Examination rules

1. No student will be allowed to enter the examination hall after 30 minutes have lapsed from the
time the paper started.

2. A five-minute reading/checking time will be given prior to the examination commencing time. A
10-minute reading/checking time will be given for National OL and AL for certain subjects.

3. The students will be informed 15 minutes before the end of the examination so that they could
finalise their answers. Each classroom is equipped with a wall clock for students to keep track of
time. In the Primary section, teachers provide further verbal assistance.

4. When the examination is over and the answer scripts are collected, the Supervisor/Invigilator
will count the number of answer scripts to check whether it tallies with the number of students
present. Until this task is over, no student will be allowed to leave the examination hall.

5. Candidates will be instructed as to what material will be provided by the school and what
materials they should bring. They should not bring any other items with them when they
take their seats in the examination hall. They should keep their bags outside the classroom.
Borrowing is strictly prohibited.

6. The answer script will be taken away from any student who is found to be copying, talking or
borrowing. That student will get zero marks for his/her paper.

7. For G.C.E. Ordinary/Advanced Level Examinations, it is compulsory that students pay their
examination fees through the school and that they sit for the total number of subjects taught. If
required a student may study additional subjects and apply through the school.

8. Five marks are allocated for handwriting in each test paper from Grades 4 to 8.

9. If there are any accidental errors in the marking or mark addition, students are given the
opportunity to bring it to their teacher’s attention during the paper discussion days allocated in
the school calendar.

10. After the issuance of the Progress Reports, if any further errors are detected, the errors will be
corrected on condition that they be reported to the school in writting, via the Principal, within 7
days.

PARENTING STYLES AND SUBSEQUENT BEHAVIOUR IN CHILDREN

Dear Parents/Guardian,

Do you know to what extent your parenting style is related to your child’s behaviour? Finding the right
balance between love, indulgence, discipline and authority is an extremely difficult task even for the
most conscientious parent. Read the following classifications (Baumrind -1967) which link parenting
styles to behaviour in children and reflect on how you can improve your own parenting style to benefit
your child and to bring out the best in him/her.

There are three main parenting styles which result in three types of behaviour.

Parenting style Child behaviour

i. Permissive-indulgent parent s Impulsive-aggressive children
ii. Authoritarian parent s Conflicted-irritable children
iii. Authoritative parent s Energetic-friendly children

Cultural events and joint activities planned Achievement-oriented
Educational standards set and enforced

(Please note that each parent characteristic does not necessarily correspond directly to the behaviour
given in the opposite column; rather the general parenting style corresponds to the overall behaviour
observed in children.)
A combination of an authoritarian and a permissive-indulgent parent (one parent is too strict,
demanding and is never satisfied with the child and the other parent is over indulgent, too permissive,
overvalues the child and tries to compensate by defending the child even when the child needs to be
corrected) is also known to create an unhealthy environment for children. Overvaluing the child is a
contributing factor to the emergence of narcissistic personalities.
A fourth parenting style was later identified (Maccoby and Martin -1983), characterised by neglect
and lack of involvement. This category has been named “Disengaged parents”. Such parents permit
whatever necessary to minimise time and effort required for the interaction with the child. These
parents focus on their own needs (career, social recognition, entertainment) rather than those of the
child, and sometimes may confuse their needs with those of the child. Children form such homes are
often observed to be socially incompetent, irresponsible, immature and alienated from their families.
They also show disruptions in cognitive development and school performance.
A study conducted by Professor. Jay Belesky, an internationally recognised expert in the field of child
development and family studies (1990), has found that parents raising their children in a climate of
affection and responsiveness, using clear, explicable rules, providing developmentally-enhancing and
autonomy-granting environments are more likely to have children with a positive self-concept who are
emotionally stable, socially competent, well-accepted by their peers, academically successful and
intrinsically self-responsible.

Dear student of Lyceum,
It is entirely possible that when you read the Student’s Handbooks
1 & 2, you might think that Lyceum is a difficult place for you to be
a part of because there seems to be so many demands made on
you. But in reality, this is not the case. All of the rules and regulations
become problems only if you are not a dedicated and well-behaved
student. If you come to school with a thirst for knowledge and learning,
if you want to behave well and be kind, helpful and cooperative with
your teacher and fellow students, you will find that school life is a
wonderful experience, full of new discoveries and that you will make
a lot of happy memories that you will carry with you all your life.
Everyone who works at Lyceum only wants to help you grow, learn
and to protect you. We have these rules so that nobody gets treated
badly and everybody gets treated equally at Lyceum.
So we hope that you understand our love and care for you and
hope that you will love and care for your school as well.
