CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Sleep is a very important human condition that is essential to have energy and to have

stable health. Having enough sleep lowers risk for serious health problems, like diabetes, heart

disease, high blood pressure, heart attack, heart failure, and stroke. Sleep is also necessary to

survive. With adequate sleep, our immune system gets stronger making us less vulnerable from

diseases and sickness. However, in today’s generation, there are many people lacking sleep

because of their jobs and their school works especially students, since their school works are

done virtually in this day of age.

Sleep deprivation is the cause of lack of sleep in humans. Sleep deprivation is a state

caused by inadequate quantity or quality sleep. Sleep deprivation has been related to impaired

attention and cognition, in addition to the effects of sleep on memory consolidation. Sleep

deprivation also negatively affects your mental abilities and emotional state. You may feel more

impatient or prone to mood swings. Other conditions such as stress and depression can also

cause excessive daytime sleepiness. Getting too tired also strikes the body’s natural sleep

hormone, which releases melatonin. This hormone helps teens fall asleep and wake up later in

the morning. Lack of sleep not only increases weariness and sleepiness, but also impairs

cognitive performance, according to well-controlled sleep deprivation research. Interruptions to

sleep can be irritating, but a consistent lack of quality sleep can have a negative impact on a

person's capacity to operate on a day-to-day basis, their quality of life, and their health.
Students nowadays are among the most sleep-deprived people in the world. They exhibit

some of the most egregious sleep hygiene practices in comparison to other adult groups.

Decreasing the sleeping time because of school works, getting late bedtimes during weekdays

and weekends and increase the sleepiness on daytime is negatively associated with academic

performance of the students. Students taking part time jobs encounter difficulty of time

management in their studies.

The purpose of this study is to know “The Effects of Sleep Deprivation on the Online

Class Performance of Grade 11 Students of St. Adelaide School Philippines S.Y 2021-2022”.

This study aims to assess the relationship of sleep deprivation with the online class performance

of the students. We, the researchers assess the profile of the respondents such as name, gender,

age and address of a student. We, the researchers aim to provide effects and information about

the relation of sleep deprivation and online class performance of a student.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

effects, and solutions in order to avoid the habit. This is because sleep deprivation is prevalent

among all people especially Senior High School students.

CHAPTER 2

INTRODUCTION

This chapter introduces the information about our topic in RRL and RRS. It conveys the

importance and facts about sleep deprivation to expand the researcher’s knowledge about the

topic. Therefore, it helps many people to know more about this topic for themselves and there

will be tendency to influence everyone to research about being sleep deprived.

RESEARCH OF RELATED LITERATURE

[FOREIGN]

Sleep is a very important major aspect in our daily lives: however, fewer people are

getting enough/good sleep each night and more are slowly becoming sleep deprived. Sleep

deprivation is defined as a condition that occurs when an individual does not getting enough

sleep each night (What Are Sleep Deprivation, 2021). There’s a tremendous quantity of

research being conducted and performed as a way to determine how to overcome/surpass sleep

deprivation, but in order to overcome/surpass any issue, it is important to know first who is at

risk of being suffered from it.

More specifically, individuals who have limited time for sleep, such as students, those

who have schedule that conflict with circadian rhythms such as; shift workers, first respondents

and individuals who travel for work. Also, those people who work a lot of hours just like either

at one or more jobs can also be at risk of suffering from being sleep deprived. Other individual

that must be included would be are those lifestyle choices that aren’t allow them to have an
adequate quantity and/ quality sleep such as; individuals who abuse alcohol and/ drugs, those

individuals who take medication so that they can stay awake, or those individuals who don’t

place adequate sleep high on their priority list. Individuals who suffer from various medical

conditions such as heart failure, heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke,

transit ischemic attack (mini stroke), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and depression can

all suffer from sleep deprivation as well (Who is at Risk, 2014).

“Lack of sleep should no longer be considered a traditional adolescent rite of passage because it

can have serious consequences” (McCann, 2008). Students should not make it a habit to stay

awake late at night. Porpova (2013) claims that chronic sleep deprivation in adolescents reduces

the brain’s capacity to learn new information and can lead to emotional issues like depression

and aggression. Also, an article of Hackethal (2013) has shown that sleep deprivation might

affect the frontal lobes of the brain which controls decision-making functions. Even the teenagers

and also children are still need to get adequate sleep to avoid suffering of the consequences of

sleep deprivation.

Not only can sleep deprivation affect the performance of an individual, but it can also

affect one’s health and mood. Brown University published an article on sleep stating that, “lack

of sleep, can affect your mental health by resulting tension, irritability, depression, confusion,

and generally lower life satisfaction.” The article also elucidates that lack of quantity and/ quality

sleep is not the sole reasoning for this, but sleeping in late on weekends could also be a factor to

these mood changes.

Most people don’t get enough sleep. A nation where people stay up all night to study,

work, or do things just for fun. Nevertheless, going without adequate sleep carries with it both

short- and long-term consequences.

In the short term, a lack of adequate sleep can affect judgment, mood, ability to learn and

retain information, and may increase the risk of serious accidents and injury. In the long term,

chronic sleep deprivation may lead to a host of health problems including obesity, diabetes,

cardiovascular disease, and even early mortality.

