Descriptions and Operations

Suspension System
Adjustment of wheel angle Negative toe-in (toe-out)
Theoretical adjustment angles of kingpin ca-
ter angle and wheel camber angle shall be
determined by the vehicle manufacturer. Correct
the kingpin cater angle / wheel camber angle
with an adjuster to make it conform to the
specifications. However, before correcting the
kingpin cater angle / wheel camber angle, check
thoroughly whether suspension system is aged or
damaged, so as to avoid any change caused by
the adjustment of equipment.
Camber angle of wheel

Setting of vehicle toe-in:

It influences the wears of tire and rectilinear
direction stability of vehicle.
Wheel track

The camber angle of wheel is the inclination an-

gle in a vertical plane seen from front of vehicle,
which may be positive and has direct influences
on tire wears.
Camber angle of kingpin
The camber angle of kingpin is an imaginary line
in a certain angle formed by the ball joint center Item Description
and plumb line. The setting of kingpin camber

angle is unrelated to the wears of tire.
2 Rear wheel track

Terminology

Run-out steering force near to middle vertical position of

Run-out is a tendency where the vehicle on a road steering wheel”. During the diagnosis of steering
of some grade must be kept traveling on a straight troubles, understand the run-out and steering
line through frequent corrections of steering wheel. response.
Differences among the poor performances are
Flutter very important.
The flutter is often felt by a driver, because the
alternate flutters of steering wheel is caused by
bigger radial jumping of both side wheels.
The flutter is commonly produced or gradually
enhanced by contacts with pits or driving of vehicle
on irregular road surface at a speed of 64km/h.

Light shock
Light shock is sometimes confused with flutter,
which is caused by the unbalance of tires or
steering wheel. The drive may feel slight rotary
flutter of steering wheel.

Poor turning performance / steering delay

Poor turning performance and steering delay
are used to describe the poor automatic turning
performance of steering wheel after its one-cycle
turning or completing its steering operation.

Run-out / drift
Run-out / drift is a tractive feeling of hands on
steering wheel, which must overcome this force to
keep the stability of vehicle driving.
Drift / run-out is a response produced by the
vehicle when the hands of driver depart the
steering wheel.
● Run-out / drift related to vehicle driving will
cause continual drifts in linear driving of vehicle
when it drives on a flat road, which is required to
eliminate through continual steering inputs.
● External conditions acting on the vehicle, e.g.
wind force and crowned road surface, can
cause run-out / drift.

Poor steering response

Poor steering response is a slight or non-
enhanced steering effect felt on the steering wheel
when the wheels swing to left or right (within 20
rotation angle of steering wheel) around the center
or straight line of vehicle driving direction at slow
and tiny steering angle. It can be described as “little

Shock Absorber ● Lower swing arm ball joint: 2 ± 1.5 Nm.

1. Check the shock absorber for oil leakage and

bushing for damages.
2. Check if its resisting force fails during the
compression or stretching. In case of not
feeling the resisting force, prove the failure
of shock absorber and that it needs to be
replaced.

4. If the measured moment exceeds the above

specified limit, it’s required to replace the ball
joint.

Upper or Lower Swing Arm Ball Joint
1. Check the ball joint rubber sheath for damages
or oil leakage.
2. Turn the ball joint to left or right, and check
whether its operation is smooth. Check the
screw or ball joint cone for scratches. If any
problem happens to it, replace it.

3. After swinging the ball joint four to five

times, put on the nut cap, and measure its
retightening force.
