3. What is assessment?
Is a general item, which consists of methods and techniques used to gather information
about student ability, knowledge, understanding and motivation. Is also accepted as one
of the crucial parts of teaching, in other words, teachers can evaluate the level of skills or
knowledge of students.
4. What is the purpose of assessing students?
To asses students progress in proficiency, to guide and improve students performance, to
evaluate and inform instruction and program design, to support learning.
5. Which are the elements of effective assessment? Explain them briefly.
Authenticity: using this principle in a test uses the test for performing an assignment in a
real life situation.
Reliability: it has to be consistent and dependable, for instance, if a teacher gives the same
test to the same student or matched students on two different occasions, the test has to
show the same results.
Validity: is perceived when the assessment method is consisted with the material and
curriculum being taught and if the results of the assessment are accurate. It measures
what it is supposed to measure and would the instrument give the same results if it is
repeated.
Washback effect: this principle is defined as the effect of testing on a teaching and
learning a foreign language. It may denote both the promotion and self-consciousness of
language learning.