[LOCAL]

Sleep is an inseparable component of human health and life, and it is important for

growth, practice, and physical and mental health. It has an impact on individual learning

capacity, academic performance, and neural-behavioural functions. Reduced overnight sleep or

altered sleep patterns have been linked to severe drowsiness and academic failure. In addition to

the effects of sleep on memory consolidation, sleep deprivation has been linked to poor attention

and cognition. Sleep deprivation studies have shown that not only does a lack of sleep increase

fatigue and sleepiness, but it also reduces cognitive performance.

Most people are aware of how sleep can affect mood, causing irritability and exaggerated

emotional responses. Teens who are adjusting to more independence, responsibility, and new

social relationships may face even more severe consequences over time. Healthy sleep also

helps the body remain healthy and stave off diseases. A healthy diet and positive lifestyle habits

can help ensure an adequate amount of sleep each night-but for some, chronic lack of sleep may

be the first sign of a sleep disorder.

According to the 2016 Healthy Living index Survey, Filipinos have one of the highest

rates of sleep deprivation in Asia; 48% of Filipinos do not get enough sleep while 32% said they

sleep for less than six hours. Sleep deprivation is a broad phrase that refers to a state

characterized by insufficient sleep quantity or quality, as well as involuntary or involuntary

insomnia and sleep disorders affecting the circadian rhythm. A drowsy tired person is more

prone to accidents, has impaired judgment, and is more likely to make mistakes and poor

judgments. Staying awake for 24 hours leads to reduced hand-to-eye coordination that is similar

to having a blood alcohol content of 0.1. This makes sleep deprivation contributory to road

accidents and work injuries. Not enough sleep or disruptions to the sleep-wake cycle (such as

those that may occur with shift work or travelling to a different time zone) cause the

physiological state known as fatigue. Youngsters are affected differently than adults by sleep

deprivation; drowsy children prefer to 'frev up' rather than slow down.

St. Luke's launches first ever Comprehensive Insomnia Management Program, In the

Philippines, more than 10 million adults are said to suffer from insomnia and this is considered

to have one of the highest rates of sleep deprivation in the world. Insomnia is defined as the

inability to fall asleep or to stay asleep, even when given a chance to do so. It is associated with

fatigue and irritability “Among all the sleep disorders, insomnia is the most common. Yet none

of the hospitals have a specific service targeting insomnia,” (Dr. Jimmy V. Chang, 2014).The

program is designed to specifically address concerns of patients suffering from insomnia

especially the senior high school students. It is composed of specialists, such as sleep

psychiatrists, neurologists, psychologists, and sleep doctors. In line with this, the Center recently

acquired a portable Sleep Study machine that is effective in diagnosing uncomplicated

Obstructive Sleep Apnea. The machine, which has four cardiorespiratory signals or polygraphs,

works to monitor and record patient’s breathing, oxygenation, and pulse rate. The portable Sleep

Study machine is ideal for Wellness patients with signs and symptoms of Obstructive Sleep

Apnea. Patients can be diagnosed sooner and hence, treatment delay can be avoided.

(Extrapolated Statistics of Health Grades Inc & Study published, 2018).

Moreover, Filipino students were deprived in this new normal because they are

studying and doing their best to finish their school works before deadline. However, they

must change their schedule that they must do their tasks during day time instead night so

their sleeping schedule will be long for 8 hours or more than that. In the Philippines, the

environment of the person is having hard time to sleep which is its bedroom is not

comfortable and the temperature is hot. There are tips to have a better night’s sleep.

RESEARCH OF RELATED STUDIES

[FOREIGN]
Today, prolonged wakefulness is a widespread phenomenon. Nevertheless, in the field of

sleep and wakefulness, several unanswered questions remain. Prolonged wakefulness can be due

to acute total sleep deprivation (SD) or to chronic partial sleep restriction. Although the latter is

more common in everyday life, the effects of total SD have been examined more thoroughly.

Both total and partial SD induce adverse changes in cognitive performance. First and foremost,

total SD impairs attention and working memory, but it also affects other functions, such as long-

term memory and decision-making. Partial SD is found to influence attention, especially

vigilance. Studies on its effects on more demanding cognitive functions are lacking. Coping with

SD depends on several factors, especially aging and gender. Their financial state is another factor

since they will think that they should become successful in order to be financially stable. Also

interindividual differences in responses are substantial. In addition to coping with SD, recovering

from it also deserves attention. Cognitive recovery processes, although insufficiently studied,

seem to be more demanding in partial sleep restriction than in total SD.

