Target By the end of this activity, the students will be able to: 1

1. differentiate vectors from scalar

2. draw scaled vector diagrams
3. use polygon method to adding vectors

Hook Did you know that each region has a Philippine Science High Scho 1
ol Campus? Currently, we have 16 campuses except for Bangsamo
ro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao.

Do you know where are these campuses? Using google map, we ca

n search for the location of these campuses. For this activity let’s fi
nd out how far are these campuses from each other.

Ignite Before we proceed to our activity, let’s familiarize how to read a m 3

ap and recall what we have learned about vectors.

Every map has a compass rose, map scale and map symbols.

The compass rose tells the orientation of car

dinal directions (North, South, East and Wes
t).
The map scale relates the distance on the ma 1 cm : 100 km
p with the actual distance on earth. Using th
ese scales, we can determine the actual dista
nce between two points.
The map symbol represents actual landmark Symbol
or objects such as buildings, park or lake. for school

We represent a vector by drawing an arrow. The line shows the ma

gnitude and the arrowhead shows the direction. The tail of the arro
w is the starting point and the tip of the arrowhead is the end point
of the vector.

The vector example shows 3.00 cm, East.

There are 3 ways to add vectors. For this activity we will use polyg

2 Actual time allocation spent by the student (for information purposes only).

on method.

1 We draw the first vector ⃗ A to scale

and correct direction.
2 We add the second vector ⃗ B by
drawing its tail at the tip first vector
with the correct scale and direction.

3 To get the resultant vector ⃗ R , we

draw an arrow from the tail of the first
vector to the tip of the last added
vector. Measure its magnitude and
direction.
Don’t forget to label all your vectors.
Navigate Before we start the activity, prepare the following materials and re 24
ad the procedure carefully.

A. Materials
 Ruler
 Protractor
 Pencil/Pen (black and red)

B. Procedure
1. Print the map at the end of this module.
2. On the map, you can see the compass rose on the upper lef
t hand corner and the map scale on the lower right corner.
3. The starting point of the map is marked with the red pin.
4. From the tip of the red pin, accurately draw vectors ⃗ A to ⃗
E
to find the resultant vector ⃗
R .
Note: Even though you can add vectors in any order to get
the resultant vector, for this activity, let’s follow this
sequence: ⃗ A+ ⃗B +C⃗+ ⃗
D +⃗ E= ⃗R.
5. As you draw these vectors, it will lead you to the next PSH
S campus. Write the name of the campus on the given tabl
e.
6. Draw the resultant vector ⃗ R using a different color of pen
(e.g. red). Write its magnitude and direction.

Resultant vector ⃗
R = ___________________
D. Questions

1. What is the total distance travelled of someone who follow

ed the map? Explain how it is done. Show any computatio
n you performed.
2. What is the displacement? Explain how it is done.

Knot From this activity, we learned the difference of distance and 1

displacement, a common example of scalars and vectors. We
can also add two or more vectors using polygon method. By
using this method, we must draw the vectors as accurate as
possible to lessen the error.

D. Questions

1. What is the total distance travelled of someone who followed the map? Explain ho
w it is done. Show any computation you performed.

The total distance travelled is 2445 km . Add all the magnitude of the vectors to get
the total distance travelled.

d total= A+ B+C + D+ E

338 km+547 km+340 km+ 520 km+700 km=2445 km

2. What is the displacement? Explain how it is done.

The displacement is 2753 km, 663 S of E. It is equal to the resultant vector.
