Differences between Tyler’s and Wheeler’s model

The main difference between Tyler and Wheeler model of curriculum is that Tyler model of
curriculum is a linear model while Wheeler model of curriculum is a cyclic model.

Tyler Model and Wheeler Model are two models used for curriculum development. Tyler’s model
is a linear model that contains four basic components namely: objectives, selection of learning
experiences, organization of learning experiences, and evaluation. Although it is an old model, it
is still widely used in curriculum development. The Wheeler model, on the other hand, is a
cyclical model based on the Tyler model. According to this model, curriculum development is a
continuous cycle that reacts to changes in the education sector.

Difference between the Tyler and Wheeler models of the curriculum

definition
The Tyler model of the curriculum was developed by American educator Ralph Tyler in the 1940s,
while the Wheeler model is a cyclical curriculum model developed by DK Wheeler in 1967.
nature
The Tyler model is linear while the Wheeler model is cyclic.
Phases
The Tyler Model has four main components: objectives, selection of learning experiences,
organization of learning experiences, and evaluation. The Wheeler model, on the other hand, has
five phases: goals, goals and objectives, learning experiences, selection of content, organization
and integration of learning experiences and content, and evaluation.
evaluation
Although both models have an evaluation phase, the evaluation in Tyler's model is terminal as it
is the last phase in a linear model, but the evaluation is the Wheeler model is not terminal. In the
Wheeler model, however, the feedback from the evaluation phase is reduced to goal and
objectives.
Content and learning experience
In the Tyler model there is no separate component as content, while in the Wheeler model the
content is separate from the learning experiences from which it was developed.
diploma
In short, the Tyler Model is a linear model that has four main components: goals, selection of
learning experiences, organization of learning experiences, and evaluation. The Wheeler model,
on the other hand, is a cyclical model with five phases: goals, objectives and objectives, learning
experiences, content selection, organization and integration of learning experiences and content,
and evaluation. Hence, this is the main difference between the Tyler and Wheeler models of
curriculum.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Tyler’s model is a straight line, deductive model which focusing on curriculum as a
means of aiming toward an educational object whereas Wheeler’s model is a cyclical, inductive
model which is a continuous responding to the changes within education where any
information or practice will bring changes.