Since teens have grown up to think that they should be successful when they grow older,

they would rather do something more productive than to sleep. Their sleeps can average to only

about 4-6 hours everyday not reaching the recommended 8 hours. Sleep deprivation increases the

likelihood teens will suffer myriad negative consequences, including an inability to concentrate,

poor grades, drowsy-driving incidents, anxiety, depression, thoughts of suicide and even suicide

attempts. Teens in Asia are much more sleep deprived than in other countries especially in South

Korea. South Korea is considered to be an IT Powerhouse so South Korean adolescents have that

distinction, sleeping on average 4.9 hours a night, according to a 2012 study in Sleep by South

Korean researchers. These Asian teens routinely begin school between 7 and 8:30 a.m., and most

sign up for additional evening classes that may keep them up as late as midnight. South Korean

adolescents also have relatively high suicide rates (10.7 per 100,000 a year), and the researchers

speculate that chronic sleep deprivation is a contributor to this disturbing phenomenon.

Regardless of where they live, most teens follow a pattern of sleeping less during the week and

sleeping in on the weekends to compensate. But many accumulate such a backlog of sleep debt

that they don’t sufficiently recover on the weekend and still wake up fatigued when Monday

comes around.

Therefore, changing school start times is only part of the solution, experts say. More

widespread education about sleep and more resources for students are needed. Parents and

teachers need to trim back their expectations and minimize pressures that interfere with teen

sleep. And there needs to be a cultural shift, including a move to discourage late-night use of

electronic devices, to help youngsters gain much-needed rest.

[LOCAL]

In the study of sleep deprivation in the Philippines, sleep is an essential for numerous

reasons: It restores energy, lights off illness and fatigue by strengthening our immune system and

helps us think more clearly and creatively. Many Filipino students suffered sleep deprivation

because of school works, stress, uncomfortable environment, and medical conditions that make

them having hard time to sleep. However, being deprived of sleep will lead to serious condition

or death. Significant risks that arise due to lack of sleep includes higher rate of obesity and

depressions resulting to motor accidents as well as low quality of life.

Most Filipino students were sleep deprived. Teens should discipline themselves to have

enough hours of sleep for their physical and mental health. They must limit themselves of using

gadgets because this will lead to addiction giving them too much pleasure. Teenagers should be

aware of being sleep deprived because they will lack energy to win the battle of college life and

when they start working or be employed. To mention, not only teenagers but also young adults

were most deprived of sleep because of their numerous school works. Moreover, students tend

to take caffeine to have energy accomplishing their tasks. However, they should be reminded

that taking in too much caffeine is not a healthy habit despite the fact that it energize the minds

while studying. Students often sleep for long during daytime that is why they are wide awake at

night. Improving sleep in adolescents may help prevent or ease the symptoms of mental health

disorders. Apparently, in this new normal in the Philippines, having different learning modalities

like online, printed modular, and blended make the students more sleep deprived because of the

environment that distracts them during daytime. Students often studies during the night because

it is more peaceful and quiet. Due to this practice, their sleeping schedule is not normal because
they sleep less than eight hours in a day. Lack of sleep will affect the student’s academic

performance because of unhealthy mind caused by the factor mentioned. It also drains their

mental abilities and likewise leads to physical health at real risk. Science has linked poor slumber

with a number of health problems, from weight gain to a weakened immune system. Anxiety,

depression, and bipolar disorder have all been linked to a lack of sleep, and sleep deprivation in

teens can increase the risk of suicide. The biggest reason why respondents believe they don't

have appropriate sleeping habits is because their daily schedule has changed dramatically from

physically going to school everyday to just staying at home. Sleep is a physiological process

characterized by profound changes of autonomic cardiovascular control during different sleep

stages.

Therefore, students must discipline themselves through the guidance of parents and

teachers inculcating the value of enough sleep to have a sound mind and body. This study

should be spread through social media and others like pamphlets and flyers to make the Filipino

students aware on the consequences brought about by sleep deprivation.

SYNTHESIS OF RESEARCH RELATED LITERATURE

In foreign, the RRL in this study talks about how sleep deprivation affects our

health and it depicts the facts to make ourselves more cautious of being sleep deprived. There’s

a tremendous quantity of research being conducted and performed as a way to determine how to

overcome/surpass sleep deprivation, but in order to overcome/surpass any issue, it is important to

know first who is at risk of being suffered from it. Not just students were sleep deprived but also

workers like night shift workers who sacrifice themselves just to work. There were many
sources in RRL that gathers more information. In short, people were informed about the

consequences of their mental and physical health of having lack of sleep. However, In local,

many Filipino students do their school works until late at night just to pass their requirements

early. Sleep is an inseparable component of human health and life, and it is important for

growth, practice, and physical and mental health. It has an impact on individual learning

capacity, academic performance, and neural-behavioural functions. Multiple Filipino students

sleeps less than 6 hours and it affects their mental and physical health, although it is because

their minds were more awake at night to do their school works. To summarize, this habit should

inform the teachers and parents who were also sleep deprived to limit themselves while working.

SYNTHESIS OF RESEARCH RELATED STUDIES

Sleep is a vital component of human health and well-being. It plays a critical role in the

development and maintenance of mental and physical health. Not getting enough sleep can

affect a person’s abilities to learn and retain information. Likewise, going without adequate

sleep carries with it both short-and long-term consequences. Lack of sleep increases weariness

and sleepiness, and impairs cognitive performance. Interruptions to sleep can be irritating, but a

consistent lack of quality sleep can have a negative impact on a person’s capacity to operate.
CHAPTER 3
