6 Driving the Crane

6.1 Checking Each Time before Driving the Crane

The following checks should be carried out each time before driv-
ing the crane, even if only short distances are to be driven.
How to check the capacities for all fuels is described in detail in
the Lubrication and Maintenance Instructions for the Crane
Chassis (Part 3).
-- Check the transport condition of the mobile crane (see Sec-
tion 6.2)
-- Check the engine oil level and top up if necessary (Z 31 202).
-- Check the hydraulic oil level. If the level in the hydraulic oil
tank is too low, the reason for the oil loss must be established
(Z 31 201).

Before the hydraulic oil has warmed up, do not run the engine at
speeds of over 1600 rpm.

-- Check the oil level in the transmission and top up if necessary.

-- Check the coolant level. If the coolant level is low, establish
the reason. Top up if necessary (Z 31 203).
-- Check the steering. Indicator lights (80) and (81) must go out
shortly after the engine is started.
Since the emergency steering pump is driven by the rolling
vehicle, indicator light (82) does not go out until the vehicle
starts moving.

Driving the crane with a defective steering system is a major

safety hazard. Faults must be rectified before the crane is
driven.

-- Perform a function test for the indicator lights with the ignition
switched on. Press the appropriate button to check whether
the built--in indicator light is working.

Driving the Crane 6

(Z 31 204)

Depending on whether the crane is to be driven on the road (Sec-

tion 6.2) or on the construction site in the transport condition
(Section 6.4.1) or in erect condition (Section 6.4.2) the ”indepen-
dent rear axle steering” (optional) and/or ”hydraulic suspension
locked” must be switched on or off as appropriate.
The power supply to the support pressure display is switched off
by actuating luminous switch (48).
Observe the relevant instructions given in each section.

Check the brake system. If a pressure of less than 7 bar is dis-

played on twin pressure gauge (59), the air tanks of the brake
system must be filled by running the engine at medium revs until
both pointers of the twin pressure gauge show 8 bar. Indicator
light (57) must be out. Indicator light (11) is on as long as the park-
ing brake (64) is engaged.

Check the hydraulic suspension; light--emitting diodes (115),

(116) and (117) must not come on (see Section 11).
The hydraulic suspension must not be locked during road travel.
The indicator light in switch (139) must not come on.

Check the tyre pressure. With 16.00 R 25 tyres, the pressure

should be 9 bar.
Tyre damage is inevitable if the tyre pressure is too low.

Check the lights and vehicle markings, i.e. light system and side
markings (reflectors).

The fuel level can be checked at fuel gauge (60) on the dash-
board.

Do not fill up the tank whilst the engine is running.

Steering wheel
(Z 31 205)

Adjust the steering wheel.

The steering wheel (2) can be adjusted for height and angle.
Before the steering wheel can be adjusted, the tommy screw (5)
must be released. After adjusting the steering wheel, secure
again by tightening the tommy screw.

6.2 Driving on Roads

(Z 31 206; Z 31 207)

All the control and monitoring elements required for driving the
crane are located in the driver’s cab of the crane chassis.

If the crane is fitted with independent rear axle steering (optional)

indicator lights (113) and (120) must not come on.

6.2.1 General
The transport condition of the mobile crane depends on the
road traffic regulations applicable in the country in which the
crane is to be operated.
A distinction must be made between the axle loads which are
technically possible and those which are permissible under
the local road traffic regulations.

According to road traffic licensing regulations the AC 665

has a maximum transport weight of 72 t.
The crane operator must therefore always drive in an ap-
propriate manner and with foresight, especially in difficult
conditions such as on sloping ground.

ing tyres, when driving on the road.

30 km/h 15 t 17.5 t 18.5 t
20 km/h 16 t 20 t 21 t

Axle loads of more than 12 t are not permitted when driving on

public roads in countries in which EEC regulations (or reduced
axle loads) apply. If the crane is driven on public roads with axle
loads over 12 t, the crane operator is responsible for any conse-
quences. All components and installations are designed and cal-
culated for axle loads of 12 t at maximum speed.
If this 12 t axle load is exceeded, the service life of axles, wheel
hubs, bearings, suspension cylinders and brakes will be re-
duced. In particular, wear on brake linings will be increased with
the subsequent risk of brakes overheating and fading.

The braking deceleration for the brakes (EEC: 50 %) is reduced

proportional to the increase in axle load or to the gross weight of
the crane.

In the interests of safety, the technically possible maximum axle

loads at the corresponding speed indicated in the left--hand col-
umn, should not be exceeded.

