NEPOTISM
Social values reflect how we relate to society. Social values include justice, freedom,
respect, community, and responsibility. In today’s world, it may seem our society
doesn’t practice many values. We have a rise in discrimination, abuse of power,
greed, etc. Nepotism is one among such and is much prevelant in present society.

 Nepotism is the favourable granted to relatives or friends regardless of merit.


 The word “nepotism” comes from the Latin word “nepos”,”nepotis”meaning
nephew.
 It is very commonly used as a word describing ‘connection’ that allows anyone to
obtain a certain job.
 In the Philippines it is known as “Compadre System” in terms of economic and
employment.
Types of Nepotism

 Papal nepotism
➢ Nepotism gained its name after the church practice in the Middile Age
s,when some Catholic pope and bishops ,who had vows of chastity
,and therefore usually had no children of their own ,gave their nephew
such positons of preference as were often accorded by the fathers to
son.
➢ Several popes elevated nephews and other relatives to the cardinalate
. Often ,such appointments were a means of continuing a papal
“dynasty”.
 Political nepotism
Nepotism is a common accusation in politics when the relative of a
powerful figure ascends to similar power seemingly without
appropriate qualifications
Effects of nepotism

 Unfair to the worker who are more qualified .


 Loss of competent worker.
 Promotes frauds ,dissatisfaction among the employees.
 Lowers the morals of employees.
 Problems in maintaining discipline.
 Breached confidentiality.
Examples of nepotism in Philippines:

• The incumbent Mayor Omar Kalim of Lianga, Surigao, appointed his


legitimate son as Meat Inspector, but certified that the appointee
was not a relative by consanguinity or affinity. He was prosecuted
criminally and punished for falsification of public document (Art.
171, par. 4 or the RPC).
• Mayor Amelita Navarre of Snatiago City . Isabela is scheduled for
arraignmet on Sept. 23 , as ordered by the Sandiganbayan after the
Office of the Ombudsman found probable cause to indict her for
nepotism.
Navarre’s nepotism case arose from her alleged appointment
of her husband former Isabela board member Jose Naverro in the
Santiago Water District’s board in 2005
Nepotism at a workplace
 Nepotism in the workplace is a form of favoritism in which persons in positions of authority
appoint relatives or friends to different jobs. Although it is not wholly illegal in the private
sector, the act itself is unethical in the workplace.

How to Deal With Nepotism In A Workplace
 The eradication of nepotism starts with good leadership qualities and communication.
 Things that you can do to remove nepotism-
1. Create an Anti-nepotism policy that will be a part of your organization’s list of
company values.
2. Develop anonymous employee feedback systems where they can raise their concerns
if they witness nepotism.
3. Resort to a hiring policy that onboards individuals based on experience and
qualifications.
4. Focus on what the needs are for the organization and hire accordingly or promote
within the organization.
