curriculum in basic and higher education.
AGREE 6. Teachers should expect that school curricula are dynamic and changing.
AGREE 7. Evaluated curriculum makes judgment about learning.
AGREE 8. Textbooks and modules are written curricula that represent the recommended
curricula.
DISAGREE 9. Only the Department of Education can recommend a curriculum.
AGREE 10. In the heart of all the types of curricula, the teacher has a major role.

Self- Reflect
1. Is it necessary for teachers to learn about school curriculum? Why?

Answer: Yes, teachers need to learn the school’s curriculum. It is because a teacher hold the key
to the curriculum process. Each school has a different curriculum and different teaching methods.
This curriculum identifies the learning outcomes, standards and core competencies that
students must demonstrate before advancing to the next level and teachers play a key role in
developing, implementing, assessing and modifying the curriculum. We must understand that a
good curriculum is one thing, but achieving it can require a lot of resources, and teachers are the
primary resource to help the curriculum float well. Teachers need to understand that curriculum is
content, but when contextualized, it is vivid for students. The teacher’s role in the course process
is to help students develop an interactive relationship with the content and the absolute learning
process. Active learning will increase the focus and retention of the curriculum, thereby creating
an exciting learning environment. Teachers should establish courses that include reflections,
experiments and activities to deliver courses. This interactive method weaves together the
curriculum and hands-on experience, allowing students to immerse themselves in learning. The
course process provides teachers with opportunities for creativity and leaves a unique mark on the
classroom experience.

LESSON 1.2 – The Teacher as a Curricularist

Self- Check
I am a Teacher? Who am I as a Curricularist?

Instructions: Identify on the blanks provided who am I as Curricularist based on the cases
presented.

Case 1 . I have a good idea on how to make my learners pay attention to the lesson. I will use the new
idea and find out if it work. INNOVATOR

Case 2. DepEd sent the standards, competencies and guidelines in teaching the Mother Tongue in Grade
1 in our school. I will study and use it in the coming school year. IMPLEMENTOR

Case 3. There is so much to do in one school day. I seem not able to do all, but I have to accomplish
something for my learners. I have made a daily activity plan to guide me. PLANNER

Case 4. I need a poem to celebrate the World Teacher’s Day. I composed one to be used in my class in
Literature. WRITER

Case 5. My class is composed of learners from different home background and culture. I cannot use a
“one-size-fits all strategy” in teaching so I can respond to the diverse background. In my readings, I
discovered that there are ways of teaching. I tried one by myself and it worked. INNOVATOR

Case 6. Knowledge is limitless. What I learned in college is not enough. I need to know more, so I
enrolled in the graduate school to advance my learning. KNOWER

Case 7. At the end of the year, my performance as a teacher is reflected in the school performance of
my students. So I need to provide a monitoring tool to measure how they are progressing. The result
will inform me how I will address my learners’ weakness and enhance their strengths. EVALUATOR

Case 8. I am teaching in a very far away barangay with no electricity yet. Many of the instructional aids
for teaching sent to our school are films and video tapes which need power. I cannot use them, but the
lessons are very important. So I thought of making an alternative activity. I took my class to the river
and waterfall instead of doing the lesson. INNOVATOR

Case 9. My principal asked me to attend a write shop to make the lesson exemplars in the teaching of
Science in Grade 7. In the workshop, I used my experiences as a science teacher for ten years, and my
knowledge of the subject matter. At the end of three days, I was able to produce lesson exemplars which
I am proud of. KNOWER

Case 10. In Grade 7 to Grade 10 of the K to 12 Enhanced Curriculum, Science as a subject is presented,
taught and learned in a spiral manner. This is part of the DepEd implementing guidelines of the
curriculum. I am a Biology major, and I have insufficient knowledge about the other areas of Science
such as Physics and Earth Science. Because of this dilemma, I have to request the principal that we have
team teaching. Which role of the curricularist, am I trying to do? PLANNER

Did you learn more from the cases? Yes I did, because the roles of the curricularist discussed in the course
is applied to real life scenarios.

Self- Reflect

Choose one from Case 1 to 10 above. Reflect on the case you have chosen and write your
reflections on the box below. Ask your classmates to read and comment on your reflection.

Name: Ericka Shane R. Espejo Case No. 8

A. My Reflections on Case No. 8

This is what I have reflect on case number 8 which is “teacher as an innovator”.

As mentioned in the scenario in Case 8, lack of electricity in the area where you work or teach is a
daunting task, especially when the teaching materials you need to use are electronic. You need to find
another way to impart knowledge to learners while making sure that no matter where you study, your
child has the best learning experience.
Innovation is exciting and transformative. It is based on something that already exists or improves. It
can be a method, a strategy, a device or a product. When we are innovating in education, today we are
remodeled by improving and transforming various education components to meet the needs of the
future.
Every day, teachers use innovation and innovative thinking to promote and guarantee the growth and
learning of children. When we say the word "innovation", not only do we refer to the application of
technology to teach through computers or other technical devices. Innovation includes technological
progress, but it is not only technology.
Innovation in teaching, in simple terms, is the use of the invention and creativity. Teachers continue to
improve existing methods, find better ways to provide children with knowledge, expansion skills and
development of children.
Although schools have different access to resources, innovation does not require access to a large
number of educational materials. To innovate, teachers should be enthusiastic about the challenge of
creating new teaching strategies to meet the needs of a unique group of students. To do this, they need
a lot of creativity. Innovative teachers are flexible and brilliant. They have a vision to improve the
experience of education and learning of children and commit themselves to doing so.

B. What my partner said about my reflections:

The case chosen by my partner is case number 8 which is the teacher as an innovator. On her reflection,
she mentioned that innovation in teaching is the use of invention and creativity. Teachers are working
to enhance existing methods and establish new ways to impart knowledge and skills to their students.
I agree with her, an innovative teacher not stay in one method or strategy, they are always ready to
explore new ideas and improve the strategies in order to provide a good educational experience for
their students. Always remember that students can get easily bored to the things they always see and
experience. Also, learning area does not always agree to what strategy or methods we have like on the
scenario 8, where there the teacher’s learning place have no electricity and most of her instructional
aids needs power. Teachers need to become a creative thinker and become prepared to what
alternative way she must do to provide knowledge with their students.
She also mentioned that innovative teachers are flexible and brilliant, other than that, they are also
courageous because they grab opportunities to learn new things and are not afraid to take risk in their
learning and teaching, also they are curious because they are inquisitive and love to explore new ideas.
