the questions from 31 to 35.
I grew up in the Great Lakes States and for many years now, during my annual summer visit back
to Michigan, I’m always happy about what I don’t see. I don’t see flocks of people swarming adorable
and peaceful lakeside towns like Petoskey or thundering down the steep white sands of Sleeping Bear
Dunes.
However, I’ve been thinking about the downsides of being out of sight and out of mind. Most
people seldom think about the Great Lakes. Many of them can’t even name all five. But they should care
about them because the Great Lakes are the continent’s most precious resource, incalculably more
valuable than oil, gas, or coal.
Together the lakes hold more than 20 percent of the surface freshwater on Earth and 84 percent of
the surface freshwater in North America. Almost 40 million Americans and Canadians drink from the
lakes, fish on them, transport goods over them, farm their shores, and work in cities that wouldn’t exist
without them.
And yet we abuse them terribly: polluting them, introducing invasive species, allowing fertilizer
runoff to create algal blooms large enough that they can be seen from space. Climate change means the
lakes don’t freeze as much as they used to, and severe storms have become more frequent.
Everywhere you look on Earth, there are big problems. Fires out of control on the U.S. West
Coast and, shockingly, in the Siberian Arctic. Melting ice in Antarctica and melting glaciers in the
Himalaya. The careless destruction of the Amazonian rainforest. You hear a lot about these problems in
the media but we hear less about what’s happening to the Great Lakes: the irreplaceable, fragile
ecosystem of six quadrillion gallons of freshwater that our planet needs to survive.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is coming to the workplace and it’s about to change everything,
including how to learn.

3
A new era of automation will profoundly change everyday tasks in the office and in the field.
Workers must adapt by re-skilling for these new workloads, and it’ll take new technology to help them
do it at scale.
If you’re not already working alongside an AI-based software application or robot, then you
probably will be soon. The Future of Jobs 2020 report predicts that machines will spend as much time on
work-based tasks as human employees by 2025.
Machine learning could even power performance evaluations, as algorithms assess employee
activities and offer training and career advice. Does that mean humans should be worried about machines
taking their jobs?
According to Joe Speicher, senior director of impact innovation at software company Autodesk,
“Technology automates tasks, not jobs”. He cites examples in a sector ripe for disruption: construction
workers who have been focused entirely on manual tasks for decades. Now they interact with applications
like a construction-management tool that use machine learning to deliver timely information about project
risks, including safety issues.
In manufacturing, sensors and robotics are fueling a new level of automation that is transforming
employee roles. “Carpenters no longer need to put up frames on a jobsite. They now oversee a
manufacturing line of machines that put up those frames and ensure quality control for those units,”
Speicher says.
This transformation of jobs will place more pressure on the workforce to adapt. “We’ve had the
notion that workers are ready to go into the workplace without much investment beyond high school or
college. That approach is proving unsuccessful.”
Employees must constantly refine and reinvent themselves throughout their career, taking on new
skills that will help them adapt to an increasingly automated world. People are eager to adapt and are
already seeking out continuous learning opportunities for themselves. From April to June 2020, four
times as many people looked for online learning opportunities while employers offered five times as
many online learning courses.
As the pace of development accelerates, this re-skilling will need to be fast and focused. 94% of
business leaders are expecting employees to pick up new skills on the job, there will be no time for
inefficiency.
