Lesson Plan in Mathematics Grade 9

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
- illustrates quadratic equations.
- distinguish a quadratic equation from other types of equations in one variable .
II. Subject- Matter:
Topic: Quadratic Equations In One Variable
Lesson 1: Introduction to Quadratic Equations
Materials: Charts, Books
References: CG Code: M9AL -Ia –1, page 231
Teaching Guide: Module 1. Lesson 1, pages 14-17
Learning Materials: Mathematics Learner’s Material, pages 11-14
Value Integration: Realize the importance of the topic in real life
III. Procedure
1. Drill (Flashcards)
Perform the indicated operations.
a. 14- (-1) b. 13b + (-3b) 3. 4x(x2) 4. 5xy – (-3xy) 5. 2ab + ab
2. Review
What is a linear equation?
Ask the students answer activity 1, page 11 (selected numbers).
3. Motivation
Was there any point in your life when you asked yourself about the different real life quantities,
such as costs of goods or services, incomes, profits, speed, area, and many others? Have you ever
realized that these quantities can be mathematically represented to come up with practical decisions?
4. Development of the Lesson
A. ACTIVITY
- Let the students answer Activity 2: Another Kind of Equation! in groups of 3.
B. ANALYSIS (Process Questions)
Ask volunteers to share their answers to the class.
Questions
1. Which of the given equations are linear?
2. How do you describe linear equations?
3. Which of the given equations are not linear? Why? How are these equations different from those
which are linear? What common characteristics do these equations have?
C. ABSTRACTION
What is a quadratic equation? How are quadratic equations different from other equations?
D. APPLICATION
Ask the students to answer Activity 4: Quadratic or Not Quadratic, numbers 1to 10, page 14.
IV. Assessment
Identify which of the following equations are quadratic or not.
1. 2m2 – 72 = 0 3. x2 – 2 = 0 5. 5x2 – 2x -1= 0
2. x – y +2 = 0 4. X3 – 2 = 0
V. Assignment
Let the students to answer Activity 5, numbers 1to 5, pages 14-15.
