2. OBJECTiVES

To apply the mathematical approaches of advanced calculus to solve engineering problems.

3. CONTENTS

PART 1: FUNDAMENTALS OF CONTINUUM MECHANICS


Cartesian tensors, symbolic notation, index notation, matrix, transformation of tensors, principal values and vectors, tensor
calculus, Gauss integral theorem, Stokes integral theorem.
Stress analysis: Cauchy stress vector, Cauchy stress tensor, equilibrium of forces and moments, symmetry of the stress
tensor, principals stresses, maximum and minimum stress values, Mohr circles, yielding criteria.

PART 2: NUMERICAL METHODS TO SOLVE DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS


Euler method, Runge – Kutta method, systems of differential equations, Matlab implementations. Boundary values problems,
Finite differences method, Galerkin method.

PART 3: LAPLACE TRANSFORM


Transform of fundamental functions, displacement theorem, Laplace inverse transform, Convolution theorem, applications to
mechanical systems, transfer function.

PART 4: FOURIER ANALYSIS


Orthogonal functions, Fourier series, sine and cosine series, Fourier Transform, discrete Fourier Transform, fast Fourier
transform, applications to digital data acquisition.

PART 5: PARTIAL DERIVATIVE EQUATIONS


Variable separation method, applications to vibration of continuum media, applications to heat conduction.

4. Evaluación: Tres exámenes parciales, escritos, individuales, con libro cerrado. Se dejan las dos mejores notas.
