the questions from 31 to 35.
From far out in space, Earth looks like a blue ball. Since water covers three-fourths of the Earth’s
surface, blue is the color we see most. The continents look brown, like small islands floating in the huge,
blue sea. White clouds wrap around the Earth like a light blanket. The Earth is shaped like a sphere, or a
ball. It is 25,000 miles around! It would take more than a year to walk around the whole planet. A
spaceship can fly around the widest part of the sphere in only 90 minutes.
Even though spaceships have traveled to the Moon, people cannot visit the Moon without special
suits. The Moon has no air or water. Plants and animals can’t live there either. Astronauts first landed on
the Moon in 1969. After that, there were six more trips to the Moon. They brought back Moon rocks,
which scientists are still studying. There are holes, or craters, all over the Moon’s surface. Scientists
believe that meteorites smashed into the Moon millions of years ago and formed the craters.
The Sun is the closest star to Earth. A star is a hot ball of burning gas. The Sun looks very big
because it is so close. But the Sun is just a medium-sized star. Billions of far-away stars are much bigger
than our Sun. The burning gases from the Sun are so hot that they warm the Earth from 93 million miles
away! Even though the Sun is always glowing, the night here on Earth is dark. That’s because the Earth
rotates, or turns around, every 24 hours. During the day, the Earth faces the Sun. Then we see light.
During the night, the Earth turns away from the Sun. Then it faces the darkness of space.

the questions from 36 to 42.
The Indian word nimba means a tree which provides good health. According to Hindu custom, on
the Hindu New Year’s Day, it is a custom to eat a few tender nimba leaves.
The nimba is also known as the neem tree. It has been grown in India for centuries. The neem is
an extremely useful tree with small leaves, sweet-smelling flowers and small fruit. It is a fast grower, acts
as a windbreak, is resistant to insects and needs little water. It will grow in salty soil and is long living.
That is why in a country like Oman, one of the Arab nations, the neem has been widely planted.
Oman is dry and hot. Neem trees line roadways. They add greenery to parks in a land where greenery is
not common.
Although the neem tree is deciduous, it doesn’t lose all its leaves at once. It allows a glow of gold
to affect some of the leaves and renews its foliage slowly as summer approaches.
Experiments in Oman have shown that on blistering hot days the temperature under the neem tree
can be up to eight degrees lower.
In India, few villages are without a neem tree. It is more or less a backyard chemist shop. Much of
the folk medicine has been supported by scientific discoveries: 135 chemical compounds have been
isolated. One chemical is an insect repellent, while others stop swelling, fight tuberculosis, or reduce pain.
It can be a gargle for sore throats and is used in the treatment of diabetes, leprosy and malaria. Scientists
are investigating claims that the tree is an air purifier. Boiled leaves provide a treatment for skin
infections. The small, knobbly nuts provide oil for the treatment of head lice.
Many Indians make and eat neem leaf chutney for good health. It seems the neem tree can cure
almost any complaint.
Farmers use the trees as a pesticide and to protect their crops from fungus and insect disease.
Termites avoid the tree. It is no wonder it is called “the world in a tree”.
