Summary

Using Translation In Teaching


As translation is progressively seen as a necessity rather than a specific skill, students can
acquire skills that are useful for their daily and professional life. For example, it can be used to
practice writing translations from the first language to the second language. By accessing denser
L1 resources, students can use translation as a complement to writing activities. Traditional
translation teaching methods are only useful for literary and grammatical purposes, whereas a
communicative approach to translation can encourage groups of students to pursue broader
goals. Translation also requires a motivated class leader, namely the Teacher. Teachers must
have advanced knowledge of L1 and L1 culture. Without this translation, it could create more
problems than good. Furthermore, if a teacher uses L1 in translation activities it can undermine
their efforts to maintain an English speaking environment in the classroom. Students will
definitely see it as an L1 resource.

Translation in groups can encourage students to discuss the meaning and use of language
at the deepest possible level as they work through the understanding process and then look for
equivalents in other languages. Translation is a natural activity in real life and is increasingly
needed in a globalized environment. Translation can be a support in the writing process,
especially at the lower level. Teachers can focus their translation activities on very specific
learning objectives such as vocabulary, grammar points, styles, and specific notes. It's also a
good advantage for working with other tools like email and class web pages. Lastly, for many
students, developing translation skills is a natural and logical part of getting to a higher level,
and doing it well is very motivating.
