Critical Assignment 2: Thematic Unit Proposal Template

Detailed Instructions: STEP 1. Write a Unit Proposal. The proposal consists of the answers
to the following questions. All questions must be answered. All answers must be complete.
Failing to answer all the questions or failing to answer the questions with complete information
will delay permission to continue with the project. You must provide the answers to the
following questions by the due date and time; you will receive permission to continue writing the
unit plan. These answers cannot be changed without written permission from the instructor once
approved. If you feel you must change something in this proposal, send me an email
immediately and put in the subject “Request for Proposal Changes.” Follow the format below
to answer the questions. .

Remember the following as you prepare to write your own objectives that will align to the
content area Florida Standard and the English Language Development Standard:
1. To write content objective, go to http://www.cpalms.org/Public/
2. To write an academic language objective, go to
https://www.cpalms.org/Public/search/Standard
You will click on English Language Development Standard and then click, again, on the
highlighted box. Find the ELD standard for your chosen content. These standards are
broad in nature. You can also find these standards on page 45 in the Wright text. When
writing your academic language objective, utilize Box 2.4 on page 46 in Wright’s text.
Remember, receptive functions relate to the language modalities listening and reading
and productive functions relate to the language modalities speaking and writing.

Please recall that EACH objective MUST contain three (3) parts: a condition, a performance, and
a standard. You also must define your standard. This means explain how the % is calculated. If
it is writing or speaking it may be calculated by a rubric or checklist. All objectives are written
using the same set formula:

Given a “condition”, the student will “perform” with “standard” %

accuracy or _________ / ____________ correct.

UNIT PROPOSAL:
1. Which grade do you want to write your lesson plans for? (pick any grade, but the higher
grades are easier than the lower grades because we are including learning strategy instruction)

2. Which content area do you want to teach? (science, social studies, or math ONLY)

3. Which subject area within that content area do you want to teach? (choose any within the
content areas listed above; examples of subject areas are life science (in science), civics and
government (in social studies), and geometry (in math)

4. What will your unit’s theme be? (The theme should be expressed in a single word or short
phrase, not in a sentence. It must match your content and subject areas. Example of a good
expression of theme: Reading Maps. Example of a bad expression of theme: Learning how to
read maps and locate continents, countries, bodies of water, the United States, states, state
capitals and the national capital.)

5. On which day will you teach a learning strategy? In what order will you cover the language
modalities? (Remember, the language modalities are speaking, reading, listening, and writing;
pick an order that makes sense for your activities.)