6.2.2 Transport Safety Locks

In order to put the crane into the transport position, the following
transport safety locks must first be engaged:
-- (Z 31 208)
When driving with the hook block reeved, it must be fastened
to the front coupling ring of the crane chassis.
-- (Z 31 210)
When driving without the hook block, the hoist rope is fas-
tened to the front coupling ring of the crane chassis via the
rope sockets.
-- (Z 31 209)
The main boom must be bolted to the travel rest on the chas-
sis. The pins must be inserted and guarded.
-- Apply the mechanical superstructure locking device (31) in
the superstructure cab. (see Sect. 4 of the Operating Instruc-
tions for the Superstructure)
-- The cab support on the superstructure must be put into the
transport position using lever (33).
(see Sect. 4 of the Operating Instructions for the Superstruc-
ture)

The transport safety locks are released in the reverse order.

6.2.3 Driving over Hill Summits

When driving over hill summits, ensure that all wheels of the
crane remain on the ground.
The crane operator shall bear sole responsibility if, when an axle
lifts off the ground, the crane chassis is damaged due to the maxi-
mum suspension travel being exceeded or the suspension being
locked and the max. permissible axle load being exceeded.

When driving over hill summits it is prohibited to:

-- lock the suspension
-- exceed an axle load of 14 t
as components MAY BREAK otherwise.

However, should an axle lift off the ground, proceed as follows:

1. Stop the crane in a straight line and engage the longitudinal

differential lock. Actuate switch (104) to do this. Indicator light
(99) comes on.

2. Drive over the summit of the hill at walking pace (max.

5 km/h).

Whilst driving over the summit:

-- Avoid turning the steering
-- Observe the suspension pressure continually.
If the pressure rises to 270 bar in one of the three suspen-
sion circuits, the AXLES MAY BREAK.
If a pressure of 300 bar is reached, the summit must not
be driven over.
Reverse carefully.

3. After driving over the summit, stop the crane immediately and
disengage the longitudinal differential lock. Actuate switch
(104) again for this purpose. Indicator light (99) goes out.

6.2.4 Driving the Crane on Roads with Axle Loads up to a

Maximum of 12 t
(Z 31 206; Z 31 207)

The crane with main boom, three--sheaved hook block, hoist 1

and spare wheel at the rear of the crane chassis.

The counterweights, the Superlift, hoist 2 and the main boom ex-
tension must be transported separately.

Check the following before driving the crane on the road:

-- All telescopic sections on the main boom must be pin locked.
-- Apply all safety locks as described in Section 6.2.1.
-- The hydraulic suspension of the chassis must not be locked
(see Section 11).
-- Independent rear axle steering (optional) must be switched
off (see Section 9).
-- A new chart must be inserted in the tachograph in the driver’s
cab of the crane chassis.
-- The power supply to the support pressure display is switched
off by actuating luminous switch (48).

In this transport condition the AC 665 has a maximum transport

weight of approx. 72 t with axle loads of:
Axle 1 and 2 = 11.9 t,
Axle 3 to 6 = 11.8 t .
The maximum driving speed is 70 km/h.

Driving the Crane 6

6.2.5 Driving the Crane on Roads with Axle Loads Over 12 t

(Z 31 215)

”Technical driveability” is only permitted on the construc-

tion site and on private roads.
All components and systems are designed and calculated
for a 12 t axle load and a total weight of 72 t.

With the technically permissible transport condition (see national

regulations) the following equipment, in addition to the configura-
tion described in 6.2.4, can also be driven with:
-- main boom extension
-- Superlift with bracing rods
-- counterweight base plate (set down on the chassis)
-- hoist 2 or replacement counterweight
-- additional counterweight section (on the superstructure)

The main boom extension remains folded on the side of the main
boom (fitting the main boom extension: see the Operating
Instructions for the Superstructure, Part 1, Sect. 18).

The Superlift remains in the transport position set down on the

main boom.

The counterweight base plate is set down on the crane chassis.

(see Operating Instructions for the Superstructure, Sect. 9).

Hoist 2 or replacement counterweight on the superstructure pin

locked and guarded.

The additional counterweight section stays pin locked and

guarded on the superstructure.

This travelling condition does not correspond to the road traffic

licensing regulations or the EEC rules. Driving is therefore only
permitted on private roads and areas, which have appropriate
load bearing capacity and are sufficiently level (e.g. no potholes).

All components are designed for a 12 t axle load. Therefore in

particular brakes, steering, tyres, axles, and suspension are sub-
ject to increased wear. This leads to a considerable reduction
in service life.

The stopping distance increases visibly and there is a danger of

fading.

665--2060_en 17/47
6

Z 31 257

18/47 665--2060_en
Driving the Crane 6

(Z 31 257)

”Technical Driveability” with axle loads over 12 t is only for

exceptional circumstances.
This will put strain on the whole chassis, in particular steer-
ing, wheels and tyres, axles and axle suspension as well as
the suspension system, at the expense of the service life.
If the crane is driven repeatedly over a longer period of time
with axle loads over 12 t, the above components (steering,
wheels, tyres, axles, axle suspension and suspension sys-
tem) must be checked every 3 months for damage and wear.
This is especially the case when adjusting the steering ge-
ometry.
When the defect is discovered it must be dealt with straight
away in order to prevent safety risks, further wear or irrepa-
rable damage to the component.
The examination and possible adjustment of the steering ge-
ometry or the repair of other components affecting safety,
may only be carried out by Mannesmann Demag mobile
cranes service, or a corresponding specialist workshop.

