TEACHING SCIENCE

in the ELEMENTARY GRADES

(Biology and Chemistry) MODULE

Is science easy or difficult to teach? What areas in Science Should I study in order to teach well? Will the
topics on living things be taught in Grades 4 & 5? What about Force and Motion? Write your answers on
the space provided.

Science has always been a difficult subject to teach in elementary school. If time is running out of the
school day, the very first subject teachers will usually skip is Science. It also seems to be one of the least
liked subjects for young students as well. Depending on the grades they teach, science teachers may be
expected to be knowledgeable about basic ideas and content from at least five academic disciplines:
biology, chemistry, earth science, mathematics, and physics. Living things are called organisms. All plants
and animals, including human beings, are organisms. Organisms have many needs to fill in order to stay
alive. As organisms, we get everything we need from our environment in order to survive. If an organism
cannot get what it needs from its environment, it will die. The study of organisms interacting with their
environment is the science of ecology. Force and motion are fundamental to all matter in the universe. A
force is anything that can push or pull on an object. Forces influence objects that are at rest or that are
already in motion. Isaac Newton's three laws of motion involve inertia, mass, velocity, and momentum.

APPLY

After having seen the coverage of the two science components, what have you observed in the content
outline for each topic: Matter and Living Things and their Environment? Let us understand the
framework by answering questions that refer to the two areas of discipline and how they move along in
the progression from lower to higher grade level.
Answer the simple survey below:

Statements about (1)

Matter and (2) Living
Things in their Agree Disagree Explanation
Environment

1. In both topics, the As said from our topic

concepts in grade 3 are the lesson in grade 3
simpler than grade 4. ✔️ serves as a fundamental
for the lesson to be
taught in grade 4. The
concepts from grade is
just a stepping stone of
the concept from grade
4 thus what we call
progressio

2.There is a consistent I can say that the topic is

title of the major topic consistent but the
from Grade 3 to Grade ✔️ concepts are getting
6. complicated as the
grade level gets higher.

3. The area on Living Because there are 3

Things and their kind of living on earth.
Environment focused
on three kinds of living ✔️
things Human, Animals
and Plants

4. The Chemistry All of our subject from

components of grade 3 untill now is just
Elementary Science the same but it is
revolve around Matter ✔️ upgraded until it makes
that progressively your advantages.
advance in complexity
from Grade 3 to Garde.

5. In the Elementary If we teach children at

Science framework, an early age then it will
Chemistry which is be a lot easier for them
considered by many as ✔️ in the future because
difficult subject is they have been taught.
taught in Grade 3

6. Elementary Science •Scientific literacy starts

should lead learners to in early childhood and
scientific literacy. continues through
✔️ elementary school.
Scientific knowledge is
necessary to fully
participate in human
culture and democracy
—especially as it
becomes more
technological. The
future of our nation
depends on a
scientifically literate
public.
