Getting Started

November 11, 2010 Propagation, the next best thing to being there Slide 5
You will need a Transverter.
A transverter is basically a bi-directional frequency translator

Using a standard HAM transceiver for HF, VHF, or UHF as an

“Intermediate Frequency (IF) radio” the transverter allows
communications at a frequency the radio was not originally
Designed for. In the 10GHz and up contest these transverters are
Typically for the 10, 24, and 47 GHz bands, although there is a
very small club of folks operating in the 75-300 GHz range.

At 300 GHz and above, the Earths atmosphere is for all practical
purposes opaque until opening back up in the Infrared and visible
Light spectrum.

Commercial Equipment Based Solution
Built for 2009 Contest Usage
Multiple reasons for going with commercial solutions for individual components.

• August 2009 operation was planned for 12,650 ft level on top of

Humphreys Peak near Flagstaff Arizona. Equipment would have to be
carried into position by back pack. 2008 Home brew equipment weighed
156 lbs total and that wasn’t going to happen.

• Desired to have better performing equipment from prior year. (2008

system was 90mW and 4-5 dB noise figure and lots of drifting around).

• Had very little real time (and limited ability) to build own equipment from
ground up.

• I had great weather and approximately 130 miles to the visual Horizon. Saturday morning
started out at 42 Degrees and it only got to 56 for the day at the operating location. This is
August in Arizona remember!

• The number of contacts made for the weekend totaled only 6. I was somewhat disappointed,
however there were three contacts into Stephenson Peak in the Laguna Mountains about 45
miles East of San Diego. This is a very long path over dirt, Nearly 320 miles!
