Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet
to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Tornadoes are one of the most challenging weather events for expert forecasters to
predict and warn communities against. Even now, human eyes remain our primary tool
for confirming them, as normal weather radars cannot reliably detect these violent
rotating winds.
But Roger Waxler of the University of Mississippi’s National Centre for Physical
Acoustics in the US believes tornadoes may be more trackable from a distance by
listening to them. Waxler’s team, which previously developed a microphone for picking
up infrasound, or sound below the range of human hearing, presented evidence that
tornadoes also emit infrasonic signals that can be heard more than 50 miles away.
More work is needed to determine whether tornadoes have their own unique sonic
signature. If that turns out to be the case, it’s possible infrasound microphones could
one day augment current tornado warning systems, helping us detect tornadoes more
quickly and accurately than before and giving communities precious extra minutes to
prepare. “We’re hoping we could save more lives,” he said.
While the idea and the evidence presented are very promising, there’s still a lot of work
to be done. According to Paul Markowski, a meteorology professor at who is
collaborating with Waxler’s group, there appear to be multiple sources of infrasound
coming from storms. “It seems that some tornadoes do emit infrasound, but that non-
tornadic storms also emit infrasound.” To be useful as a real-time tornado tracking tool,
Waxler’s detection system needs to be able to distinguish tornadic infrasound from all
the rest.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet

No matter how emotionally stable we are, there are always times when we feel like
there are too many things to handle. And when we feel overwhelmed, we may react in
ways that do not help the situation at all or even make it much worse. Therefore, it is
important to make sure that you are not oblivious to these patterns and that you know
what to do when they occur.

ĐỀ THI THỬ

People often have great ideas about things that would help them like seeing a
therapist or taking a vacation. However, they dismiss them because they think they’re
too busy or that it’s not the best time. When you have good ideas but don’t act on
them, it can lead to a sense of powerlessness or incompetence. Plus, when you don’t act,
you miss out on the potential gains from trying your ideas. Instead of trying to wait until
everything is perfect, choose the best option that’s easily available to you now. Perhaps
you don’t have time to research the best therapists, but you do have time to pick
someone who meets some of your criteria and try a couple of sessions with them.
Feeling overwhelmed is a very natural emotional response. However, sometimes we
get self-critical about this. We think: “I shouldn’t feel overwhelmed by this. It’s not that
hard.” When you’re self-critical, you become more likely to procrastinate, because not
only does this intensify the feelings of overwhelm that already exists, but also evokes
shame or anxiety about having those feelings. Therefore, it is crucial to practice self-
compassion, which basically means taking a more constructive rather than harsh
perspective towards your efforts and mental state, to motivate yourself and help you
focus on overcoming challenges.
Denying sources of support is also a problem. Feeling overwhelmed reduces your
emotional energy, which can lead to changes in your behaviour. Maybe you often give
your child long hugs when they come to you, but when overwhelmed you only give
them a quick squeeze. In this case, not only are you missing a chance to restore your
mental energy levels, but they may also notice the differences and feel hurt. To avoid
this, identify ways to have fun with your loved ones even when you’ve got limited
emotional energy. For instance, I like to draw or build things with LEGO blocks with my
5-yeat-old during breaks, as they are simple things that we both enjoy. Remember:
never refuse an opportunity to fill your emotional cup.
