Aims of the Course

Welcome to this distance-learning course on the Madrid System for the International
Registration of Marks.

This course has the following aims:

• Explore the main features and benefits of the Madrid System;

• Develop an understanding of the principles and processes of accession to
the Madrid Protocol;
• Teach to exercise the responsibilities of the Office of origin;
• Identify the main role and different tasks of the Office of a designated
Contracting Party;
• Explain how to communicate effectively with WIPO;
• Outline the possible changes in international registrations and how to
request them.

Don’t worry if some of the words in the aims are unfamiliar to you; they will be
explained as part of the course.

The level of the course is best described as introductory but it is firmly targeted at
people such as yourself who are working in, or have the intention to work in, a
national or regional intellectual Property (IP) Office or other local authority involved in
the preparation for an accession to the Madrid System. It is also recommended to
examiners and other administration staff in the IP Offices of current and future
members of the Madrid System. It is of specific interest to IP attorneys and agents,
trademark owners, IP teachers and students.

Structure of the Course

The entire course is self-paced, i.e. there is no prescribed time in which to complete
the modules within the course. However, we have estimated that the average length
of time it will take to study the course will be around 16 hours.

Normally people find that it is possible to study such a course at the rate of about 10
hours per week so you should expect your study to take under 7-9 days including the
self-assessments at the end of each module.

We have split the course up into various modules and some of the modules contain
multiple topics to aid your comprehension. The length of each module and its sub-
components will be indicated to you before you start to help you plan your study.

Estimated completion time –two hours

7. Module 7: Final self-assessment

We recommend that you study the modules in the sequence in which they are
presented on screen. For instance, you should study module 3 before module 4.
However, the modules have been developed as stand-alone learning units, so you
can navigate throughout the course in whatever manner you prefer.

All of the modules within the course have an end-of-module self-assessment that
uses multiple choice questions. You will get your mark for this as soon as you have
completed it. You also have the option of completing a final self-assessment module,
Module 7, where you are eligible to receive a certificate if you answer 6 or more of
the questions correctly.

Technical and Substantive Assistance

Undertaking the Course

We encourage you to work through each of the course topics from beginning to end,
but the program is designed so that you can visit topics separately if necessary.
You can navigate through the course by using the ‘next’ and ‘back’ buttons at the
end of each module, or through the menu on the right-hand side of your screen (the
menu could also be at the top of your screen, depending on your screen size).

The modules include:

• Learning objectives,
• Videos,
• Course content,
• Work Book Guides, and
• Learning activities to assess your knowledge.

Don’t forget to watch out for Lumi, your character guide throughout the course, for
extra hints and information to help you with your learning.

My name is Lumi. I’ll be here with you as

your guide, directing you to valuable
insights along the way.

Tip: Make sure you enter your name correctly. If you decide to complete the final,
seventh Self-Assessment Module, the name you enter will be the one that appears
on the certificate of completion if you answer 6 or more of questions correctly.

It is intended that you study the course on your computer and you are asked to read
text on your screen, answer questions and listen to recorded audio segments. The
audio segments merit special mention. They are there for two reasons:

• To reduce the amount of text you have to read from the screen, and
• To provide another medium for your learning. This will improve your
retention of the material.

Each section of the course is preceded by a list of learning objectives, which detail
the competencies you should have after your study of that section. Read them at the
beginning to give yourself an idea of what you will be learning and read them again
at the end of the module to check that you have achieved these objectives.

Assessing Your Progress

Madrid Knowledge Bridge
As you progress through the modules, you will be creating your own Madrid
Knowledge Bridges - one for each module.

You will build your bridges from items you have gathered by answering the various
knowledge check questions contained within the modules.

Every section of bridge you build will add to your understanding of how the Madrid
System operates as a one-stop solution for trademark owners to obtain and maintain
protection in multiple markets in a simple and economical way.

Knowledge Check Questions

To help you test your progress you will find Knowledge Check Questions (KCQ) at
various points in the materials. They are there to help you be sure you have
understood the preceding material. When you encounter a KCQ you will be
prompted to select an answer before being shown the answer. These KCQs are for
your personal use, since your answers are only seen by yourself.

Don’t worry if you answer the question incorrectly. You will have a second chance to
get the answer right. If you get the answer wrong a second time Lumi will provide
you with the correct answer so you can continue with your learning.

Self-Assessment Questions
At the end of each module, there will be a self-assessment. The self-assessment
allows you to evaluate what you have learned from the module. The self-assessment
is made up of a number of multiple choice questions. You must answer at least three
of five questions correctly to pass each self-assessment.

or topic before retaking the self-assessment.

Self-Assessment Module
In addition to the Self-Assessment Questions throughout the modules, you may also
complete the final, self-assessment module, Module 7. You may complete this
module at any time, but we recommend that you complete all the modules first, to
maximise your learning.

The self-assessment questions in this module have been drawn from all the
preceding modules. You must answer at least six of ten questions correctly to pass
the final self-assessment module. By passing you will be eligible to receive a
certificate of completion.
