1. Hardware
2. Software
3. Databases
4. Networks
5. Procedures
6. Telecommunications
7. Internet
8. People
Types of Data

1. Alphanumeric Data
2. Image Data
3. Audio Data
4. Video Data

III. Complete the table by writing the functions of the following databases models.

Database Models Functions

a. Hierarchical Model In hierarchical model, data is organized into tree-
like structure with one-to-many relationship
between two different types of data.
b. Network Model In this model data is organized more like a graph,
and are allowed to have more than one parent
node.
c. Relational Model In this model, data is organized in two-dimensional
tables and the relationship is maintained by
storing a common field.
d. Entity Relationship Model In this database model, relationships are created
by dividing object of interest into entity and its
characteristics into attributes.
e. Object-oriented Model In this database model, the focus is on capturing
the structure and behavior of information systems
into small modules that combines both data and
process.

IV. Enumerate and explain the following processes.

1. Data Warehousing Delivery Process

Answer: Transforming the data into a form suitable for analysis, extracting and loading data from
different source systems. Generating aggregations from predefined definitions within the data
warehouse. Backing up, restoring, and archiving the data.

2. Data Warehousing System Process

Answer: Data extraction takes data from the source systems. Data load takes the extracted data
and loads it into the data warehouse. Data needs to be in a consistent state when it is extracted,
the data warehouse should represent a single, consistent version of the information to the user.
MIDTERM EXAMINATION IN INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

Name: SAGUSAY, RODELYN C. Course/Year/Section: BSCS 2A

I. Briefly answer the following. (5pts each)

1. Differentiate data from information.

Answer: Information is a processed, organized data presented in a given context and is useful to
humans. Data is an individual unit that contains raw materials which does not carry any specific
meaning. Information is a group of data that collectively carry a logical meaning.

2. Identify and describe the characteristics and value of information.

Answer: There are five characteristics of high quality information are accuracy, completeness,
consistency, uniqueness, and timeliness. Information needs to be of high quality to be useful
and accurate. The information that is input into a data base is presumed to be perfect as well as
accurate.

3. Discuss what Computer-based Information System is.

Answer: Computer-based information systems in education are structured systems that rely on
computer hardware and software technology to collect, process, store and distribute didactical
resources. Information system is employed to support decision making and control in an
organization.

4. Identify the purpose of information management.

Answer: Design, develop, manage, and use information with insight and innovation. Support
decision making and create value for individuals, organizations, communities, and societies.

5. Discuss what Data Management is.

Answer: A data management is an administrative process that includes acquiring, validating,
storing, protecting, and processing required data to ensure the accessibility, reliability, and
timeliness of the data for its users.

6. Discuss the importance of Database Management System in an organization.

Answer: The use of this system increases efficiency of business operations and reduces overall
costs. Database management systems are important in businesses and organizations because
they provide highly efficient method for handling multiple types of data.
7. Identify what are the functions of Data Warehousing.
Answer: Transforming data into a form suitable for analysis. Monitoring query profiles and
determining appropriate aggregations to maintain system performance. Extracting and loading
data from different source of systems. Generating aggregations from predefined definitions
within the data warehouse.
8. Identify and explain the different types of Data Warehousing.
Answer: Three main types of data warehouses are Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW),
Operational Data Store, and Data Mart. General state of a data warehouse are Offline
Operational Database, Offline Data Warehouse, Real time Data Warehouse and Integrated Data
Warehouse.
9. Differentiate Data Warehousing from Operational Database.
Answer: Difference between this two is that Operational Database are used to manage dynamic
data in real-time. Data warehouse serve users or knowledge workers in the purpose of data
analysis and decision making.
10. Identify the three tiers of the data warehouse architecture and identify its functions.
Answer:
 Bottom Tier of the architecture is the data warehouse database server.
 Middle Tier, in this we have the OLAP Server that can be implemented in either of the
following ways. Relational OLAP (ROLAP) which is an extended relational database
management system. Multidimensional OLAP (MOLAP) model, which directly
implements the multidimensional data and operations.
 Top Tier is the front-end client layer. This layer holds the query tools and reporting
tools, analysis tools and data mining tools.
