There’s often a contradiction between how you expect a bike or a trail to feel and how
it actually feels. My initial run down a steep, rocky trail on the Mondraker Foxy
Carbon RR 29 was so much smoother than I was expecting that I was convinced it was
slow, as I associate speed with a jarring ride. After checking my Strava time, I was
surprised at how far off my perception was. It was one of the fastest times I’ve
recorded on that segment. The long front center creates a feeling of stability and
confidence while the Fox DPX2 Factory shock and Fox 36 Factory fork keep the bike
on the ground so you can keep the speed high. The 29-inch wheels roll over small
bumps with ease and take the harshness out of bigger obstacles. A smooth ride might
not always feel fast, but on the Foxy it usually is. To achieve the feeling of speed again,
I was pedaling through sections I normally coast and driving harder through corners.
As I challenged myself, my Strava PRs began to fall and my desire to keep going faster
increased. Once at the bottom of the trail, the Zero Suspension design and SRAM XO1
Eagle give an efficient pedaling platform and wide gear range to get back to the top
and do it again.

The Foxy 29 Family

There are three members of the Foxy Carbon 29 family, and they all use the Stealth Air
Carbon frame. The Foxy Carbon R 29 is the least expensive ($5,399) and comes with a
more affordable version of the same suspension setup. The Fox Float DPX2 is the
Performance edition, which lacks the low-friction Kashima Coat finish and the micro-
adjust compression tuning of the Factory edition. The Fox 36 Float Performance fork
has the same features as the Factory, just without Kashima Coat. It has a SRAM NX
Eagle drivetrain and SRAM’s entry-level Guide T brakes. The top-end Carbon XR 29
($9,399) switches the rear suspension to a Fox DHX2 coil shock and and the fork to
the Fox 36 29 with the GRIP2 damper. You get SRAM Code RSC brakes and a SRAM
X01 Eagle drivetrain.

Two aluminum options include the Foxy 29 ($3,900), which comes with same spec as
the Foxy R 29, and the Foxy XR 29 ($5,100), which swaps out the Fox DHX2 for a
RockShox SuperDeluxe RCT coil shock.

29er-Speci c Geometry

This is not the Foxy RR 27.5 with bigger wheels, although it does uses Mondraker’s
Forward Geometry philosophy of a long front center for increased stability with a
short stem for quick steering. The head tube angle is slackened from 66.5 to 66
degrees, while fork offset is increased from 37mm to 44mm. The effective seat tube
angle is steepened by one degree to 75.5. These changes are designed to optimize the
performance of the 29er wheels, and Mondraker claims this is to compensate for the
increased mass that has to get through tight turns and steep terrain.

Longer Reach- Standard Elsewhere

This is a big bike with a long front center. Relative to the Pivot Firebird 29 and Santa
Cruz Hightower LT in the high position, the reach is longer, but everything else is what
you’d expect from a bike of this style. At 470mm, it’s 10mm longer than the Firebird
29 and 47mm longer than the Hightower LT. Despite the reach of the Firebird 29er
being shorter, it does have the longest wheelbase of the three at 1,217mm. Pivot bikes
are known for their short chainstays, and this is no exception. The Firebird 29 has the
shortest chainstay at 429mm while the Foxy’s 435mm chainstay is close to the 438mm
that comes on the Hightower LT.

The suspension platform is called Zero Suspension. It’s so called because Mondraker
claims that it offers zero power loss, pedal kickback, or brake jack. One of our testers
said it is crisp and efficient and competitive with the best systems on the market. It
uses a floating shock (compression by both the upper and lower links) similar to VPP,
and on this model has a Fox Float DPX2 LV EVOL Factory shock with 150mm of rear-
wheel travel. It’s lively with excellent small-bump sensitivity and takes big hits in
stride. There is also very little bob when heading up technical trails or putting
maximum effort into the pedals. It rolls over pretty much everything you come across
if you are going fast enough, and the efficient platform helps keep your speed up. If the
trail slows down or gets twisty, climbing while keeping control of the front wheel can
become a challenge as it tends to flop. It happens with a lot of enduro/all-mountain
style bikes. When a trail starts to point upward after a descent at full speed, the
pedaling platform is firm and punchy enough to keep your speed up until the next
descent.

Ride Impressions

I normally like to steer my way through trails. I like the control and playfulness that
comes on shorter, more trail-oriented bikes, and I’m always skeptical that the longer
bikes get, the less fun they will be because I feel like I have less control and become a
passenger rather than a rider. My first ride on the Foxy left me feeling a bit of that as it
felt slow and I didn’t get that sensation of ripping through corners and dancing over
rock gardens that I like. Then I saw my times through some of the Strava segments. It
was fast. Much faster than any of my previously recorded times. The next time I had to
ride, I went back to the same trail and had another run to see if it was a lucky run or if
I could push it with a little extra effort. It was even faster yet. Once I adapted to the
riding style that a bike like this requires—getting over the fork and driving the front
wheel through turns instead of steering—the speed inspired an adrenaline rush that I
wanted more of.

I kept returning to same trails to see how far I could push it. On almost every steep
and rocky trail, I set a new PR. Through smoother sections of trail, the wheels rolled
over small bumps and when things started to get gnarly, the suspension soaked it all
up and let me keep the speed high. Both the shock and fork are incredibly smooth and
easy to adjust, so I was able to find my ideal settings quickly. The small-bump
sensitivity is excellent, and it ramps up smoothly through the travel as you ride bigger

obstacles. I rode 90 percent of the time with the shock in the Open setting, as the Zero
Suspension platform is excellent at limiting suspension movement from pedal forces
and makes for an efficient climber.

4 Waist Packs to Free Your Back

After a couple of hours in the saddle, I got tired pedaling the Foxy to the top of the
trails, but I couldn’t be sure it was the weight of the bike; it could have been that my
desire to push the bike as hard as I could and challenge the limits of my riding had
worn me out faster. I found myself chasing speed and pedaling in sections that I would
normally coast through. I was driving the front wheel and leaning into corners much
harder than I normally would because the stable feel of the ride gave me the sensation
of more control. The smooth ride and long, stable geometry that make it feel like the
ride is slower is also what contributes to inspiring the confidence it takes to ride
harder and get the feeling of speed back. I definitely got it back and with it came the
fastest times I have set on a mountain bike.
