Wolf, by Jack London – Part

1
This story is about a man, a woman,
and a dog. The man’s name was John.
The woman’s name was Margaret. The
dog’s name was Wolf.
Margaret and John were married. They
lived in California. They lived in a small
house on top of a hill.
One night, while Margaret and John
were sleeping, there suddenly was a
loud sound. The sound woke them up.
“What was that?” asked John.
“I don’t know,” said Margaret. “Let’s look outside.”
They opened the door. They looked around.
“Do you see anything?” asked Margaret.
“No,” said John.
Suddenly Margaret said, “Look over there!”
On the grass they saw a large, brown dog. The dog looked tired and hungry. He
was lost.
John and Margaret walked toward the dog. The dog growled at them. He was
not a friendly dog.
“The dog is hungry,” said Margaret. “Let’s give it some bread and milk.” They
went back to the house and got the food. They put the food on the ground. The
dog did not want to eat the food while they were there.
“Let’s go back to the house,” said John.
They went back to the house and looked out of the window.
The dog began to eat. The dog was starved. He ate all the food very
quickly. “That dog eats like a Wolf,” said John.
“It looks like a wolf, too,” said Margaret. “Let’s call him ‘Wolf.’” The next morning
they fed Wolf again. This time the dog was a little friendlier. He let them come
near him.
In the afternoon, their neighbor, Mrs. Johnson dropped in. She saw Wolf. She
said to Margaret and John, “I didn’t know you had a dog.”
“We didn’t,” said Margaret. “We found this dog last night. It was outside the
house.”
Mrs. Johnson was surprised. “Where did this dog come from?” she
asked. “We don’t know,” said John. “It was lost. It came here.”
Mrs. Johnson said, “My brother, Skiff, lives in Alaska. I visited him there last year.
This dog looks like the dogs I saw in Alaska. He looks like the big dogs that pull
sleds there.”
Margaret and John looked at each other. They were surprised.
Margaret said, “But how could Wolf get here all the way from
Alaska?”
