SUMMARY OF WEEKLY REPORT

WEEK 1
Week one of the internship started on 2nd January 2024 and ended on 5th January
2024 at the new Mangalore port. The week stared with getting to know the
company and getting the required documentation for the work. Then we were
educated about the port and its working like berthing policy, different agents
which are involved in the transportation of the goods through the ports, different
norms, performance report, appointment letter, different storage options,
charges related to the different storage provided by the port. Visited the JSW
container terminal (Jindal South West) and got to know how they work, types of
containers, types of cargo they deal with, their procedure of importing or
exporting of goods through their company and the containers, different market
player in the container business. We also visited The Group of Delta where we
got to know about the logistics and the transportation of cargo from the port to
the delivery address through trucks and other means of transport within the
given time period. We also got to know The type of cargo they deal with on
daily basis, the software they use, licencing process and requirement for
exporting.

Week 2
From January 8 to January 12, we observed the unloading of NPK bulk cargo
from the Densa Pelican vessel. Then we visited the port fire service station
where they taught us about the OST 156 guidelines and the Dock Safety Act.
Then we saw the anchorage of the cruise ship at berth 3. Then we visited the
Inspectorate of Dock Safety. They taught us about the sections 118 of Dock
Safety which is followed by all ports. If Section 118 of Dock Safety is not
followed, then action will be taken. We were told about 12 major ports under the
central government and about minor port or small port that comes under the
state government or are privately owned. We learned about the two types of
cargo and vessels that are break bulk and break cargo, types of vessels are MV
(motorised vessel) and MT (motorised tanker). There are also geared vessels
(equipped with cranes) and gearless vessels (without cranes). They also told us
about the cargo handling operations and water draft (depth of water),
singlepoint mooring (SPM). We also visited the customs office where we were
able to see how that department operates and how they ensure that all rules and
regulations are correctly followed by everyone.
Week 3
The third week of the internship began on January 15, 2024, and finished on
January 20, 2024. The first event of the week was a tour to the Adani coal port,
which is situated on berth number 15. We saw the massive import of coal into
India for use in energy generation, as well as the port's assistance in the port's
coal transportation and storage. We witnessed the significant role that railroads
play in moving coal from the Adani coal terminal to the Adani thermal power
plant. After that, we went to the oil jetty, which is situated on berth number 9.
This location dealt with the transfer of many different liquid goods. A variety of
pipelines, owned by various businesses, were in operation for both import and
export. Later, we assisted the port in locating the various pipes that are situated
on Jetty No. 9 and helped the port in doing a deep study about the different
pipelines on jetty number 9. We saw the unloading arm which is used to unload
the liquid cargo which comes to the port.

Week 4
The fourth week of the internship started on 23rd of January 2024 and ended on
25th of January 2024. The week started with making a report and a presentation
on the different pipelines that were there on the berth number 9. The report had
the details of the different cargo which is imported or exported through the
different pipelines, and the number of pipelines that were present there and the
details of those pipelines like cargo they carry, dimensions, length, connectivity,
agency. Visit to the traffic manager where we were educated about the major
commodity, details about the two operational department which are present in
the port(marine, traffic), different scales of rate (vessel related charges and
cargo related charges), auction of unclaimed and uncleared goods under section
50 of sales of goods act. We also visited RCHW (Registered Cargo Handling
Wing) where we were educated about IGM (Import General Manifest) which is
a document that contain the details of the cargo carried by the vessel which is
entering the Indian waters, we also got to know about the vessel profile process,
demurrage charges.
WEEK 5
The fifth week of the internship started on 29th January and ended on 2nd
February. We educated about maritime logistics, international maritime trade
and logistics. In which we learned about the different rules and regulations
which are followed by every country. Then we went through the Railway
marshalling yard where we saw how trains are used to transport the bulk cargo
using trains which are owned and operated by government. Collected data
related to Railway marshal yard for the financial year of 2022- 2023 then we
recorded it in excel for analysis for better understanding of the data.
