IV. ACTIVITY

Prepare sample formative and summative assessment tools in Araling Panlipunan Grades 4-6.

A formative assessment is a tool teacher used to give feedback to students and/or guide their
instructions. It is a valuable tool that enables instructors to provide immediate and ongoing feedback to
improve student learning (Shute, 2008) This formative feedback is crucial for improving knowledge,
skills, and understanding, and is also a significant factor in motivating student learning.

A summative assessment is different from a formative assessment in that it does not give feedback to a
student in a formative way. It is not part of the learning process, but rather a true evaluation to
determine, or ensure, the learning has occurred, and outcomes have been achieved. This does not mean
that they don't have value or that they don't need to be well designed. It is especially important in
summative assessments that they are designed to truly evaluate the desired outcome.

VI. ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY

Make an advance reading the process of Instructional planning.

• In general terms, planning means the “act or process of making or carrying out plans.”1 Instructional
planning is a process of the teacher using appropriate curricula, instructional strategies, resources and
data during the planning process to address the diverse needs of students.

REFLECTION

Are you happy with the activity? What did you learn?
Yes and I learned that the purpose of formative assessment is to monitor student learning and provide
ongoing feedback to staff and students. The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student
learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.
