Good Pharmacy Practice
- the practice of pharmacy that responds to the needs of
the people who use the pharmacists’ services to provide
optimal, evidence-based care (WHO)

Background:
• WHO organized meetings on the role of pharmacist
• FIP (International Pharmaceutical Federation) developed standards for pharmacy
services under the heading “Good pharmacy practice in community and hospital
pharmacy settings”.
• FIP/WHO joint document on good pharmacy practice (GPP) was published in 1999
• FIP revised and updated the GPP to reflect the contemporary standards of practice
and thinking, as well as national standards observed among member countries in
2009
Importance of the Roles of Pharmacist

Importance of the Roles of Pharmacist


- Health is fundamental to the happiness and welfare of all
people.
- Medicines are an essential and critical part of health-care
services in all cultures and societies.
- Essential part of disease prevention programs and
disease treatment plans
- There is a gap between proven efficacy of medicines
demonstrated in clinical trials and their actual
effectiveness in practice
- Wrong slection of medicine, dosage, adminstration,
adherence, interactions, cost
Importance of the Roles of Pharmacist

- Pharmacists are specifically educated and trained health


professionals
- in maximizing health care (managing costs of
medicines and its quality)
- Ensuring safe and efficacious use of medicines
FIP emphasizes the important role of pharmacists in bridging the gap between
between the potential benefit of medicines and its actual value
Good Pharmacy Practice

The mission of pharmacy practice is to contribute to health


improvement and to help patients with health problems to make the
best use of their medicines

There are six components to this mission:


- being readily available to patients with or without an
appointment
- identifying and managing or triaging health-related problems
- health promotion
- assuring effectiveness of medicines
- preventing harm from medicines
- making responsible use of limited health-care resources
Good Pharmacy Practice Requirements

Requirements:
a. The pharmacist's first concern in all settings is the welfare of patients.
b. The core of the pharmacy activity is to help patients make the best use of
medicines
c. An integral part of the pharmacist's contribution is the promotion of rational and
economic prescribing, as well as dispensing.
d. The objective of each element of pharmacy service is relevant to the patient, is
clearly defined and is effectively communicated to all those involved.
The 4 main elements of Good Pharmacy Practice

Elements of GPP that needs to be addressed:


1. Activities associated with promotion of good health, avoidance of
ill health and the achievement of health objectives.
2. Activities associated with the supply and use of medicines and
items for the administration of medicines or otherwise related to
treatment. These activities may be undertaken in the pharmacy or
in an institution or home care setting.
3. Activities associated with self care, including advice about and,
where appropriate, the supply of a medicine or other treatment for
the symptoms of ailments that can properly be self treated.

Four main roles of Pharmacists

There are four main roles of pharmacists :


- In each these roles minimum national standards are set

1. Prepare, obtain, store, secure, distribute, administer,


dispense and dispose of medical products.
2. Provide effective medication therapy management.
3. Maintain and improve professional performance.
4. Contribute to improve effectiveness of the health-care
system and public health.
Roles of Pharmacists

1. Prepare, obtain, store, secure, distribute, administer,


dispense and dispose of medical products.
- Prepare extemporaneous medicine preparations and
medical products
- Obtain, store and secure medicine preparations and
medical products
- Distribute medicine preparations and medical products
- Administration of medicines, vaccines and other
injectable medications
- Dispensing of medical products
- Dispose of medicine preparations and medical
products
Roles of Pharmacists

2. Provide effective medication therapy management.


- Assess patient health status and needs
- Manage patient medication therapy
- Monitor patient progress and outcomes
- Provide information about medicines and health-
related issues

3. Maintain and improve professional performance


- Plan and implement continuing professional development
strategies to improve current and future performance

4. Contribute to improve effectiveness of the health-care system and


public health
- Disseminate evaluated information about medicines and various
aspects of self-care
- Engage in preventive care activities and services
- Comply with national professional obligations, guidelines and
legislations
- Advocate and support national policies that promote improved
health outcomes
