Installation on Sloped Roofs
(Horizontal Tube Orientation)

Overview of System Installation

This installation method can be used for

any application type.

For systems that combine DHW and

space heating supplement, this is the
preferred installation method for sloped
roofs. Panels can be stacked one above
the other or side by side.

Note:
Refer to page 43 for supply and return
piping configurations.

For this installation method the general

connection set with air-vented u-pipe
must be used. The collectors must be
installed so that the vacuum tubes are
slightly inclined upwards towards the
header. A slope of 1/4” per ft. is
recommended to eliminate air from
being trapped at the glass end of the
tube.

Installation on Sloped Roofs
(Vertical Tube Orientation)

Overview of System Installation

This installation method is best suited

for DHW or pool systems with constant
loads.

IMPORTANT
This method is not recommended for
applications that combine DHW and
space heating supplement or any other
application where long periods of
stagnation are expected.

Horizontal tube orientation is

recommended for applications that
combine DHW and space heating
supplement (see page 8).

If this installation method is used for

applications that combine DHW and
space heating supplement, a heat
rejection circuit must be used to avoid
collector stagnation.

The collectors should be installed so

that the header is slightly inclined
upwards towards the supply and return
pipe connections, where an air vent
should be located.

Installation on Flat Roofs

Overview of System Installation

This installation method allows for

collectors to be mounted on a flat roof
with tubes parallel to the roof and can
be used for any application. Ballast
weights are typically used to hold the
collectors in place, however collectors
can also be mounted to substructural
frames.

IMPORTANT
Installations on flat roofs must have
tubes installed to allow for proper
venting of air. The collector must be
installed with an upward slope to the
connection housing to allow air to
escape. A slope of 2° or 1/4” per foot
is recommended.

Align the collector panel with the

absorbers facing south and with the
tubes mounted in an east-west
direction.

Maximum tube rotation is 25° to avoid

shading. This limits the absorber plate
angle of inclination range from 0° to
25°.

Mounting Collectors to Ballast Weights

This installation method allows for collectors to be mounted on a flat roof with

place, but collectors can also be mounted to substructure frames.

Flat roofs with gravel filling:

Clear gravel from position of concrete slabs.

With plastic roofing:

Place concrete slabs only on protective interlayers, e.g. protective mats.

Freestanding Installation

Overview of System Installation

This installation method is best suited

for DHW or pool systems with constant
loads.

IMPORTANT
This method is not recommended for
applications that combine DHW and
space heating supplement or any
application where long periods of
stagnation are expected.

If this installation method is used for

applications that combine DHW and
space heating supplement, a heat
rejection circuit must be used to avoid
collector stagnation.

This installation method can be used for

flat roofs or ground mounting. Support
frames can be attached to ballast
weight, concrete posts or to
substructural frames.

If several collectors are arranged parallel

behind each other, keep a distance of
“z” between the front fixing leg of the
1st row and the front fixing leg of the
next row. Refer to page 32 for
determining the collector row distance
“z”.

Align the collector panel towards the

Determining the Collector Row Distance “z”

IMPORTANT
When installing several collectors in
series, maintain a distance of “z”.

Example:

Toronto is located at approx. 43°
latitude.
1. Determine the angle of the sun β.
This should be chosen so that the
midday sun December 21 falls on the
second row of collectors without
z being obstructed by shadows.

Solar angle β:
z β= 90°-23.5°-latitude
=

constant value for northern latitudes)
Legend:
z=Collector row distance β= 90°-23.5°-43°=23.5°

Installing the Vacuum Tubes

CAUTION
The vacuum tubes can become hot or
break if insufficient care is taken. To
avoid the possibility of skin burns, it
is recommended to install the tubes
on a cloudy day, or in the evening
when direct sun is no longer shining
on the collector location. Cover the
collectors after installation of tubes to
avoid overheating.
Wear gloves and eye protection to
avoid injury in case the vacuum tubes
are damaged during installation.

CAUTION
Do not twist the vacuum tubes by the
glass. Avoid any pushing or rotating
of the tube while holding the glass.
Push or rotate the tubes by holding
the metal tip only.

Initial Start-up

The collector circuit must be protected

in such a way that at the highest
possible collector temperature
(shutdown temperature) no heat
transfer fluid can escape from the
safety valve, or the air vent.
This is achieved by the appropriate
sizing of the expansion tank and
matching of the system pressure.

IMPORTANT
Under cold fill conditions, a minimum
static pressure must be maintained. It
can be calculated by the following:
15 psig +0.45 psig x_____h(ft.)
or
1.0 bar + 0.1 x_____h(m)

CAUTION
The pressure relief valve must be piped
to the overflow container or drain at all
times, since excessively hot fluid can
discharge from the system.

CAUTION
After de-aeration, the air vent c/w
shut-off at top of system must be
closed. To protect the solar system
from overheating in the summer, e.g.
during the holidays, do not shut down.
