NAVIGATION SYSTEM REVIEW

PRIMARY NAVIGATION SYSTEMS
• INTEGRATED AVIONICS PROCESSING SYSTEM (IAPS) – Navigation system inputs
processed through Integrated Avionics Processor (IAPS)
• Dual VHF navigation systems with three different receivers
• LOC and GS comparators monitor both navigation receivers – If parameters exceeded –
AMBER LOC/GS
• Two (2) GPS antennae and one (1) receiver

SECONDARY NAVIGATION SYSTEMS

WEATHER RADAR
• Weather data line on top of MFD
• Path Attenuation Correction (PAC) – YELLOW BAND behind areas where beam is being
absorbed
• Ground Clutter Suppression (GCS) – Decreases ground return intensity- active for 12 seconds
after pressing center of the GAIN knob
• Sector Scan (SEC) – Scan narrows from 60° left to right to 30° left to right
• ON-SIDE radar control – Range marks are WHITE, OFF-SIDE – AMBER (RADAR NOT
AT THIS RANGE)

TCAS
Test displays:
• TCAS TEST adjacent to VSI
• TRAFFIC in RED adjacent to VSI
• RED avoidance arcs on VSI
• TCAS TEST on MFD
• Traffic symbols on MFD
• “TCAS SYSTEM TEST OK” aural alert

Other Traffic Any traffic within TCAS range CYAN diamond (hollow) ◊
– limit 1200’ vertically
TCAS OVERLAY
• If MFD range < 40 nm when TFC button pressed – Given TCAS overlay
• If MFD range > 40 nm when TFC button pressed – MFD reverts to TCAS screen
• TCAS cannot be overlaid on HSI format – Range is required
• TCAS and RADAR CAN be overlaid at the same time
• Once TCAS overlaid on MFD – Range may be extended and TCAS will remain (only to 40
nm)
• TCAS shows 40 nm around aircraft

RESOLUTION ADVISORIES
• PFD indications – RED TRAFFIC display above VSI
• PFD indications – Appropriate RED and GREEN zones on VSI
• MUST HAND FLY AIRCRAFT INTO GREEN ZONE – AP WILL NOT DO IT
AUTOMATICALLY
• Aural alerts CANNOT be canceled or reduced

ENHANCED GPWS
• Amber GND PROX light illuminates at 60 seconds to impact
• Red PULL UP light illuminates at 30 seconds to impact
• EGPWS utilizes two (2) databases:
–– Terrain Clearance Floor (TCF) – Worldwide coverage of ALL airports with runways >
3500’
–– Terrain/Obstacle Awareness and Alerting Database (TAAD) – Covers all of US, portions of
Canada, Mexico and Bahamas including obstacles HIGHER than 100’ AGL
• Terrain overlay on MFD and overlaid on – NAV SECTOR/FMS MAP
• Terrain function active at all times even though it may not currently be displayed
• Radar and Terrain CANNOT be displayed at the same time
• WHEN A CONFLICTING TERRAIN OR OBSTACLE IS DETECTED, THE
TERRAIN OVERLAY AUTOMATICALLY POPS UP ON THE MFD AND RANGE IS
RESET TO 10 MILES

WINDSHEAR
• WINDSHEAR ALERTS - HEADWINDS and UPDRAFTS – EYEBROWS APPEAR and
command bars will provide escape guidance WHEN TOGA’S selected and AP will disconnect
• WINDSHEAR WARNING - TAILWINDS and DOWNDRAFTS - command bars will
provide escape guidance, and AUTOMATICALLY when WARNING occurs or when TOGA’s
are selected, autopilot, if engaged, will disconnect 2 seconds after WARNING
