80: Adventure; encountered something frightening and ran away, abandoning companion
Background: Outlander
- Origin: tribal marauder
- Personality trait: I place no stock in wealthy or well-mannered folk
- Ideal: Glory. I must earn glory in battle.
- Bond: I suffer awful visions of a coming disaster, and will do anything to
prevent it
- Flaw: Violence is my answer to almost any challenge.
- Lizardfolk Quirk: I hate waste, and see no reason not to scavenge fallen enemies.
- Personal totem: an egg-sized stone, shaped like a bear
- Superstition: Dwarves have lost their spirits, and are almost like the undead
(which is why they live underground).
During his past, Kothar's tribe was hunted to extinction by dwarves. While Kothar,
like more lizardfolk, cares little about the deaths of his family members, he has
learned to mistrust dwarves, who are rumoured to be soulless, little better than
the undead, and driven entirely by greed. He also hates enchantments- his brother
died fighting a demon which had enchanted Kothar, teaching the feral warrior that
such magics were a coward's way out of combat. This had led to a general dislike of
everything unnatural.
Kothar is not much of a talker- or a thinker. His first and only approach to any
problem is to hit it with an axe until it stops moving, then hit it some more and
possibly eat it. He has no concept of friendship or kindness, but becomes fiercely
protective of anyone he feels is useful to him.
History
Kothar was part of a nest of four eggs, with both his parents leaving shortly after
he and his siblings hatched. The tribe was at war- a dwarven hold had claimed the
lands where Kothar's village stood, and his parents had volunteered to go and drive
off the dwarven expeditions coming to claim the land's riches. They left Kothar and
his siblings- his brothers Garurt and Verthica, and his sister Valignat- in the
care of their grandparents. Together, they left the primitive lizardfolk village,
to find a better life out in the wilderness, far away from the dwarves.
Then Kothar's grandmother died, old age finally catching up to her. Despite her
having persuaded her partner to adopt their grandchildren, neither Kothar nor his
siblings cared much about her passing. Once dead, she became a thing of the past,
something the lizardfolk do not place any value on, save for the fresh meat she now
provided.
When a dwarven hunting party found them again several years later, Kothar's brother
Garurt and their grandfather chose to stay and fight. Using their knowledge of the
terrain and their trapmaking skills, they fought the dwarven expedition, until
finally they were found and killed. Using the time Garurt and their grandfather had
bought for them, the other three fled. They soon found themselves in their old
village, burnt to the ground. Only ashes remained, and it soon became apparent what
had happened.
A dragon now nested in what was the lizardfolk's home. No doubt the mighty beast
had been chased from its mountain lair by dwarves, and now resided in the remains
of Kothar's old nest. While it had not noticed the three siblings yet, Valignat
resolved to slay the beast. She had always put more value on traditions and ties to
the past than her brothers, and with their grandparents dead, she could not accept
that their nest had been turned into a dragon's lair. She went to face the beast
alone- her brothers did not share her sentiment, and reasoned that fighting such a
beast over a pile of ash was not worth the trouble. If she wanted to fight it, they
said, she would have to do so alone. She did, hoping her magics would be enough to
reclaim her birthplace. Sadly, they weren't, and she died fighting the beast.
Kothar and Verthica travelled for many months. Garurt had been the best hunter
among them- without him providing them with food, the pair decided to hire out
their services as mercenaries. Verthica was the more charismatic of the two, making
him ideally suited to securing contracts with wealthy clients. This way, they
earned their gold by fighting, which they used to sustain themselves. Kothar didn't
like the fact that he could no longer kill his own prey, but as long as Verhtica
let him eat some of the people they were sent to kill, he didn't complain.
One day they passed through a town, when a priest approached them, begging them to
slay a great evil which had taken up residence in a nearby cavern. Promised the
church's treasures as a reward, the brothers accepted and travelled to the cavern,
to slay whatever was holed up there.
Unfortunately, the great evil which the priest had spoken of proved too mighty for
the lizardfolk brothers. A demon resided there pinning Verthica with its talons
while its magic flooded Kothar's mind with sheer panic. Kothar fled, chased by the
dying screams of his brother.
Once back in town the magic faded, and Kothar flew into a wild rage. These people
had sent his brother to his death, and since the demon was too strong for him,
Kothar took out his anger on the townspeople instead. Not a single villager
survived that day, and when he was done, Kothar simply hacked them up for rations,
then left.
With his brother dead, mercenary work was no longer an option. Kothar was ill-
suited to negotiating the terms of a contract, and he had little patience to deal
with the warmbloods. Instead, he decided to look deeper within himself for
guidance. The spirit of the bear still spoke to him, louder ever since he slew the
village. It urged him on to new battles, to prove his strength and earn his food
the old way- by killing it himself. Eventually, the spirit led him to le Chateau
Gluant. Filled with undead and other monsters, the castle offered him a grand
buffet to test himself against. And the spirit of the bear warned him of something
darker still, making its home underneath the warmblood's castle... Something which
would no doubt truly test his might.
