5. World Sustainable Development Summit
The Prime Minister recently addressed Energy and Resources Institute's (TERI) World Sustainable
Development Summit.
Theme is ‘Towards a Resilient Planet: Ensuring a Sustainable and Equitable Future’.
Objective: The World Sustainable Development Summit aims to provide long-term solutions to the global
community on issues related to sustainable development. It brings various stakeholders on a single platform
and initiates a step towards achieving constructive action in combating issues pertinent to the future of
humanity.
Key points
Access to Equitable Energy: India has kept its commitments by ensuring that equitable energy access for the
poor remains a cornerstone of its environmental policy.
Farmers are also encouraged to set up solar panels under the PM-KUSUM scheme, which allows them to
consume and sell surplus power to the grid, promoting sustainability and equity.
These initiatives included the Ujjwala Yojana scheme, which provided clean cooking fuel to 90 million
households.
Emissions Reduction: The LED bulb distribution scheme (UJALA), which has been functioning for almost
seven years and is said to have saved close to 220 billion units of electricity and prevented 180 billion tonnes
of CO2emissions per year, was discussed.
The National Hydrogen Mission intends to tap into "green hydrogen," and it is up to academic and research
institutes like TERI to develop scalable solutions.
Ramsar sites: The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has recognized India's efforts, and
India now has 49 Ramsar sites (wetlands) spread across more than 1 million hectares.
India, with 2.4 percent of the world's land area, is home to nearly 8% of the world's species.
Restoring degraded land: Since 2015, one of the key priority areas has been the restoration of degraded land,
with over 11.5 million hectares restored.
o India firmly believes in fulfilling all of its UNFCCC commitments. During the CoP-26 summit in
Glasgow, India also increased its ambitions.
o India, for example, has stated that it will achieve carbon neutrality by 2070.
o India is on track to meet its national commitment under the Bonn Challenge to achieve land
degradation neutrality.
Coordinated efforts: Sustainability requires coordinated effort for the global commons. The efforts of India
have recognized this interdependence.
o India's goal through the International Solar Alliance is "One Sun, One World, One Grid."
o The world must work to ensure that clean energy from a worldwide grid is available everywhere and
at all times. This is the "world" approach that India's values stand for.
o It also asked countries to act in accordance with globally agreed-upon rules, while keeping in mind the
principles of equity, Common but Differentiated Responsibilities, and Respective Capabilities (acting
on climate change based on national circumstances).
o The Paris Agreement goals will not be met unless all countries implement equity by staying within
their fair share of the global carbon budget.
Initiative on Infrastructure for the Resilient Island States: The Coalition for Disaster Resilient
Infrastructure (CDRI) seeks to strengthen infrastructure in areas prone to natural disasters. India also launched
an initiative called "Infrastructure for the Resilient Island States" on the sidelines of CoP-26.
The most vulnerable are the island developing states, which require urgent protection.
LIFE - Lifestyle for Environment Initiative was launched:
o LIFE is about making lifestyle decisions that improve our planet. LIFE will be a global coalition of
like-minded people who will promote sustainable lifestyles.
o They will be known as the 3Ps - Pro Planet People. This movement is the Coalition for LIFE.
