10 Filipino Scientist
1. Carvey Ehren Maigue
The Solar Window this invention successfully converted damaged crops into a solar window.
This solar window called AuREUS, was inspired by how the Aurora Borealis is formed. Aureus
makes use of a substrate that converts UV light into visible light. It aims to help farmers whose
crops are affected by typhoons that heavily hit the country every year.
2. Raul Desturas Team
Locally developed Covid-19 Test Kits. A researcher from the University of the Philippines
National Institutes of Health (UPM-NIH) invented this low-cost diagnostic kit which can detect
the 2019 novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) with high specificity and efficiency through a one-
step multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) platform
3. Nilo Bugtai’s Team
The team of biomedical engineers from De La Salle University (DLSU) led Dr. Nilo Bugtai, has
created AGAPAY, a robotic exoskeleton prototype with a biofeedback mechanism for
rehabilitation of post-stroke and injured patients by assisting motor movements in the shoulder,
arm and hand. AGAPAY aims to provide a cost-effective solution to production and works by
utilizing a real time biofeedback system that records neuromuscular activity using surface
electromyography (sEMG).
4. Ken Abante
Covid-19 Budget Tracker App. Abante has developed the #COVID19PH Citizen Budget Tracker
that works as a master list for how the government is spending money to combat and alleviate
the effects of the disease. The Tracker, which can be accessed through this link, can track the
expenses used for PPE kits, food, subsidies, as well as expenditures under President Rodrigo
Duterte’s Bayanihan to Heal as One Act.
5. Dr. Arnel A. Salvador
He led a team of scientist from the Research and Extension, National Institute of Physics (NIP),
who made breakthroughs in the field of fiber optic communications. The team produced unique
semiconductor materials like gallium arsenide (GaAs) and aluminium – gallium arsenide
(AlGaAs), by using a process called molecular beam that enables faster and superior data
transmission over conventional copper wires found in usual cables.
6. Dr. Ramond M. Tan
He is recognized for his significant research contributions in Process System Engineering and
Process Integration, particularly the development of novel methodologies for computer-aided
planning sustainable industrial system, as well as the application of these tools to contemporary
national, regional and global sustainability issues, ranging from the planning of carbon
management networks, to the management disaster impacts in input – output system.
7. Philip Alviola
Alviola helped develop methods to monitor biodiversity in protected areas. He’s been studying
mammals, the diversity of cave dwelling bats, and bat viruses, which earned him the moniker
“bat man”.
8. Aletta Conception Yniguez
Yniguez studies contributed significantly to improving the Philippine sardine industry and
managing red tide. Combining bibliophile and experiential learning, she studies how marine
ecosystems works, with particular focus on phytoplankton. These microscopic organisms are
vital to the safety and stability of the aquatic food web.
9. Aimee Lynn Dupo
Her contribution to nation building is her extensive work on the Philippines biodiversity. She has
discovered and identified about a hundred species to date. As a teacher, she educates people
and changes their mindsets about the importance of wildlife.
10. Reinabelle Reyes
An astrophysicist who astounded scientists all over the world when she proved Einstein’s
Theory of General Relativity on Aa cosmic scale. Analyzed data from 70,000 galaxies and found
that they were clustered and grouped together across the universe exactly as Einstein's theory
and predicted.
