Project Description

A survey assessing teacher’s instructional technology usage of current reality will be sent out

to the teaching staff to record baseline data. To begin the project, a survey gathering data on how

technology tools and media resources can support teaching and learning of STEAM will collect

data to drive additional professional development opportunities. I will create a maker space in

the media center’s instruction and resource center in order to model research based student

centered instruction. Professional development twice a month will be implemented based on

survey results. Student achievement in ELA, Math, and Science will also be desegregated to

provide data driven instructional support to improve student gains. A collaborative online wiki

workspace will be created to archive PD, post pertinent videos and information, and be a model

for learner communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. Teachers will be

encouraged to highlight their successes and share their transition from adopted use of

instructional technology to transformational. As a media resource teacher, I will model and

provide daily coaching to teachers with digital citizenship, social learning, and project based

learning.

Objectives

The purpose of the capstone project is to improve teaching strategies and methods so student

learning gains in ELA, Math, and Science are positively impacted.

• Teachers will engage in professional development and learning experiences which allow

teachers and students to be active, knowledgeable, and engaged learners in a global

society.

• Teachers will integrate technology instruction and create inquiry based learning

environments which enable all learners to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering,

Art, and Math.

• Teachers will create learning experiences for students to create, collaborate,

communicate, and think critically in social learning type activities.

Deliverables
• Create a Professional Development Calendar and implement learning opportunities based

on teachers’ needs survey.

• Create a Teacher Resource Professional Development Wiki site to inspire teacher

collaboration with 21st Century skills focusing on STEAM and best practices

implementing instructional technology.

• Teachers will use data of low student learning gains and weak skill areas to formulate

action plans and recreate learning experiences using Project based Learning (PBL), social

or constructivist learning theories.

• Provide onsite instructional coaching through modeling, conferences, and informal

discussions to support teachers.

• Create a Maker Space /STEAM Learning Lab area by the media center to support the

media center’s transition to the information and resource center to support teachers and

students.

Evaluation
This project’s goals and objectives will be measured using surveys, data, Technology

Information Matrix (TIM), and rubrics based on the Framework for Quality Teaching and

Learning by Robert Marzano (Marzano, 2007). SLPS District has permission to utilize the TIM

and Marzano Framework as they are part of the district’s goals for quality instruction. The pre

and post surveys generate teachers’ integration of technology in the classrooms and are written

by myself using Microsoft forms. Responses will be collected on excel spreadsheets. Collections

of sample science lesson plans from original lessons will be recreated by teachers after

professional development of PBL and constructivist teaching methods. Teachers will first self-

rate instruction and lesson planning using the Technology Integration Matrix. At the end of the

project, teachers will reflect upon their strengths and complete the TIM again comparing

instructional improvements. Using the Teacher Evaluation Tool for Quality Instruction outlined

in Robert Marzano’s The Art and Science of Teaching (Marzano, 2007), data on Domain 2 will

be collected. Classroom observation data of Planning and Preparing Lessons along with

elements on “uses of materials and technologies” are rated in early September. Teacher

observations focusing on Domain 2, element 46 of this tool, along with the surveys and

technology matrix, will provide us with data on meeting goals for this project as the school year

and classroom observations are completed.
