TECHNICAL SERVICE DATA SHEET

Gardobond 159 M Code: 6237/6572

Rev No: 01
Rev Date: Mar 2004

SCOPE

GARDOBOND 159 M has been developed to produce a Zinc, Nickel, and Manganese (Tri-cation)
phosphate coating on steel surface by full dip application method. It can be used as a pretreatment before
conventional paints or powder coating.

MATERIALS

GARDOBOND - 159 M
GARDOBOND ADDITIVE 31 or Gardobond Additive 24 M
GARDOBOND ADDITIVE 39
GARDOBOND ACCELERATOR 14 or Gardobond Additive 130 Z

MAKE UP OF GARDOBOND - 159 M BATH

a) Fill the tank about three - quarters full with clean water.

b) For each 1000 liters of working solution, add 2.0 lit of Gardobond Additive 31 or 1.5 Kgs of
Gardobond Additive 24 M and circulate and add 40 lit of GARDOBOND - 159 M

c) Add sufficient water to bring the solution up-to the working level.

d) Heat to the operating temperature 50 - 550C.

e) Immediately before processing any work, add 0.4 ltrs of GB Accelerator No.14 or 150 gms of
Gardobond Additive 130 Z pre dissolved in about 3 times of water, per 1000 litres of working
solution.

OPERATING PARAMETERS

TESTING & CONTROL

TOTAL ACID

Take a 10ml sample of the working solution, place in a beaker and add 25 ml of distilled water together
with 5 drops of Phenolphthalein indicator and then titrate with 0.1 N Sodium Hydroxide to a permanent
pink colour. The number of ml. of Testing Solution No. 1 used is a total acid pointage. The total acid
should be maintained within the range of 23 -25 points.

FREE ACID

Take a 10ml sample of the working solution, place it in a beaker. Add 25 ml of distilled water together
with 5 drops of Bromo Phenol Blue and then titrate with Testing Solution No.1 , 0.1 N Sodium
Hydroxide to a colour change from yellow to light blue. The number of ml. Testing Solution No. 1 used
is the free acid pointage. The free acid should be maintained within the range of 1.0 to 1.7.

ACCELERATOR POINTAGE

Take 50 ml sample of the working solution, place in a beaker and add 20 drops of Testing Solution No.
8- 1:1 Phosphoric acid, Sulphuric acid mixture. Titrate with solution No. 6 with swirling, until a
permanent pink / red colour is obtained stable for about 20 seconds. The number of ml of Testing
Solution No. 6 used is an accelerator pointage. The accelerator pointage should be within a range of 2-4
points.

TOTAL ACID REPLENISHMENT

a) Add 1.43 lit of GARDOBOND - 159 M per 1000 litres. of working solution to increase the strength by
1 point.
b) For any drop in pointage due to mechanical loss of solution (desludge, leakage's etc.), add 1.43 lit of
GARDOBOND - 159 M and add 0.13 lit of Gardobond Additive 31 per 1000 lit of working solution to
increase the strength by 1 point.

FREE ACID CONTROL

Addition of 0.12 lit of Gardobond Additive 31 per 1000lit of working solution will result in 0.1 point
decrease in free acid.
Gardobond Additive 31 should be diluted 10 times by water before addition in GARDOBOND - 159 M
bath.

ACCELERATOR REPLENISHMENT

An addition of 0.2 lit Accelerator No. 14 or 75 gms of Gardobond Additive 130 Z for each 1000 lit of
working solution will raise the Accelerator pointage by 1.0
ALL THESE ABOVE THREE TESTS WOULD BE CARRIED OUT ONCE IN A DAY AND
CONTROL MEASURE SHOULD BE TAKEN.

SLUDGE CONDITIONING

The sludge produced through processing can be conditioned so as to make it non-adherent and easy to
rinse from treated surface, with the addition of Gardobond Additive 39. The required quantity of
Gardobond Additive 39 will vary from plant to plant.
Chemetall-India Pvt Ltd -3- Gardobond -159 M

As an approximate guideline, after every 4 to 6 hours, add 0.1 ltr of Gardobond Additive 39 for each
1000 litrs of working solution.

This process needs surface conditioner Activation.

SAFETY INFORMATION

GARDOBOND - 159 M contains phosphoric acid and is corrosive.

GB Accelerator 14 or GB Additive 130 Z contains sodium nitrite, it is harmful if swallowed with liberate
a toxic gas in contact with strong acids, and contact with combustible materials may cause fire.

Gardobond Additive 31 or Gardobond Additive 24 M contains sodium hydroxide, it is corrosive

Gardobond Additive 39 is essentially non-hazardous.

Avoid contact while handling the materials and wear suitable protective clothing, such as chemically
resistant gloves, rubber aprons and boots, and eye face protection. In case of contact with eyes,
immediately wash with plenty of water and get medical attention.

In case of contact with skin or clothing wash immediately with plenty of water, removing any
contaminated clothing which should be washed before reuse, and get medical attention. It is advisable to
keep hydrofluoric acid burn jelly available for use as recommended by the manufacturer in case of
accidental contact involving GARDOBOND - 159 M

GARDOBOND - 159 M working solution is relatively harmless but continual contact with the skin
should be avoided and it is recommended that operators should wear rubber gloves and eye / face
protection.
