WEEK 1

I was introduced to the various departments in the organization and the staffs.

The various shipping terminologies was also introduced to me.

WEEK 2

More of the maritime terminologies were also introduced.

I was also tested to know how much I have learnt the call signs.

A code name was also given me to be FOSTRUST.

WEEK 3

After the public holiday, I was posted to the communication office i.e. the radio room.

Various calls came in from different shipment at high sea and I did well to answer them all.

WEEK 4

At the radio room, I made calls through to the various shipment as communications were
breached due to the absence of signals.
At the latter part of the week, signal was finnaly restored and communication lines were
reestablished.

WEEK 5

After the two days public holiday, I was taught of the two types of vessels i.e.

 Motor tank: These carries wet cargo such as petroleum products.


 Ocean envy: these carries wheats, flour, and also equipment like cars etc.

WEEK 6

I WAS TAUGHT uow to create a manifest.

A manifest is a detailed document that carry the spec of the co mmodity the vessel carries. Forms
of manifest includes bill of lading, form M, certificate of quality and quantity.

The Bill of Lading acts as evidence of a contract of carriage between the shipper and the
shipping line to carry out the transportation of cargo under the terms and conditions agreed upon
between the seller and buyer. It proves the existence of a goods transportation contract.

Form M is a mandatory statutory document to be completed by all importers for importation of
goods into Nigeria. The life span of a Form M is 180 days.
I was also asked to get a Form M from the bank.

WEEK 7

All documents of importation of cargo were put together and submitted to custom office for
validation.

I did a follow up on NIMASA (Nigeria Maritime and Safety Administration) and NPA (Nigeria
Port Authority) for a debit note to be paid to the government.

WEEK 8

I took all the debit note to the bank and made payment into the necessary government account. I
was then introduced to the berthing meeting.

BERTHING MEETING: A preliminary meeting held to determine the allocation of specific


ships to respective berths within the ports. These meetings are held daily where agents declare
the particulars of the ship and the cargo which informs berth allocation by the Port Authority.
I was at the meeting as an observer.
I also learnt how to be a shipment agent.

WEEK 9
I was introduced to vessel operation.
vessel operation are key role played by the agent when vessels are at the berth or jetty (a place
where ships are anchored or secured for operation).
These agents collaborate with the habour officials. The habour staff help to berth the vessels e.g.
moving men, habour pilot that help the captain of the vessel to locate channels or water channels
to berth.

WEEK 10
Official commencement of vessels was done all through.
I also responded to emails from clients and assisted in berthing the vessels on arrival i.e. making
landing arrangement of shipment vessels.
I was also involved in the documentation process of these vessels.

Week 11
I attended to immigrations and other port related officials on the commencement of the vessels.
I reperted issues to the line manager and followed it up.
I also monitored discharge of vessels iperation with the officials and did some noting on the
vessels.
