Chapter 3: Global Trends and Opportunities in the Pharmacy Profession

Introduction

This chapter focuses on the forces impacting society and the healthcare industry that
affect trends in pharmacy. These include fast-paced advances and innovation in
technology and science. It will also explore some of the latest pharmacy trends and how
they will shape the industry in the next decade.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the chapter, the students must have:
1. Recognized the current trends on the pharmacy practice/profession; and
2. Summarized the emerging and future of pharmacy practice from published journals.

Global Trends and Opportunities in the Pharmacy Profession
• Recent decades have witnessed significant changes in the scope of medicines-related
pharmacist-delivered care, and advanced practice and specialized pharmacists are
being professionally recognized and credentialed around the world.

1. The Increasing Pace of Innovation


• Advancements in healthcare technology continue to drive innovation in retail
pharmacy and other practice sites.
• New health information technology and the increasing awareness and use of
robotic dispensing systems have made pharmacy operations faster and more
efficient, while at the same time improving patient safety.
• Technology innovations have also led to more streamlined and coordinated
workflows, which are helping pharmacies optimize operations throughout their
entire drug delivery cycle.

2. A Shift from Product- to Patient-Centered Care


• The proliferation of robotic dispensing solutions in pharmacies allows them to the
spend more time interacting with patients as a contributing member of the

comprehensive healthcare team.


• Some of the patient-focused pharmacist services include:
- Promotion of health and wellness
- Prevention of diseases
- Immunization/vaccination
- Education of patients and care givers

3. Expansion of Pharmacy Services


• Specialty pharmacy continues to grow globally.
• The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) currently recognizes eight (8) specialty
practice areas
- Ambulatory Care Pharmacy
- Critical Care Pharmacy
- Nuclear Pharmacy
- Nutrition Support Pharmacy
- Oncology Pharmacy
- Pediatric Pharmacy
- Pharmacotherapy
- Psychiatric Pharmacy
• Added qualifications (pharmacotherapy specialists)
- Cardiology
- Infectious Diseases
• Pharmacists in direct patient care

• As of March 2016, 1,960 specialty certifications have been granted to international


pharmacists representing 45 countries.

• Cross-country certification is common. Pharmacists in the Philippines are


encouraged to pursue international certification by the US Board of Pharmacy
Specialties (BPS). The Philippine Pharmacists Association offers educational
support for pharmacists who want to pursue BPS certification.

Journal Review

• Make a journal review on one published article focusing on emerging and future
trends in pharmacy.
• Submit the output on or before 11:59 pm, September 13, 2020 (Sunday) via mVLE

“A journal review examines a scholarly article’s strengths and weaknesses in terms of


what the article is attempting to accomplish. The review should include description,
paraphrases, and own analysis.”
