Institutional Pharmacy/Pharmacists
Defined as:
any pharmacy located within any hospital, sanitorium, clinic or dispensary
in which drugs are compounded or dispensed to its patients or patients of another
licensed in-patient health care facility with whom it has a contract.

Health care institutions include:


nursing homes, extended care facilities, neighborhood health centers, and
health maintenance organizations
Examples:
Government and private hospitals, National mental health center, Philippine
Tuberculosis institute (Quezon institute), leprosarium (Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial
Hospital and Sanitarium, barangay health centers, on-site clinics in private companies
Onsite Clinic?

What is an Onsite Clinic?

• A workplace “onsite clinic” is a setting where an


employer offers one or more medical and wellness
services, delivered by licensed providers, to all or a
designated portion of its active population and other
eligible individuals.
• Today’s clinics are often referred to as “health and
wellness centers,” due to the wide range of first aid,
occupational health, acute, primary, specialty, condition
management, wellness and ancillary services offered at
the location.

What is an Onsite Clinic?

• Many started as occupational health clinics, treating


minor injuries and serving workplace health and safety
needs, but have expanded in to primary care and other
areas.
Institutional Pharmacy/Pharmacists

According to IPAP (Institutional Pharmacist Association of


the Philippines)
• Institutional pharmacy is also called Occupational Health
Pharmacy, a practice of pharmacy in the institutional,
corporate, company or industrial setting.
• Pharmacy services is part of the medical services required
from a private and government companies
• Employees and /or dependents receive the medical
services as part of the company’s benefit
Institutional Pharmacy/Pharmacists

According to IPAP (Institutional Pharmacist Association of


the Philippines)
• Pharmacists are responsible for handling, storing and
dispensing of ethical or prescription products
• Pharmacists works in collaborative practice in health care
as required by law.

Functions of Industrial pharmacists
According to IPAP (Industrial Pharmacist Association of the
Philippines)
• Procurement of medicines
• Inventory of medicines
• Dispensing, with counseling
• Secures license to operate
• Administrative works

improved health of the workforce which is the building
block of our nation

Collaborative practice

• Collaborative practice agreement – pharmacists enter


into an agreement with other health care providers like
private clinics
• A formal agreement in which a licensed provider
makes a diagnosis, supervises patient care, and
refers patients to a pharmacist under a protocol
that allows the pharmacist to perform specific
patient care functions.

• Medication Therapy Management (MTM):
medication therapy review, personal medication
record, medication-related action plan, intervention
and/or referral, and documentation and follow-up.

Pharmacists assume professional responsibility for
performing patient assessments, counseling, and
referrals; ordering laboratory tests; administering
drugs; and selecting, initiating, monitoring,
continuing, and adjusting drug regimens

• A practice of developing and applying
evidence-based medication use strategies that
enhance member and population health outcomes
while optimizing health care resources.

• Creation of formulary - designed to optimize patient
care and therapy management (HOW?)
• Creation of clinical program – designed to enhance
patient care, particularly for those with chronic
conditions
• Use of communication protocols to facilitate
exchange of necessary information (such as drug
safety alerts)

• Pharmacists collaborate with other healthcare
professionals to design effective benefit structures
that serve the clients’ needs:

this, the following may be identified:
• Drug/drug interactions
• Duplication of therapy
• Known allergies
• Under- or overdosing

• Manage the business side of the pharmacy
• Negotiate with manufacturers for discounts on
drug prices and establish networks of
pharmacies

pharmacy preceptorship, which aims to provide
experiential training to pharmacists in various
internship sites.
