efforts was
on biological methods of conservation rather than adopting engineering options. A national wetland-
mapping project has also been initiated for an integrated approach on conservation. In certain
wetland sites it is heartening to see the Government, NGOs and local community coming together to
save our wetlands and thus realize the objectives of Ramsar Convention.

Ques 7. How can citizens support wetland conservation

Joining a local wetland protection or preservation organization

Volunteering to remove litter from your local wetlands.
Planting trees, shrubs, and flowers that are native to where you live.
Donating to organizations that focus on wetland protection.
Observing
park rules when visiting a wetland for fun
