8 Slewing the Superstructure

8.1 Information on Slewing

Risk of crushing! Risk of collision!

All movements must be carried out at an appropriate

speed (avoiding excessive acceleration) in order to avoid
the load or hook block swinging out and the risk of
crushing or collisions when the movement is switched
off.
-- Slewing the superstructure in the overload range
(load limit device has shut down) is prohibited.
-- The superstructure may only be slewed when
the crane is supported on outriggers.
-- Never slew over persons.
-- Do not jump from the moving crane.
-- If indicator light (61) lights up and buzzer (62) sounds
when a slewing movement is carried out using control
lever (1) (Z 42 771), there is a risk of collisons and ac-
cidents when the superstructure is rotated.
SLEWING PROHIBITED !
* When counterweight cylinders (15) are fully re-
tracted, the sensors “S61.1” on the left--hand side
and “S61.2” on the right--hand side are activated. If
the cylinders are not fully retracted, as a result of a
leak or incorrect operation, these sensors are no
longer activated (Z 44 026) and set off the indicator
light (61) and alarm transmitter (62).
* If the mechanical superstructure locking device (5)
is extended and is outside the locking strip (Z 40
401), the sensor “S45” is activated and sets off indi-
cator light (61) and alarm transmitter (62).
* If the crane operator’s cab is not fully raised, the
sensor (”S68”, Z 44 025) is not activated and sets off
indicator light (61) and alarm transmitter (62).

If the warning is given before the slewing procedure

is started, the crane operator’s cab must be fully
raised. If the warning is only given when the slewing
procedure is started, the counterweight cylinders or the
mechanical superstructure locking device must be fully
retracted.

Slewing the Superstructure 8

-- Before starting a slewing movement, the crane opera-

tor must make sure that no--one is on the crane chas-
sis or in the slewing range of the superstructure. For
safety reasons, the horn should be sounded as well.--
In relation to the counterweight which is fitted, slewing
of the superstructure is only permitted in the range of
reach for which lifting capacity values are specified in
the tables.
-- After supporting the crane on outriggers and fitting
the counterweight, the current support area must be
checked before the superstructure is slewed.
* Maximum outrigger support area “12.2 x 12 m”
There is a load table which only permits crane opera-
tion at a superstructure position of 180°, i.e. super-
structure to the rear. In this case, a central support
and a HD attachment is required; the mechanical su-
perstructure locking device must be applied. With
the exception of this special case, at an outrigger
support area of “12.2 x 12 m” slewing of the super-
structure is permitted at any c’weight combination.
* Minimum outrigger support area “9.02
x 8.45 m”
With the outrigger support area ”9.02 x 8.45 m” slew-
ing of the superstructure is only permitted when a
counterweight of maximum 100 t is fitted.
If a counterweight which is heavier than 100 t is
fitted, the superstructure may not be slewed.
RISK OF TIPPING ! (Z 40 402)
-- Before commencing crane operation, after the outriggers
have been extended, the lock of the slew gear brake is to be
released using switch (117) and the mechanical superstruc-
ture locking device with switch (118) (Z 46 728).
-- Before leaving the crane operator’s cab, during pauses in
work and at the end of the working session, the slew gear
brake must be applied.
-- To avoid the possibility of oblique pull, with the slew gear park-
ing brake released and before the load is raised, the slew gear
must be switched to ”free movement” by pressing foot switch
(10) (Z 40 404).

8.2 Slewing Procedure

The superstructure may only be slewed when the crane op-

erator’s cab has been folded into the transport position or
when the crane operator’s cab is in the operating position.
When the carrier arm is swung out and the cab is folded out,
there is a risk of collision with the counterweight support on
the crane chassis and with the silencer manifold.
SLEWING PROHIBITED !

8.2.1 Slewing and Braking

To slew the superstructure, proceed as follows (Z 46 729):

1. With the engine running, press switch (118) on the dashboard

to release the mechanical superstructure locking device.
When released, the light in the switch comes on.

2. By pressing switch (117) in the instrument panel release the

slew gear parking brake. When released, the indicator light
in the switch lights up.

3. Using luminous switch (115) select slew gear operation. The

indicator light integrated in the switch may not light up.

When the indicator light in the luminous switch (115) lights up,
control lever (1) is used to control the auxiliary reeving winch.

4. Press button (4.1) or (4.2) and start the slewing movement

by carefully actuating control lever (1).
-- Move lever (1) to the left to position ”C” (Z 40 406)
slew left (Z 40 407).
-- Move lever (1) to the right to position ”D” (Z 40 406)
slew right (Z 40 407).

-- By actuating control lever (1), the slew gear brake is activated

before the slewing movement is started.
-- To prevent the unintentional activation of crane movements,
both levers are fitted with an additional button (button “4.1” in
control lever “1”, button “4.2” in control lever “2”, “dead man’s
switch”). A crane movement can only be carried out as long
as one of these buttons is pressed.

The lever (1) may not be switched to the opposite direction

in one movement, it must first be returned to the ”O” posi-
tion. Slew the superstructure in the opposite direction only
when the superstructure has come to a standstill.

-- If indicator light (61) lights up and alarm transmitter

(62) sounds when the slewing movement is started,
the movement must be stopped immediately.
RISK OF ACCIDENTS !
The alarm is activated if:
* the counterweight lift cylinders are not fully re-
tracted.
* the mechanical superstructure locking device is ex-
tended, but is outside the locking strip
* the crane operator’s cab is not fully raised.

-- If the superstructure engine is switched off or stalls

during the slewing procedure, the pin of the mechani-
cal superstructure locking device is extended. The
lamp in the switch (118) goes out.
There is a risk of collision with the frame of the crane
chassis. R I S K O F A C C I D E N T S !
In this case, brake the superstructure, start the engine
again and check to make sure that the pin is retracted
again. The indicator light in the switch (118) must light
up.

5. To brake the superstructure, slowly return the control lever

(1) to the ”Off” position. The superstructure is braked until it
comes to a standstill (Z 46 730).

Handle the slew gear and slew brake with care! Select
low slewing speeds! Brake carefully!
This especially applies for operation of the crane with the
main boom extension / fly jib or special local site condi-
tions.

-- When the slew gear brake is released, the superstructure

can slew of its own accord as a result of wind forces.
Maintain a safe distance from buildings. If the crane is not
supported on outriggers, the slew gear brake must be
locked.
-- Before leaving the crane operator’s cab, the slew gear
brake must be locked/applied. Press switch (117). The in-
dicator light in the switch (117) must not light up
(Z 46 730).

8.2.2 Precision Control of the Slew Gear (Setpoint

Adjustment)
(Z 40 409)

By pressing knob (28) the pilot control behaviour of the slew gear
can be precisely adjusted.

8.2.3 Switching Off the Slew Gear

When a boom angle of 15° has been reached when lowering the
main boom, the sensor “S92.1” shuts down the crane movements
“lower luffing gear” and “rotate superstructure” (Z 40 410). By
pressing the button (113) the slew gear brake can be bridged. Re-
lease is confirmed by the lamp in the button lighting up (Z 46 731).

Rotation of the superstructure over the area of the outriggers

is prohibited at a main boom angle below 15°; the main boom
would collide with the outrigger struts.

When the superstructure is in the 0° or 180° position and the me-

chanical superstructure locking device is applied, “lower luffing
gear” is not shut down at a main boom angle of 15°. In this case,
the sensor “S44.2” is activated, the main boom can be lowered
completely (Z 40 412).

When the superstructure is in the 180° position and the cylin-

der support (optional Z 46 721) is fitted on the crane chassis,
the main boom may not be fully lowered. Risk of damage !