The crane must not be steered when it is at a stop or when on

very uneven ground.
The independent rear axle steering must not be engaged.
The power supply for the support pressure indicator is switched
off by pressing luminous switch (48).
When driving, note the pressures displayed for the suspension
circuits. They should be even and must not exceed 270 bar.
Driving in this travelling condition is only permitted for short
stretches.

With axle loads over 14 t the maximum permissible speed

see chart on page 9.

Transport condition and axle loads see chart on page 21 .

When driving with the counterweight base plate set down on

the chassis and the main boom extension in the transport
position on the main boom, the stay bar (1) of the counter-
weight base plate must be folded over in the transport posi-
tion.

6.4 Driving on the Construction Site

The ground must be suitable for the tyres, i.e. flat and level
ground, suitable for 10 bar ground pressure.

The ground must be able to support the weight of each wheel

load (max. 27 t) as well as the total weight of the crane.

6.4.1 Driving in Transport Mode

Different regulations are applicable when driving with inde-

pendent rear axle steering engaged. See Section 9.3.

The differential lock may be engaged for brief periods only in or-
der to overcome obstacles when driving in a straight line.
Driving speeds in excess of 5 km/h generally overload the tyres
and drive, when the differential lock is engaged.
The differential lock must be disengaged immediately once the
obstacle has been overcome.

The crane must be stationary when switching the differential

lock on and off.

Before driving, always check the tyre pressures. With standard

tyres 16.00 R 25, the tyre pressure on each wheel must be 9 bar.

The hydraulic suspension on the crane chassis must not be

locked (see operating instructions for the crane chassis, Section
11) and must be set level.

When driving over hill summits or ramps, the same rules ap-
ply as for ”Driving over hill summits” on the road.
Always observe the notes and method of proceeding given
in Section 6.2.3 .

6.4.2 Driving in Erect Mode

The crane may only be driven with the main boom erect and
possibly equipment attached when it is unladen.

Driving with load and / or the independent rear axle steering

engaged is PROHIBITED

Please observe the following when driving without load:

-- The gradient of the path of travel must not exceed the follow-
ing values:
∗ 2 % in the direction of travel
∗ 1 % laterally (without additional equipment)
∗ 0.5 % laterally (with additional equipment)
-- Extend the outrigger struts and hold the supports just above
the ground.

Make sure that the outrigger struts are pin locked correctly

-- The hydraulic suspension on the crane chassis must be

locked (see Sect. 11).
-- Driving speed must not exceed walking speed (max. 5 km/h).
-- Main boom to the rear -- apply the mechanical superstructure
locking device in the superstructure cab.
(Z 31 286; Z 31 287)
-- Apply the slew gear brake.
-- Independent rear axle steering must be switched off.
-- Care should be taken if there is a side wind, particularly if the
wind is acting in the same direction as a lateral ground gradi-
ent.
-- Constantly monitor the suspension pressure on pressure
gauges (5) to (10) in the driver’s cab.

If the pressure in one of the three suspension circuits in-

creases to a level of 300 bar or more, immediately stop the
crane and extend the outrigger cylinders until the pressure
is taken off the wheels.
Bring the crane into a level position by re--adjustment of the
hydraulic suspension or correction of the boom position.
If the crane is driven further it may OVERTURN or the AXLES
MAY BREAK!

When changing the hook block or driving with the main boom ex-
tension folded on the main boom, a balanced axle load can again
be achieved by slight adjustment of the main boom (or of the fly
jib when driving with the luffing fly jib).

The axle load and the suspension pressure, when lowering the
crane from the outriggers on to the wheels, can be monitored on
the manometers.
Here a pressure of 270 bar (corresponding to 28 t axle load) must
not be exceeded.

6.5 Fitting and Removing the Spare Wheel

A hoist arrangment (Z 27 446; optional equipment) is located for
fitting and removing the spare wheel.

To remove the spare wheel, proceed as follows:

(Z 26 508)
-- Unwind the rope from the hoist arrangement,
-- insert the deflection device with fitted sheave (1) into the ope-
ning of the spare wheel holding device,
-- put the rope round the spare wheel,
-- pull the rope taut using the hoist arrangment and remove the
bolt on the holding device (Z 27 447),
-- unreel the rope from the hoist arrangment and set the spare
wheel down on the ground.

The spare wheel is fitted analogously in the reverse order.

Before slewing the superstructure or driving the crane, the

deflection device with fitted sheave (1) must be pinned on
the hoist arrangement in the transport position, as despicted
in diagram (Z 27 446).
The hoist rope must be reeled onto the sheave and secured
(Z 27 446).
The spare wheel is to be bolted firmly onto the holding devi-
ce.
