LED vs. HPS LED lighting for horticulture is a hot topic these days. While HPS lighting
has a lower upfront cost, LED lighting is more efficient, provides consistent
Cost Overview light intensity over a longer period, emits less heat, and requires less
maintenance. Still, determining the lifetime cost of your lighting system
can be difficult, and HPS may seem appealing because of its apparently low
upfront cost.
The most important factor to consider when calculating your lighting costs
is total cost of ownership for your system. To calculate your total cost for
horticultural lighting we must look at:
1. Upfront Costs
2. Utility Incentives
3. Electricity Costs
6. Maintenance Costs
7. Labor Costs

Incentives In the spring of 2019, the Design Lights Consortium (DLC) along with
the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE),
developed a horticultural lighting standard to make it easier for utilities to
qualify horticultural lighting fixtures.
In our scenario, let’s use a conservative incentive amount and say a utility
will pay for 20% of your LED lighting upfront cost.
LumiGrow provides you with a utility savings package to engage your electrical utility. The
map above shows states where grow light rebates are available. Contact LumiGrow for more

Taylor’s growing facility requires a cooling system to maintain a steady 78˚F.
“How much money is saved on HVAC cooling costs by retrofitting to LED?,”
Taylor calculates a savings of $21,159 a year on cooling costs.

Factor The following graph compares photon flux maintenance curves over time for
different light sources.
“
The useful life of horticultural
lighting technologies is known
as the Q90; the operational
hours at which the light output
is 90% of the initial intensity or
less. After running for 10,000
hours, HPS intensities can
drop by 10%, whereas the LED
intensities are still running
close to 98% or more. Graph taken from multiple sources on lumen depreciation.
HPS production yields will erode rapidly from what the manufacturer
promised, just after the first day of use. The correlation of light intensity and
yield has been studied at universities and commercial operations; we’ll use
these findings to correlate lost revenue due to light loss factors.
In a study done by Justice and Gerovac (OutCo 2017), they explored average cannabis flower
yields relative to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR): ie. light intensity. Using this
fundamental research we can assume that a 0.73% light loss at 800 μmol·m-2·s-1 corresponds to
about 0.61% decrease in cannabis flower yield.
Let’s assume Taylor the Grower averages a conservative 40 grams per square foot. Let’s
assume it takes 60-days to harvest, allowing for 6 cycles in a year. The HPS output will then
drop by 3.65% and flower yield decrease by about 3.03%.
The table below shows the percentage of yield lost in your first year due to light loss factors over
each cycle.
Let’s assume Taylor were to sell his cannabis flower at a conservative $1,000 per pound. The
graph below shows the revenue lost over lighting hours. In the first year running HPS fixtures,
Taylor loses $77,997 in revenue!

The graph above shows revenue lost due to light loss factors. For the purpose of this analysis, light loss is only calculated
for the first year. Though, exponentially more revenue can be lost due to HPS Light Loss Factors.
“
The primary metric when comparing yields between lighting solutions is light
intensity. In this study, light intensity was made equal between the two lighting
systems. Other factors such a spectrum play a role in plant quality and yield
to some degree, but given all environmental variables are equally optimized
for and photosynthetic light is adequately balanced across blue, green, and red
wavebands, then yield factors due to light spectrum should be comparable. A
LumiGrow Hybrid (also known as “Broad”) spectrum was used for this study.
Many growers manage yield degradation by re-lamping often, but the effects of this Yield Loss
Factor cannot be completely avoided regardless of how much relamping is done. The Light Loss
Factors fluctuate too quickly to get maximum output out of your HPS lighting investment.
Taylor asks the big question, “How much revenue do I lose because of light depreciation factors?”.
Taylor takes a look at annual yield savings by switching to a LED solution.

Let’s examine a grower’s annual material costs to keep their HPS lighting
system running per manufacturer recommendations.
Maintenance Taylor decides to buy bulbs and reflectors from the supplier for $89 and $56
Costs a piece, respectively.
Taylor asks, “How much does it cost to relamp HPS fixtures and replace
“
reflectors?” Taylor spends $56,985 a year to maintain double-ended bulbs
and reflectors.
While the material costs to relamp and replace HPS reflectors are already
significant, the disruption of relamping a facility also means slower
LED lighting doesn’t require production schedules and increased labor costs.

Labor Costs: Bulbs and Reflectors
Screwing in a light bulb, as easy as it may sound, still takes staff and time.
Growers either schedule these maintenance tasks between crop turns,
or they get staff to heave plant material around to make room for ladders
and scaffolding. In either case, the disruption is an expense that cuts into
production.
“What’s the labor cost to maintain HPS light loss factors?” Taylor pays facility
employees about $20 per fixture to relamp, clean reflectors and cover them
for spraying. Taylor manages a tight ship so his professional team calculates
that it’ll cost about $7,860 a year to maintain an HPS lighting system.
Economically, Taylor mostly calls this a wash, but depending on how often
scheduled maintenance is required, or how disruptive it is will cause this
charge to add up.

Taylor finishes his calculations -- it looks like the simple payback and 5-year
total cost of ownership for an LED retrofit is a win-win with a great payback.
The simple payback of the total cost of ownership for Taylor’s LED solution is
only 1.6 years with the rebate (or 2.1 years without the rebate).
Our LED lighting solution started out as an investment two times the cost of
a HPS lighting system, but quickly saves us just over a million dollars in just
five years.
Lighting a 10,000 square foot indoor cannabis flower room with LEDs
actually saves us a whopping $1,159,708 to be exact.
